Entitled Door Dash Driver Confronts Customer About $8 Tip

Not true. Drivers for the big apps are independent contractors, not employees, and therefore not subject to minimum wage or predefined hourly wages.
Good to know. I purposely avoid using any of the third party delivery services. Just stuff like pizza or Jimmy John's every once in a while where they employ their own drivers.

I used to deliver pizza, and that was the normal tip at the time. Still a decent bump on top of your normal pay for a fast food job.

I don't understand tipping culture, why are food deliveries tipped, but the mailman doesn't get tipped? If anything one delivers the packages and the other delivers food. The mailman puts more effort, and the food delivery guy, you hope hasn't spotted in your food. Then again you hope no one spits or sneezes on your food.

She wants more money because she is incompetent. Fantastic. 40 minutes for what was it? 12 miles? Yeah...no.
I don't think Doordash drivers control traffic conditions.

Do mailmen usually have salary and benefits?

I may be wrong, but this seems uniquely American. Obviously the awful tipping culture, but more so the extremely bitchy, entitled, and childish attitude she had. It was very... Hollywood. Or maybe Hollywood just reflects reality more than I realised.

Go on a Caribbean cruise, the islands you go to are the worst. You looked at me, give me a tip. The cruise lines themselves are horrible too, the tips they add on at the end are crazy. Then the baggage handlers that move your bags literally 20 ft think they should be tipped too. The whole thing put me off ever wanting to go on a cruise again.

I've never understood tipping the mailman either, they're paid quite well and have great benefits.

What's sad if there are RE posters lurking here probing to see if this woman had any mixture in her race so that they could justify it as oppressive.
She looks white though so it's fine. Move along.

WTF 8$ is a good tip. I mean what was his order 200$ or something?

Did she not give him his food because he didn't tip enough at the end?

12 miles and getting an $8 tip seems pretty good to me. Girl was psycho.

Now we don't know how much his order was but the bag she grabbed didn't look that big.

Depending on where you live that could be normal. For instance, 2-3 days out of the week in the Bay Area i would leave at. 6:30 and arrive 15 miles in the Sunset district of San Francisco at 7:45.

I know traffic conditions are vastly different in other places. I am specifically reacting to the damn video where his reaction tells us that she is a moron. Traffic where you are is irrelevant to this situation.

I've never tipped 20% on delivery in my life. Only waiters are allowed to be paid less than minimum wage. Delivery drivers have a normal hourly pay. All they get is $2 from me on any delivery. They're not waiting tables. Usually I'm also like 10 minutes from anywhere I'm ordering from too, so there's that. I only order from places that actually employ their own delivery drivers. I don't know what all the modern rip-off uber eats / doordash employees get.

I've been getting coffee from this drive through place lately on my lunch breaks, and they ask me every time if I want to leave a tip. Fuck no. You're pouring a black coffee in a drive through lol. People are really pushing for some tip bullshit lately. I blame online simp culture.
This tipping thing is not new. Back when Starbucks was new around here I think in 2005, they had a tip jar at the drive thru. They eventually took it away. I never understood the tipping at a drive thru.

I consider myself a generous Door Dash tipper. Never tip based on total, only distance. You might get an extra dollar if I know it's more than 2 bags. $7 is my max. $3 is my minimum (those are literally 5 minutes or less form my house). I know exactly where all the places I order from are.

That seems fair.

I guess it does make sense for third party deliveries to calculate distance. They're basically Uber drivers who happen to bring your food.

Wait, don't drivers choose which deliveries they want? Or is that only Uber?

I thought it works like a ping goes out and nearby drivers decide to pick it up or not and see the tip beforehand.

That said, I feel bad when ordering long deliveries so I tip well. I actually asked on reddit before and everyone told me I tipped WAY too much. I tipped like 13 bucks for a 5 mile delivery, which IMO is pretty fucking far. And people were like dude, I'd do that for 7 bucks, 13 is insane, way too much.

So I cut the difference and now offer 9 bucks every 5 miles.

I don't either. They can control whether or not they act like a cunt, though.
Sure. Just saying its not far fetched that it took someone to drive 12 miles in 40 minutes.

My first real job had me move to a small city of 200 thousand people. I rented a place 8 km away from work (about 5 miles), thinking that was a reasonable distance. My daily commute ended up being 45 minutes.

Judging by the reaction in the video this thread is based on the timeframe is laughable. That's what my comment is based on.

I don't care what traffic is like where you are from.

Most people didn't believe me either when I told them it takes 45 minutes to travel the 5 miles.

Not sure why you're getting so defensive. It's just a conversation.

Because it's completely irrelevant to this thread. I commented on the situation in the video, I don't give a fuck what traffic is like in other places.

This is so weird to me.
In Poland tips do not exist. And for sure not for take out food.
The delivery guy job to bring me pizza which I've already paid for. Here, You pay for the delivery depending on distance. But not as a tip. It's included in on the website. Pizza is 10, delivery is 2. let's go
I don't care if it's 20km. If they agreed to bring me this pizza for 2usd, then come on.
Same with waitress... in fact I could do without and just take the menu and order at the bar. Don't need nobody to come up to me.

