Italy didnt have their best player but they were by far the better team bar the first 30 minutes or so. They played at Wembley, with pens they couldn't line up Insigne, Chiesa and Immobile. They still took it. 71% possession in the second half.

And over the course of the tournament, Italy showed the best football.

Donnarumma also nailed Rashford btw. He waited and waited, and made a fake out. He was in Rashfords head.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Thank god. The aftermath of England winning would not have been pleasent to witness.

Rushford was a shut penalty. Give Donnarumma credit because Sancho and Saka were pretty well taken.
Sure, I wasn't commenting on the qualities of the penalties themselves, like you said Rashford's wasn't great but Donnarumma did great with the others so credit to him. I just meant I generally sympathise with them for having missed one. It's a horrible position for anyone to be in.

Italy deserved the win. If England won, it would be a lucky win like a hockey team getting outshot 40-18 but still somehow pulling it off.

Harry Kane did absolutely zero except for the penalty kick goal. Didnt even notice him out there.

Great Tournament all round if I’m honest we had a fantastic run and hopefully we’ll get another shot at a been in the final in the next Euro/WC. Some big teams failed to materialise or their ego got the better of them. France getting knocked out was 😩👌

Enjoyed the match and was surprised by how calm and fair it overall was considering it was a final.

Ref did a fantastic job. Probably the best man on the pitch today

Congratulations to Italy and I hope england continue with Southgate and show a strong showing in the World Cup 2022. Lots of talented players for the present and the future.

There was one part during the telecast midway through it where the ref called a stoppage to play and the cameramen and announcers didn't want to bring attention to it.

Were there streakers who ran onto the field?

I dunno. Even in Rugby, this would have been a red card:

I saw that too. I dont follow soccer, so I wasnt sure if shirt pulling is enough for a red card infraction or not. When I see replays of red cards they are for hand balling or someone doing a dangerous sliding kick.

England down on pens. Another 50 years of woe-is-me from you Brits? (probably more tolerable than the alternative had you guys won. :p)

Good tournament though. I didn't expect England to make a run to the final.

I just fucking love that England lost. Can’t stand the smug behaviour of a lot of english fans. Feeling happy and also happy to pass the european title to our brothers in Italy.

Not going “home” after all England. Suck iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

LOL at the picture above, "Fuck the Queen" Ouch that must burn.

Anyway congrats to Italy, with less talented squad (on paper) they managed to snatch a very big win from the home of the English team. Passion of the Italian team and their players is just something else. That is why they are my favorite team ever, their have a great spirit. And i also love Pizza. So yeah. Congrats.

Some thoughts.

1. Second time a young English squad ran out of steam against pensioner opponents. Last time being Croatia. Definitely something needs to be done about overall fitness. Italy looked sharp and fast most of the game.

2. Why does Southgate act so conservative with subs. See above. Foden should definitely have been bought on for start of extra time with the rest of the subs.

3. At times it's like watching Arsenal play. Why is one of our defenders the only player to reliably shoot from a distance?

I can't argue with end result. Italy looked the more lively and professional team. Still good building blocks for the Sheikh billionaires World Cup next year.

I called this result during the group stages, just pointing this out.

I guess next tournament it'll be Germany, resurgent after Low's retirement.

I guess if you want these disparate English lads to play effectively you need to entirely bleed off all adventurism.. bites you in the ass when you need to press for a goal...

I was rooting for England as a neutral and was surprised by how great they looked early on. I thought England would even get another goal or two. Then Italy started controlling the game. I thought England would take over late in the game due to being a younger team and Italy seemed to be gassed out in their previous 2 games.

So in the battle of generational droughts, Italy (last European championship 1968) beat England (last championship anything 1966).

At least someone broke their streak today. Yes, I do realize Italy has won World Cups since then.

Everyone seems to know the score
They've seen it all before
They just know
They're so sure
That England's gonna throw it away
Gonna blow it away
But… oh, bugger

“and then one night in Rome, we were strong, we had grown…”

the only match were England really outmatched their opponents was against Ukraine in Rome, the only game played abroad Lol.

time to fire southgate before he wastes another generation. contrast to argie coach earlier the day, england coach was too scared to make changes and those late penalty subs lol...

scaloni took off his 2 key midfielders mid way as they have yellow cards

“Footballs coming home” is a 90’s reference to England hosting the game, not winning it. so I think you youll find it it did come home in this instance ;)

While I’m sure all these smug and arrogant England fans do exist, I’m quite confident they don’t exist at the same concentration as some people claim they do. Most fans I know (myself included) are just pleased that they came this far, given the decades generally poor performances in prior major tournament. Perhaps it makes people feel better about themselves, while they shit over a team that actually did quite well, and made their supporters proud this year.

Here in Canada, hockey is totally #1 followed sport, but you got a lot of soccer supporters as theres tons of long time immigrant families and most of them seem to gravitate to EPL. Even for younger people who have never seen a soccer match played in UK or Europe will somehow tag along the EPL train, especially during the David Backham days, which I think a lot of people my age (40s) got into it when he was the face of soccer. And if he wasnt the face of the sport, it sure seemed like he was.

For casual soccer fans who only know EPL, and people who dont follow the sport at all except watching world cup, I dont think many people know that despite English soccer being the biggest face of the sport (I think), their actual tournament performance is lousy.

Has a very similar feeling to my Toronto Maple Leafs. The biggest fanbase with the most money, and comes with that the loudest annoying fans (I admit it). But hasn't won since 1967. They havent even made the finals since that year either. They've made the semi finals maybe 4-5 times in 50+ years. Thats it.

So I think lots of people enjoy seeing them lose or call them smug due to the disparity in popularity vs. winning.
