F.E.A.R. 3 (F3AR) |OT| Sibling Rivalry

The gun play in the first one was soo much better than the 2nd one. It just felt right. Not so much in 2. I also thought the first one looked better than 2 on pc.

The gunplay may be slightly better, but Fear 2 looks 1000 times better than Fear1. I played them both in succession starting with Fear2 in the last two days.

What is it about FEAR 2 that you felt was too consolized?
-levels more linear
-AI being dumber. Slower reaction time as well even on hardest difficulty.
-quicktime scare events where you must spam a button to not be horror killed
-Dynamic shadowing for objects in environment removed
-scares coming from a mile away. No good scares like in fear 1 with the ladder double whammy.
-lean removed(this doesnt matter too much since the AI is dumber)
-balance in weapons is all over the place. 4 main weapons you can carry now?

+models/animations were better
+MECH SHOOTING BRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBBRBRBRBR

Blech, what's with the red magic dude. FEAR was awesome because you were a one man killing machine, you didn't have a wizard escorting you.

Oh well. I'll wait till it's cheap unless it defies all expectations.

Can't say I agree for the most part.

The AI isn't as good, I agree, but I didn't think it was great in FEAR either (never understood the praise it received for that). There are quite a few CONSOLE games with significantly better AI than either FEAR title so this isn't a console issue.

Loss of dynamic shadows was a disappointment, the overall visuals are MUCH better than FEAR 1.

The original was one of the boxiest games I've played. Much less organic than any of its peers at the time. It sacrificed everything in the name of lighting, basically. While playing, this is the kind of thing you see constantly.

While FEAR 2 was more like...

Most environments in FEAR 1 were incredibly simplistic boxes slathered normal maps.

I didn't think either game managed particularly good scaes.

Aside from quicktime events, I didn't think there was anything about it that felt particularly consolized over the original.

They did a shoddy porting job of FEAR to the 360 and PS3. That and they made Fracture, which has to be one of the most stupid games ever released.

WELP!

Anxious to hear impressions on whether this game is SCARY or not. Almost everything I've seen has been focused on the action. Monolith was so good at getting thick atmosphere in their games.

Preorder a little while ago, fairly excited. I've heard the co-op mode is at least mildly entertaining, so I'll be enjoying that.

One thing Fear has always had is a metric fuckton of shooting engagements. Its a good time even if its not best of class. I'm game with the proper price drop, which sounds likely ;P

And I just love that they called a game mode "Fucking Run". Nice :)

I had a great time with F.E.A.R. 2. I enjoyed it more than the first. That being said, I don't have high hopes for 3. If it gets decent reviews, i'll check it out.

Loved FEAR 1 and 2 so I'm excited for this as well. Don't currently have the bucks for it but I'll be watching reviews and I'll get it in a couple weeks if it looks good.

Do you get to play as the dude with super powers?

In co op, one takes Point Man and the other takes Paxton. In single player, you have to play the level first as Point Man and then it's unlocked to play as Paxton.

Where did you read that it was 4 hours long?

Some walkththrough clocked in at around 4 hours. Incomplete build, though, and I could've sworn people said it was impossible to get past the first couple levels.

The incomplete build you're referring to is on the PC and crashes after the first prison interval. So far, the walkthrough appears to be complete which includes the opening cinematic, prison interval and beyond as well as the ending/s to the game. I presume it was a copy of the X360 version that may have been sold early.

OK, well 4 hour campaign... might have to reevaluate that above post. Cannot justify a 60 dollar game for that.

I'm pretty sure it was based on the beta that had some unplayable levels.

FEAR2 was boring as shit. Inferior gunplay, inferior movement, NO LEAN WHAT THE SHIT. The jump kick sucks. Man I just hated FEAR2. The ending is all kinds of laughs, but man the game just sucks. The first one has a slew of problems as well, but I liked it more.

AI on Hard was fucking cheap as hell.

I'm with Stallion. I want a demo.

lol @ 50 gif.

Game looks pretty forgettable. See you in the bargain bin, F3AR. I'm sure you'll be a perfectly cromulent $15 purchase, just like F2AR.

Yeesh, I forgot how ugly Fear looked. Fear2 kicked its ass in the level department.

Kind of amazing really, that was pretty much the last high profile game I played on PC. I think it was at medium on my 9800pro. The effects were great.

Does anyone know what exactly are the PC features for this? I hear it has Steamworks, but so far it's only confirmed Steamworks for DRM like FEAR 2. Does it access your Steam friends list? Steam Achievements?

Well to be fair that is just about the ugliest screen of FEAR I've ever seen. It looks a good bit better in other areas of the skyscraper, underground complex and the apartments at the end.

I played FEAR 1 and 2 both on the PC and I much preferred FEAR 2. There were some aspects of the original I preferred, but overall, I thought FEAR 1 was a pretty boring, ugly game.

Everything about FEAR 2 was consolized. The entire experience was basically designed to appeal to that sort of audience. (edit: I should say the overall effect felt like consolization, saying everything was consolized is unfair.)

FEAR's gameplay is fantastic imo, and maybe the best in just about any FPS. I enjoyed the technically horrible expansions to FEAR more than FEAR 2 because the gameplay felt that much stronger on a fundamental level. The fights felt violent and brutal with the excellent sound and visual effects.

FEAR was more repetitive than FEAR 2 I guess, but it was way more fun to play.

And leaning was actually a fairly big part of FEAR for me. I used it all the time.

It appears as though it will use Steam achievements but that's only based on some highly speculative talk on FEAR fan forums. My feeling is that if it had any kind of Steam integration such as matchmaking or Steam Cloud then it would say so on the Steam Store (which it doesn't). It's going to be fucking atrocious if they use Gamespy again.

Original FEAR gunplay felt better and strangly seemed to have better AI. But the second one is definitally visually superior both in content and design.

Anyway I'm happy at least to have some idea of why he and his brother team up. Didn't make much sense to me seeing them together given the history. But the synopsis makes me feel a little better regarding the story.

Not a day 1 purchase, but I'm invested in 2 games I'll probably want to see the story through.

Yeah, ugly is a strong word. I thought the game looked nice on my PC but the office environments got to me after a while.

Umm IGN just gave it a good review. 8.0

F.E.A.R. 3 is huge. A 7-8 hour solo campaign can be beaten with two characters. Then, there’s co-op and multiplayer. And earning high scores. There’s a lot to do here.

CCC review 3.9/5
F.E.A.R. 3 is a welcome treat, if only for its nerve-grinding atmosphere. The campaign is far too short—with Fettel, you could probably whiz through it in three or four hours—but the multiplayer modes are a lot of fun. The few other flaws the game has are largely forgivable, especially if you thirst for a great horror first-person shooter that you can play with a friend.

I like how ign says 7-8 hours yet ccc says 3-4. Too bad a playthrough already sides with the latter.

Maybe IGN played through it twice?

Anyways, seems like it will be a solid game COOP wise.