I know it sounds rude to the "tip" countries but it is so weird. Pizza is like 10-15usd here. I am not going to give the guy another 5usd

Anyone lazy people on keto need to get hip to door dash (let's be honest, we wouldn't do keto if we weren't lazy). Way easier to get good stuff than with pizza joints. I've been on Dashpass for a while.

back when I was running deliveries in college about 1/3rd of people didn't tip. you learn not to take it personally but I always did find it amusing who was stingier on the tips and who wasn't.

one of our guys was having a really tough time with some bills and delivered for 6 hours in a row with no tips, finally on the last one he asked them to please leave him a tip as he was hurting so the customer flicked a cigarette in his face and told him to get the fuck out.

bad days happen.

I hope this video will haunt her forever when it comes to finding work.
Careful. Sounds like cancel culture.

This chick is a little cunty. It was probably delivery from a nice restaurant so she thought it was payday, then she got stuck in traffic and got a fixed dollar amount instead of the % she was hoping to get.

Tipping culture has gone mad. It’s supposed to be a little extra for a job well done. Then somehow some greedy restauranteur realized they could underpay their employees because “they can make it back in tips”
Now we are asked if we want to NOT tip counter service people. It’s out of hand. And tipping based on a percentage for delivery is fucking stupid. The effort between a 10 dollar order or a 100 dollar order is minimal, why am I expected to tip 10x more?
Deliveries get a fixed 2-6 dollar tip depending on how far the food is coming from (the real effort differentiator in delivery)

We need to go back to employers paying the proper wage (and adjusting prices) and the customers tipping based on motivation from amazing service.

I know some restaurants in NYC tried dumping tipping and having slightly higher menu prices while paying their service staff a higher wage.

They lost business + those better at their job went to a different place so they could earn more.

I seriously doubt any business would have paid a delivery driver about $18 an hour but that's what I was making off of my tips with my old gig.

I do agree that tipping shouldn't be a thing but people love to tip, it makes them feel good. I was always very good at talking with people and a supreme suck-up and people would ask me if what they were tipping was good enough.

I dont ever understand tipping when the delivery isnt free. I remember ordering pizza in college and a $8 pizza would have like a $2.50 delivery fee. And then i would have to tip on top of that. So thats $14 for a pizza when i could just spend two more dollars and get two.

These doordash drivers get paid by doordash who get paid by the customer who is already paying a delivery charge. Tips should be disallowed for doordash and uber orders that already charge $5-10 for delivery.

This reminds when uber first started, the best part was that you didnt have to tip the driver. I never understood tipping cab drivers. I am literally already paying this guy to drive me around, why do i need to pay him more than what the meter says?
I completely understand your train of thought and it is entirely optional. I personally think we should tip (within reason) if the service is fair or better though. Many of the drivers have been kind of locked out of the former lower middle class economy due to globalization, automation, walmart, amazon, etc. Many others once had great careers and can't find work because times have changed rendering them less needed, or for reasons such as being more expensive than a new kid fresh from college without kids yet. In my personal opinion we help them and ourselves by tipping or else no one would be able to take these jobs and be able to make ends meet.

But the lady in this video deserves a pink slip, not a higher tip.

Yep, these days calling in orders for pickup they ask "How much tip do you want to leave?" not "Do you want to leave a tip?" Everyone who handles To-Go's is at least minimum wage, the kitchen staff that preps and bags as well as the runners/cashiers that run the counter. I'm not tipping a full wage employee 20%+ for handing me a bag, GTFO.

What the fuck did I just watch. That woman is unhinged. Demanding that customer come face to face with her for confrontation?! And because the tip wasn’t good enough? Wow!! And then she took the food!! A bold but stupid move.

Feel sad for the moron who hires this prize after she gets fired.

45 minutes to drive five miles in a small town?

Sounds like there's truly horrendous infrastructure there if that's the case.

Door Dash shouldn’t be showing what individual customers are tipping. It should just be an end of the day or week total. Now that I know they can see the tip amount I’ll never use them.

What is the drivers rate for Door dash? What was the order total?

Also I would tell her no, 8$ is fine for the distance.

Glad that beggar tip culture isnt in my country. Its humiliating for the worker and annoying for the customer.

When I ran UberEats and Postmates they didn't show us the tip till the next business day. A lot of times I think people would forget because I would get tips from orders 2 weeks back when they decided to open the app again.

I'm delivering for doordash while I go back to school due to the flexibility Base pay is $3, regardless of distance. Doesn't matter if it's 100 feet or 10 miles. Often, there are no promotions, so if you don't tip, that's all the driver gets. I've learned that cash tips are extremely rare so I don't accept $3 orders anymore. By the time you accept the order on your phone, go to the restaurant and wait for the order to be ready, and then drop off the order at a customer's house, it can easily be 40 minutes+, especially if the restaurant is behind. Taking bad orders that are low pay and/or far will cause you to break even or even lose money. The job has its perks and you can make decent money at certain times (dinner rush, sporting events, holidays, etc) if you know what you're doing but it's hard on your vehicle and you have to factor in fuel, depreciation, and wear and tear, which significantly eats into earnings. Also, there are no benefits or overtime pay. That said, the woman is a lunatic.

Knowing you only get $3 an order is rough. I still don’t know that it would cause me to raise a tip, but I can understand why the lady is frustrated.
She spent time and it cost her because she could really only get one order in an hour time period. But she is still wrong. She is frustrated with her choices and taking it out on the customer.
