Here in Canada, hockey is totally #1 followed sport, but you got a lot of soccer supporters as theres tons of long time immigrant families and most of them seem to gravitate to EPL. Even for younger people who have never seen a soccer match played in UK or Europe will somehow tag along the EPL train, especially during the David Backham days, which I think a lot of people my age (40s) got into it when he was the face of soccer. And if he wasnt the face of the sport, it sure seemed like he was.

For casual soccer fans who only know EPL, and people who dont follow the sport at all except watching world cup, I dont think many people know that despite English soccer being the biggest face of the sport (I think), their actual tournament performance is lousy.

Has a very similar feeling to my Toronto Maple Leafs. The biggest fanbase with the most money, and comes with that the loudest annoying fans (I admit it). But hasn't won since 1967. They havent even made the finals since that year either. They've made the semi finals maybe 4-5 times in 50+ years. Thats it.

So I think lots of people enjoy seeing them lose or call them smug due to the disparity in popularity vs. winning.
I think the Beckham-era was when soccer started to hit mainstream in the US/Canada, not sure why, probably because of his celebrity rather than his soccer abilities. There are have been many 'faces' through the years in the EPL, many of them not English or even European. Beckham, in contrast to many other British footballers hasn't even got a knighthood, just an inferior OBE /s

I don't know a great deal about Hockey (I also live in Canada - moved here 15 years ago, but know practically nothing about Hockey), but when we're talking about 50+ years of Stanley Cup, its 50+ tournaments between North American teams only. But in terms of international football/soccer tournaments, the games are every 4-years - or just 14 tournaments played since England's last world cup win in 1966. So if 'popularity vs. winning' is the measure, that's a pretty high standard to meet for the majority of national teams that compete in international tournaments. Most countries that compete in the European championship or World Cup, don't have multiple wins under their belt, and many have no wins; and the popularity of the England team (or any national team) is generally dictated by the population of that country. Team/Club games tend to have more of of a diaspora of fans.. and while I'll throw my weight behind other international teams depending on the tournament, wouldn't describe myself as a supporter of another international team.

Anyway, what I think I'm trying to say is I think success should be defined by the supporters, rather than the detractors. And this is why I can be quite happy with England's performance in this tournament. Sure it would have been fantastic to win the final against Italy, but getting to the final and holding a world-class team off until penalties is the next best thing.

Besides, what the fuck would we sing if England actually won a tournament? It's a song about frequent losing, but still believing.

Did someone drop England's keeper on his head when he was young? This moron screaming at everyone all game every game. Even when he makes dumb mistakes he manages to scream and blame someone else. Had a good showing though today.

There was one part during the telecast midway through it where the ref called a stoppage to play and the cameramen and announcers didn't want to bring attention to it.

Were there streakers who ran onto the field?
I cannot find one thing on the internet about this, at all?

Weird!

I'm sure he was under a lot of stress since for 70% of the time the game happened just in front of him. He played really well.

Hahahaha fuck England with their kneeling and constantly boooing the other teams anthems. Well deserved.
You know it's two separate groups of people.

The players were kneeling
A subsection of the fans were booing.

Trying to simplify it as 'England' is disingenuous at best and down right stupid as worst. Actually reverse that, misportraying the situation is worse.

Also not to mention those booing the anthems were probably the ones booing during the kneel.

I don't understand all the people calling England fans arrogant.

How we can be arrogant when we never achieve anything is beyond me. Don't mistake hype, passionate support and enthusiasm for seeing our team do well as arrogance, it's such a weird take.

Do other nations get routinely mocked for being arrogant when showing any sign of support for their side? No? Well fuck off then.

Breaching security seems like a bad idea these days. What if the dude had a knife or worse? Didn't they say they have snipers?

It’s funny isn’t it? Scottish fans are allowed to wear kilts in the ground en masse and love their country patriotically as are the Welsh and Irish. As soon as England do it though it’s a crime. And don’t talk about violence please, I live in Manchester which was absolutely raped by Rangers fans after the Europa League final.

More than arrogance, I'm really disappointed at the unfairness and non-sportsmanship of the english supporter, especially since they were my golden standard until this championship.

Booing the opponent's national anthem is one (also shitty) thing, but waiting for the supporters of the other team to gang-beat them? Really?

Regarding arrogance I leave this uncommented:

Gang-beat? Lol.

Rather get gang banged (or whatever is you are saying) than stabbed in the arse, which is what Napoli and Rome fans do regularly to opposition fans in the Champion’s League.

This overreaction online (mostly by yanks and what I’m assuming are bitter ‘liberal’ pro-EU loonies) is utterly ridiculous and manufactured.

I don't think we shouldn't mix the two issues.

