Source: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/artic...-european-sales-during-the-first-half-of-2022
Summary: might come later (looking for Q1 numbers and to see if there is any calculations that I can do)
76.1 million games were sold across Europe during the first six months of the year, a rise of 13.5% over the same period in 2021 (GSD Market Data).

32 million of these games were physical titles, while 44 million were sold via digital stores. The physical data covers all games sold in a box, while the digital data covers games from mainly AAA game developers (with Nintendo the notable absentee).

The biggest European market for game sales was Germany, with nearly 15.4 million games sold over the first six months of the year (sales up 13.6% compared with the same period in 2021). Followed by the UK with 14.3 million sales (up 2%), then France with 10.2 million (up 12.1%).

Elden Ring was comfortably the best-selling title of the first six months of the year. Although it must be noted that Pokémon Legends: Arceus in third-place doesn't include download sales (because Nintendo doesn't share its digital numbers). Therefore, the Switch game may have charted higher, although it has some ground to make up to trouble Elden Ring.

Nevertheless, in terms of physical sales only, Pokémon Legends was the No.1 game. Nintendo Switch games tend to skew more towards the physical retail market, compared with games sold on PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

Elden Ring was the No.1 game in the UK, whereas Pokémon Legends: Arceus was No.1 in Germany and in France
In terms of countries, things varied quite a bit. Elden Ring was the No.1 game in the UK, whereas Pokémon Legends: Arceus was No.1 in Germany and in France. Meanwhile, it was FIFA 22 that dominated the first six months in Spain and Italy.

In terms of the digital/physical split, we must discount all publishers that do not share digital data (so companies like Nintendo). By doing that, we can see that 74% of games sold during the first half of the year across Europe were downloaded.

In the UK, 76% of game sales were digital. In Germany, 67% of games were downloaded, while in France, 63% of sales were downloads. Please note that some of the games counted in this analysis will not have received a physical release.
Across tracked European countries, it's been a tough year for console sales, with just over 2 million machines sold across European countries (this excludes major markets of the UK and Germany). A drop of over 21% year-on-year.

This is primarily due to the lack of stock availability for PS5, with PS5 sales down nearly 44% for the first half of the year. However, Sony's console was still the second most popular across Europe.

The most popular remains Nintendo Switch, which enjoyed a sales rise of 7% over the same period the year before. Nintendo's console has not suffered the same stock shortages as Sony or Microsoft.

Meanwhile, Xbox Series S and X also enjoyed a sales improvement of 9% over the same period last year.
In terms of accessories, over 8.6 million add-on products (including controllers, headsets and toys-to-life products) were sold across Europe, a drop of 4.2% over the same period in 2021.

The best-selling accessory is the Sony PS5 DualSense Controller, with sales up 53% over the same period last year, boosted by the launch of new colour variations. The PS4 DualShock Controller is at No.2.

In terms of points cards, 10.2 million wallet top-up and subscription cards were sold across Europe, which is the same as last year. The most popular product by a large margin remains the PlayStation Store Wallet card.

57% digital without the digital data from Nintendo. If Nintendo represents let’s say a third of the total then the ratio for Sony/MS is 66% digital. Impressive.

And Mario Kart 8 still in the top 20 lmao.

Xbox in 3rd place without any stock issues due to lower demand.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
If Xbox had stock issues it would be mentioned in the article. No need to make things up. It only mention PS5 has stock issues.

Series S is widely available yes?

Reading, how does it work. 🤔

You'd have to be very ignorant to think that Series X doesn't have stock issues. It's also indirectly mentioned in the article.

"Nintendo's console has not suffered the same stock shortages as Sony or Microsoft."

Btw, the hardware numbers don't include UK, by far the biggest Xbox market in Europe.

Yes we all know the 2 biggest markets are US and UK for Xbox . Thats about it for Xbox's market share anyways.

Even if Xbox has shortages issues, lets say when the stock normalizes after 6 months, do you really think it has more demand than PS5 and Switch? Lets be realistic here. Its going to end up dead last like every other generation.

While it's the biggest EU market for Xbox, the UK still is dominated by Sony and Nintendo. The 360/PS3 era was the only time an Xbox console outperformed a Playstation system in that region.

So 1/3 of the generations they participated in?

