Evolve Big Alpha Impressions/bugs/glitches thread

Since I've downloaded last night I've been fairly lucky. Always get a full game with smooth connection.

I know there were server issues but even before the patch it's been working like a charm. Trying it out on my laptop now pleased that my i5 can run it fairly well on medium settings hope that stays for the full game.

It's not a good comparison for anyone who actually plays a ton of L4D though. Survivors vs Tank is not a mode in L4D, it's not a major part of the game, and it's not even what players like best about it in Versus. It doesn't share any of the actual game flow, objectives, scoring, that L4D has. People who make the comparison keep bringing up Survivors vs Tank, but that's not what L4D mainly is, nor is it a specific game mode, nor is it what the game is really good for!

Right, but generically Evolve is what I described and why people are calling it that. They're not saying they are 1:1 identical. They're just saying while they're playing, they feel very similar from a certain stand point.

I agree with what you're saying overall. You sound like you've played a lot of L4D and appreciate the differences (which there definitely are). But let's talk about similar situations to compare.

LucasArts, Westwood, Sierra, and TellTale games all made/make adventure games. From someone who's not a huge fan of adventure games, they may feel that King's Quest is no different from Maniac Mansion outside of humor. While I really disagree with this statement, I can still appreciate where they're coming from. At the core of the games, they're the same. You gather clues, you point and click, you piece together illogical puzzles. But those games are very different to a fan of those games.

Level 12 already, and I'm not even close to unlocking the Kraken or the second version of each hunter. The progression should be faster than this. Even more in a time limited alpha.

The problem is the experience of playing L4D and Evolve is so different than the comparison has no value. You can't assume a person who likes one will like the other. Just as you can't assume someone who liked Maniac Mansion will like King's Quest. It would be better to present Evolve as a multiplayer shooter without the L4D comparison.

Played the PC version for a few hours and all I can say it's incredibly boring. Maybe playing with some people with mics it might be better, but right now I'm not enjoying it at all.

I don't think so...the game is actually really boring.

So what's going on with the PS4 alpha? Did they delay it or something? I'm still not able to join any servers.

edit: nevermind, just saw the post on their official site. god damn it.

How long are people having to wait to get into a match on the Xbone? I've spent like half an hour over the last two days on the matchmaking screen and have yet to actually play.

Some musings about how to hunt the beast.

Don't follow Daisy around. Yeah, she always go after him, but she is slow. Hunters are a bit slower than the monster, and Daisy is even slower than the hunters (at least, hunters that use efficiently the jetpack), so if the group moves at her pace, you will never catch up. Daisy is more when you truly lost the monster, to have an idea of the direction where it is. Once you know that direction, run at maximum speed, leaving her again behind you.

The monster spawn in almost the same spot you (the hunters) spawn, just a few seconds before. So the first thing you have to do after landing is look around for footsteps or birds, then go FAST after him. No moment of doubt, just run, every second counts. And ignore the wildlife, I don't know why so many people like to lose time killing it in the first minutes. They get bored and like to shoot at things, I suppose.

With a bit of luck, your relentless pursuit will mean the monster won't have much time to feed and gain armor and evolve, mark it with Q every time you see him. 5.1 sound helps a lot of locate him, too. Follow him hard, and every time he stops to feed and recover some armor you should be somewhat near, pressing him again and making him leave the foot uneaten.
Fire at him, and usually the monster's player will panic and run away in a straightforward manner. Other players should use this to use a shortcut and trap him.

In fact, remember to use the map (tab) a lot, and try to predict where the monster is moving. Usually if you have a sighting here, then a bird warning there, and then a tree falling in the same direction, you can imagine clearly the path the monster is using, usually bordering the map in clockwise or counter-clock wise pattern. With that in mind it's easy to cut short and go to his next location.

If you have mics and some decent coordination try to divide in two groups, one following from behind and the other trying to trap him from a forward position.

When the monster evolves, don't be discouraged because of it, as in that moment he loses all his armor, it's the moment to press forward and try to catch him in a dome.

Obviously if he reaches level 3, it's time to camp the reactor in a coordinated effort. Even in level 3, a combination of mines and harpoons and bombardment (easy to him when he is trapped by a pair of harpoons) can destroy his armor fast. In fact when he is level 3 he is slower than before, try to juke his attacks. Double-jump to do a dash.