I have no issue with being patriotic. I think the issue comes from the fact that English football fans have a larger percentage of dicks/scum/idiots (choose adjective) than other sporting fans (like rugby and cricket) then it impacts the perception of the wider fanbase. I also know that the ultra's and some of fans of the big 2 Scottish teams have the same issue but that's a problem for those teams and their respective fans.

So you're saying a very small group of an extremely large group are meanies? Damn.

Na but if you look at other countries and their fans there are mor worse England fans than any other countries. I tried to prove a point to a friend by finding a YouTube video of fight and litter from Italian fans in Rome. I couldn't find any decent footage it was mainly fans celebrating. Obviously if you look hard enough you will find footage like that. But soon I I look up England football fans a ton of litter and fights come up.

Well that settles it then. All english are shit, you're right..

If we go by your logic, all Americans are fat, all Welsh shag sheep, All scots are ginger, French just eat frogs..

Yeah, the list goes on. Can you see yet that having such small minded logic doesnt work?

And never will.

I work with an italian, nice old boy, I was on the phone to him yesterday pissed off he had to work till eight, I went on Facebook and started a hashtag thing to free him an hour earlier and to poke a bit of fun at my old boss..

So, dont be daft. Most English fans are not like that and actually take offence people think that..

Forza Azurri!! Congrats to all the Italians here in GAF. I'm really glad for Chiello, he is on the verge of retirement, one of the best centerbacks of all time and he never won anything with Italy until now. This resurgent Italy is so nice to see play, that midfield with Jorginho, Verratti/Locatelli and Barella is amazing, and beat so many big teams on the way to the cup.

Also, English fans are already insufferable with their arrogance. They are so entitled to winning and talk of 'hurt' when they don't get their God given right to win it, can't imagine how bad they would have gotten if they actually won it.

I don't know for the UK but for an Italian the "it's coming home" attitude is something arrogant but this is simply because we have a different culture. We have something called "Scaramanzia" which would prevent us from singing such a song.
However, apart from the violent and the stupidity of wbooing the national anthem (which unfortunately happens everywhere) I liked the English fans a lot.

But .... It's Coming Rome :)

I've not heard about Scaramanzia before. Could you explain that?

No issues with booing, and being confident and even being arrogant. It's part of fun rivalry however making litter that tax payers have to pay for, violence with fights, as well as hospitalisation from drinking too much is kind of where the line should be drawn. All teams do it but for some reason England fans do more.

Your first paragraph was great and I wholeheartedly agree with it.

The second paragraph was a load of bollocks. How can we be entitled to winning when we hardly ever do!

it is simply a superstition, in Italy if we hope that something good will happen, we do not declare it openly, because we believe it brings bad luck.

For example, everyone thought that Italy was the team that had played better football in this European cup and that we were stronger than England (right or wrong), but before the game no one say it and if someone says it is immediately taken back, following superstitious gestures.

Yes, it's something stupid , but superstition is part of our life and our culture, that's why the English "arrogance" of thinking having already won is strange twice :messenger_grinning_sweat:

You don't need to have won anything to have the attitude that you should, that makes it more puzzling than anything. Even the ridiculous questions the journalists make, like when they asked Kasper Smeichel what it would mean for Denmark to stop football from "coming home". It obviously annoyed quite a few players. The song might be self deprecating, but it was not being singed like that.

Besides, you guys are annoying enough with the PL, with ridiculous shit like Neville's "Now THAT is a Premier League cross" and an overall attitude of looking down on other leagues and expecting wins in Europe just for showing up and being from the PL.

That's insufferable, let's not add actual national team success to it. ;)

I always thought England players were superior and honestly I don't expected to see my Italy win, but after seen them refuse the silver medals, they almost deserved it and I'm glad it's ended like this. I can understand the rage of the moment, but see such behaviour so unnecessary, quite arrogant and childish say a lot about their attitude for this match. It's neither they have played so better over the other team to justify such action.

So much anti English biggotry and generalisations on Twitter today.

The strange thing is that it's acceptable 🤷‍♂️ Any other nation, and you would be accused of Xenophobia.
Of course it's acceptable, we're seen as utterly racist, support our team 'too much' and are just general arseholes..

So just stop being an arsehole, okay?

makes you laugh doesnt it.

We got it in the RWC2003 too, English fans are arrogant, rest of the world are "passionate".
Its laughable really, most English fans are a pretty self-depreciating bunch, especially when it comes to any appearance in a sporting final but that wouldn't suit the narrative of how the rest of mainland Europe (and beyond) sees us.
Like I said... laughable

It's pretty common for players to remove their runners up medal. Stop trying to paint this as anything other than being bitterly disappointed not to win. Hardly as if the players weren't gracious in defeat ffs

When everybody tells you you're drunk, maybe it's time to sit down. England was a complete circus for the past week or so and now you're acting like in that Chappelle Black Bush skit.
