EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

I've played all Smash Bros, still doesn't change the fact that it is 16 years old and other games have been booted once a sequel came out. It's over stayed it's welcome. NOBODY would say that it is superior to a game like 3rd strike and 3rd strike isn't there.

so you speak for everyone? what a ridiculous thing to say

I don't really see the Skullgirls community donating all that much to get into EVO again when Combo Breaker is that community's big tournament now. But idk.

Not really sure who will take it since the last few days could be very different.

Why is Melee in the main line up when they already have Smash 4?

Melee is the only legacy game, every other game came out in the last year. Seems like bullshit to me.

Just stick in one of these Player Choice games if they are going to have a legacy game. At least those aren't from 2001.

Or hell, Garou Mark of the Wolves and The Last Blade 2 both got PS4 ports last year. I'd love to see Garou.

Melee is the 3rd biggest game at EVO in entrants & has very little overlap with Smash 4.

Because Melee gets more entries and views than any other non-SFV non-Smash 4 game and there's not as big an overlap between Smash 4 and Melee players as you'd expect.

People watch Melee. People won't watch Garou or The Last Blade 2. Also entries between Smash 4 and Melee aren't actually a huge crossover.

there's more people playing melee at my local pub right now than there are people playing third strike worldwide

Fingers crossed for Marvel.

We clearly need a last main tournament ? Can ChrisG win again ? KBR ? Rayray ?

Regarding ARMS, don't get me wrong. I think it's a cool game, but it's too early to tell is the game is good enough for EVO.

Look, my love of MAH-VEL shall not waver, but last year was truly a sendoff year with ChrisG winning. Marvel proved itself to the haters and was a staple that now needs a break until MvC Infinite hits to revitalize the hype. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and weak.

Make way for new-blood is what I say.

As interesting as ARMS looks, we have no guarantee that it'll be a proper competitive fighting game that can last (Pokkén basically died off after EVO). And even then, ARMS has all of this year to prove itself as a viable competitive fighting game. This is UMvC3's last chance to be at EVO before MvCI comes out, might as well make the most of it.

2018 EVO lineup:

Smash Melee
Smash 4
Smash 4 NX
Pokken Tournament
ARMS
Ultra Street Fighter II
Fire Emblem Fighters
Fire Emblem VS Capcom

I don't think Arms will win (though hoping it does). But if it does and it disappoints, it'll still be interesting to see people try to play competitively.

Do you know what business does?

All these votes for Arms are fucking baffling. Why try to get something that barely looks like a fighting game, let alone a competitive one, into EVO especially for a Sunday slot? Nobody has any idea of this will have a scene, if it's going to be even remotely balanced, or even whether or not it will be interesting to play or watch. These votes basically amount to 'doing it for the lulz.'

I don't mind whether it looks like a fighting game or not, but I feel like it's silly to vote for a game that hasn't released yet with no established competitive scene.

Given that it's the Mario Kart 8 team that's making ARMS, nobody's doubting that it'll be good (hell, you don't even need motion controls). The question is if it'll have a thriving competitive scene, especially after Pokkén foundered. Had UMvC3 not been an option, I would have taken a chance on ARMS. But since UMvC3's send-off year is on the line, let me ask you guys this question. What would Stan Lee do?

Arms isn't out, the system isn't out and for all we know it's going to be shitty. Who in their right minds would spend money to vote for it?

Nintendo fans are weird.

It doesn't barely look like a fighting game, it completely looks like one. Just a new and interesting take on one. That is what has people excited. Instead of (Smash excluded) every game being variants on the SF/MK formula or the Tekken/Virtua Fighter formula there's something genuinely new that seems to still have the same competitive depth as those tried and true fighter formulas. FGC people who have already gotten their hands on it like it a lot and are interested in it. It makes sense to be an option here.

In terms of having a scene or not...getting into EVO will certainly help that. It's not like any of the other fighting games "Had a scene" before release either. It's ok for their to be a new contender that isn't some iteration on a long standing franchise. That's exciting. Obviously Mr. Wizard also thinks it's exciting since he decided to include it as an option.

Yet Tekken 7 has been at Evo twice in a row w/o being released in NA.

The community didn't vote for it to be at EVO.

Like if arms is voted in and then the game dies because, worst-case scenario, nobody wants to play it, isn't that kind of a problem? I would rather throw my money behind a game that has proven itself.

That's ok apparently because there's already been 8 prior Tekken games so by being the new entry it's just inherently acceptable without having a scene...I guess.

Some people in the FGC are so adverse to new blood and new ideas in the genre. I don't get it at all.

As mentioned earlier, they struck gold with Splatoon & put the Mario Kart 8 team (who made the best entry in the Mario Kart franchise) in charge of ARMS. Most people realize that the game won't be shit, it's a question of if the game will catch on competitively (Splatoon caught on in Japan competitively, but its worldwide appeal was held back by the Wii U).

Tekken 7 is the 7th game in an established franchise, it's a known quantity.

If EVO only had "known quantities" it'd be boring as hell. I mean that's already what it mostly is, but it's very refreshing to have a fresh game or two on the lineup. EVO is a great way to promote new games that don't have that franchise legacy. Street Fighter, Tekken, KOF, Marvel, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Mortal Kombat (with Injustice filling in for it sometimes), and now Smash...they're all great games but they're also known quantities. They basically fill out the entire EVO lineup annually. The number is unimportant, the newest version almost always gets promoted. These are fun games to watch but I'd hate it if EVO was -just- these same games every year.

Throwing in something new, whenever it happens, is great.

Pokken had no competitive scene before the EVO announcement last year and it was both one of the most watched games and had a shit load of entrants.

KI's scene was inordinately tiny, still got to be at EVO.

TvC was refreshing to have at EVO for one year, it's too bad MvC 3 caused it to never show up again.

It's somewhat criminal that Skullgirls has never been able to be a main EVO game.

ARMS totally makes sense as a potential EVO game.

No it won't. Look at Pokken.

It absolutely did. Pokken had a ton of entrants and stream viewers and did the entire competitive circuit up to EVO because it was in the lineup. That game arguably had a scene -because- of EVO. That's great. It dropping off after is due to a multitude of factors though. Namely, it didn't get ongoing support (even though the Arcade version has, including new characters), Nintendo stopped caring about it after EVO, and the system it's on is both effectively dead and requires an odd setup to even run the game competitively.

Okay, well I still think it's weird that Melee is the only old game and everything else is extremely recent.

I also think it's funny that Smash wasn't even at Evo until a couple years ago and it's one of the biggest draws now.

Correction, The Pokémon Company stopped caring. They were the ones who handled the Pokkén League, whereas Nintendo just helped with providing set-ups to majors.

Pokken was the least watched game at EVO 2016.

My mistake. I'm not sure why I was thinking otherwise. IIRC it still got a very healthy amount of entrants though and overall did well at the event.

Infiltration has betrayed us, he's backing ARMS.

This is really what I'm talking about. A lot of people in the FGC are actually excited about it and like what they've played/seen. That should be enough to convince people that it's worth taking seriously and isn't just some joke.