Sometimes if he is level 3 and he's killing one player after another, what the surviving player has to do it isn't to try to kill him or revive a downed mate almost dead (risking both deaths) but to run away, giving time for the other players to respawn again. But be careful with the reactor goal, as the monster can try that moment to destroy it.
A tactic is to fire at the monster from the distance if you are alone and he is starting to hit the reactor, it seems damage interrupts his destroying-reactor animation so he will have to go after you. Run away, use invisibility, etc, he may return back to the reactor, so repeat again the same tactic. With some luck your mates will be respawning around that time.

Got extra PC codes if anybody needs them.

I'd like one if you still have any :)
Edit: Thanks man you da best

Well sure, I'm not saying that the games should never be ever mentioned in the same sentence or anything. But I'm just pointing out that when making certain comparisons, especially with people who are fans of L4D, it's not particularly helpful to say "it's just a glorified L4D VS mode" or "It's exactly the same thing" suggesting that anyone who likes L4D Versus might like it, or that anyone who hates L4D Versus would dislike it. There are enough differences that it doesn't make a lot of sense to put it that way.

If we're talking about a totally casual comparison, sure, Evolve is a team based versus shooter which isn't deathmatch or capture the flag. That's what I was interested in it to begin with. But beyond that, it doesn't mean much. :)

Here are a few extra PC codes that I have, hope someone can make good use of them:

So, I've now played a few hours of it and I'm personally really enjoying it. I personally don't get the boring comments. I especially like the parts trying to hide as the monster from the people, eating, trying to remain aware of your surroundings. It's awesome.

Anyone having problems just launching out of Steam? I hit the play button, and it turns my profile pic green to indicate green before quickly changing back to blue. Then nothing launches.

Anyone else encounter this problem? Going to search back in the thread as well, just figured I'd ask here.

Holy shit, I just had the most boring round I have ever played in any game ever. We couldn't see any tracks of the monster apart from like 2 times (and they vanished as soon as we found them). He didn't scare any wildlife and it seemed like he was always on the other side of the map or something. Didn't see the monster a single time in 15 minutes and then he was lvl 3 somehow.

He then rushed us and killed our medic (that didn't even try to heal anyone) and it was over in a minute.

We ran around and did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for 15 minutes, because there was nothing we could do to even try and catch up to him and then we died.

10/10, would play again.

I've never had that problem, but my suggestion would be to try verifying the game's cache from Properties >> Local Files. It should eliminate any possibilities of incomplete game files, and guarantee that the problem is on your side and not Steam's. At the very least, it will rule out a couple of things.

Beyond that, it's an alpha so maybe there are some hardware incompatibilities. Maybe try official support on the feedback forum for Evolve.

For a situation where someone is trying to convey the basic idea behind Evolve to someone who hasn't played it, can you think of a better reference point than L4D's verses mode?

Might be a weird question, but I've tried everthing: what's the chat/talk button? I suspect it's something that's not on my German keyboard. It's also not in the key binding options.

Look I fully admit that I might have went overboard when I called it a glorified Vs mode, but to say that it has no value is also just as silly. When you are trying to explain the core gameplay of one game to someone you naturally compare it to other games, no?

In this case I think the core gameplay is most comparable to L4D Vs. mode. Yes, there are vast differences as I have said a few times, but the core gameplay is similar enough that I would draw that comparison when telling someone about Evolve.

For a situation where someone is trying to convey the basic idea behind Evolve to someone who hasn't played it, can you think of a better reference point than L4D's verses mode?

Nod.

G in English.
Well that's voice chat, I mean the written chat.

The game is super weird so far. Matches last less than 5 minutes and they are always one sided depending on how skilled the monster player is.

edit: Yep, it's enter, never tried that I guess. Thanks.

Hit the enter key then.

I just had a pretty clutch match. Monster hit level 3 and we started camping the damn, I was the first to die (assault), then medic, trapper. It was the support all by himself the medic and I respawned. He killed the medic and I just barely took him down.

Press enter to make a text chat message.

I don't think there's any button to see a chat log.

Sounds like your Trapper didn't know what they were doing. If you have absolutely no idea where the monster is, the trapper should follow Daisy and the team should spread out.

First impressions: This is gonna get old really fast. Its a shame, its an interesting concept and they've clearly put a ton of work into it but I just don't see it being something people play long term.