PS5 still in second place behind Switch due to low stock issues . Xbox in 3rd place without any stock issues due to lower demand.

But there is stock issues on the series x...what are you even saying. If both companies had stock they would have sold more.

The conversation about position is a bit of a weird one, I don't think MS think it's going to be #1 in terms of console units/revenue. That's one metric out of many. I suspect they do want growth and unfortunately Series X is still supply constrained afaik.

That was last gen tbh. This gen, Sony isn't dominating at all. Nintendo is, but it's hard to compare since the Switch is 3.5 years older than Series and PS5.

But the other cheaper option is widely available and is sitting on the shelves collecting dust (series S) . So how much of a difference in sales will it be with the availiblity of the more expensive option? Not so much I guess.

In the EU you can get Series X without issue. But total sales are down 21% because of lack of PS5 stock.

That's a staggering contrast.
This is just not accurate at all. Xbox series x is still very difficult to get in every region. It's a little bit easier than the PS5 but by no means can you just walk into any electronic store and buy one.

Pokemon Legends sold more physical copies than Elden Ring in Europe.

Damn, I know Nintendo games sell well physically, but Elden Ring was on all consoles.

I'm surprised there are so few Sony games, Far Cry 6 is outselling stuff like Miles Morales and The Last of Us 2.

This is simply not true for Europe. It's readily available with next day delivery.

As of this moment of writing, It's sold out at every major electronic store in Netherlands (just checked). It's currently available online at media Markt DE but its sold out at Amazon. DE. Sold out for Amazon NL and Amazon FR as well. Stock varies greatly, though it has certainly improved compared to a few months ago.

That's a staggering contrast.
How to get a PS5 in France right now:
- Call Micromania (the equivalent of GAME in the UK);
- Ask to be put on the waiting list;
- Wait until the next Tuesday when they get stock;
- Go and buy your HFW bundle.

The situation those days isn’t nearly as bad as people believe based on 2020/2021. Although it might become bad again around October/November when demand increases.

There’s really nobody disputing that the Xbox will sell the least of the three consoles in Europe. You’re coming off as a complete clown, crowing about grass being green 😂

It’s like popping up in Japan sales thread to remind everyone that PlayStation is being completely dominated by Nintendo. That’s…not a situation that’s under dispute.

You mean 9 percent growth compared to last year ? That isn't telling us much . PS5 still outsold Xbox even when PS5 sales were down nearly 44% for the first half of the year.

Thats terrible for MS when your competition outsells you with abysmal stock availibility.

Actually, the sales trajectory and all projections for the xbox series Looks to be significantly better than Xbox One. All this in the backdrop of MS providing multiple places to play their games (PC, XCloud). I think Microsoft leadership will be very pleased.

Nobody at MS had the realistic target of outselling Sony in Europe.

That's why I quit replying to the clown. He made a couple big claims in thread and took big Ls on both of them. Instead of being humble, just resorted back to PS still outsold Xbox.

It points to a conversation not worth having with a zealot.

Are you talking about specific model? The xbox Series S is readily available at all those stores. Series X is available at MediaMarket too.

There’s a significant portion of the market that will not take the Series S over the X, so of course it makes sense to discuss stock issues with the Series X in mind.

Spot availability isn’t also relevant when talking about performance over a long period of time. In Europe, the Series X is supply constrained.

I responded to a quote that was specifically talking about the Series X model. The Series S has been widely available mostly everywhere. It's true that the Series X is currently available at mediamarket but I believe only in Germany.

Actually my argument is that Xbox problem with the lack of sales is the lack of demand, not the lack of supply. Your colleagues seems to think that Xbox is supply constraint when the cheaper model is widely available everywhere. There might be a slight supply problem with the model X, but I doubt it would make a significant difference in sales. The problem with Xbox outside of UK and US is the lack of desirability and demand for the product, not the supply. And even in those countries where Xbox has "strong" sales, they still ended up dead last. Sorry if the facts hurt your feelings.

Oh and it doesn't take much effort to incur some growth after the failed Xbox one product. I mean, it was a disaster anyways. A better comparison should be the growth from Xbox 360 . How does the Xbox series compare to Xbox 360 is a much more fruitful comparison IMO.
Its like saying the Switch is a runaway success compared to the WII U.
