Finally snagged a copy today! :D

Took me awhile to find one, though. Well, the directors edition. I saw regular edition at places but I didn't want that. Need my extras! :D

How do you like...

Yeah I was about to cry when I saw another PC game with a paper sleeve. At least it is on one DVD and not 600000000000 CDs anymore. Next step is to actually give us cases again.

Watched the prequel movie. Little more backstory on the little girl Alma. Going to wait till later tonight to dig into the game. Don't know if this is a good move or not! :lol

Well, that aint Monolith's fault, the publisher makes the packaging and that falls on Vivendi.

But anyways, I'm so enjoying FEAR. Its funny, I usually am one to complain when there isn't much diversity in environments (as I did with Castlevania PS2). But with this game, I'm so immersed into the atmosphere of both the intense gun battles (yeah for gun porn!) and the creepy factor that I don't really pay too much attention to the surroundings.

I'm only at the very start of the third major area now (
Armacham Headquarters
) and I'd have to say that the first area was my favorite even though it was short, though I hear the level I'm on gets much better once I get down from the roof. I did think the second area (
The Sewage Treatment Plant
) was pretty repetetive, but as I said, I wasn't paying too much attention.

Time for more! :D

Oh yeah, I found a pretty cool "easter egg", or at least I think its one.
In an air vent, there was an envelope that would be easy to pass over, but on close inspection, it had Monolith's address on it. pretty neat.

I'm running it fine with an ATI 9800XT, so I can't imagine that the better cards would have problems with it.

Of course, I don't have any AA turned on, so that probably makes a difference

Yea if you're looking for big performance boost try these:

Anti Aliasing: Shut it off, in 99% of games it only results in a 3 - 5% loss in framerate (depending on your card), but in FEAR's case it is closer to 40%.

Soft Shadows: This gave me a 30fps jump shutting it off, and considering how bad the softshadows are done in this game, its worth shutting off.

Volumetric Lighting: Turing this from high to medium gave a big boost in performance.

Other then those 3 options, I have everything at max and I get around 75fps at all times except for massive firefights.

I havent picked up the full game yet so I could be wrong but I think FEAR uses FSAA as opposed to MSAA, which would explain the big performance hit here. Might want to try turning off the in-game AA but use MSAA through your control panel instead and see how it handles.

Not a bad idea, I'll give that a shot when I get home.

yet another fps and it has slow mo, just like Max Payne

weeeeeeeeeeeeeee

you kids are so easy to entertain.

The AI is easily the best I've seen this year. And the gun play is just freakin' awesome. So, this game easily entertains me.

I'd be enjoying this game immensely if it wouldn't produce some fucked up graphical screw ups with my card.

A64 3000+
1GB of RAM
GeForce 6600 GT 128mb

I'm not even trying to push this game, but after I play it for a bit, I start to get green effects everywhere. blinking all over. In the bullet holes/holes in the wall, on my gun, and the screen completely fills up with it when I try to use Slo Mo for kicks. It makes the game pretty unplayables because it fills the entire screen. I'm certainly not overclocking my card either. =/ Running the latest drivers, blah blah blah. This is annoying the shit out of me ><

Anyone else hear about this?

Didn't work, using the driver's AA caused the same massive drop in framerate that the games internal AA does.

After playing through the DEMO.
OMG WTF AHH!!

I was loving the scary stuff but my computer isn't built for this game =/

Yeah, due to the fact that the levels are all constructed from EXTREMELY simplistic geometry, you can make this game almost look like something from the N64 days...

Try turning everything off and enabling pixel doubling...

Finally got the game and... WOW. It does run much better than the demo! There are some occasional hiccups, specially when changing zones (going from a corridor to the outside) but the game does runs way smoother. Monolith still needs to improve their coding skills, it is almost insulting to set the FSAA to 0 and deactivate the soft shadows to achieve good framerates with a nearly top of the line computer.

I am still at the water processing facility. The level is pretty dumb and out of the "School of Generic Level Design" but the combat is lots of fun and the best is still to come, so I won't bitch so much about it right now. And the gun porn sure is lovely.

Now, I have a question for you. How do I use the remote bombs? I press the "6" key but I can only use the detonator, I can see how I can throw the explosives. Yeah, I've read the manual but it tells nothing about this.

When you switch to the remote detonator, use the grenade key to throw the explosive, then the primary fire button to detonate.

sounds like over heating

when it does this TAB ALT back to windows and check your cards temp Right click ->Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> select the geforce tab -> Tempreture Settings

I had to save in Bad Water before heading out. I'm loving this game. The atmosphere is amazing. This is the only game I've ever played where the enviroment noises make me stop. When lights start flickering, swinging, books and cans falling off shelves, it makes me stop for a second before moving on! I now starting to see what everyone means about Gun Porn when they talk about this game. The level design leads to some awesome firefights in this game. You usually get two paths to reach every area which helps out with the firefights when enemies try to flank you from behind. Makes each battle extremely exciting. The pacing is well done. After some big battles it gives you some time to recover and get ready for the next showdown. Well maybe not recover a whole lot because inbetween the battles is when the freaky stuff happens! :lol

My only concern a the moment is perhaps abusing the slo mo too much. I'm only on the 3rd area and I've found 4 or 5 slo motion extenders already. It does make the battles too easy. But I'm not using the slow motion as much anymore. Only in situations where I'm extremely outnumbered from front to back. It is fun though to slow downtime and take out 5 guys at once. Can't wait to dig into the game some more this weekend. :D

Spent time playing both this and Quake 4 last night, and admittedly I thought both kick serious ass.

I actually spent more time demo-ing Q4 because with full EAXHD support and Ultra-High detail, the game is sensory overload and I didn't want to stop oggling it. The shooting is pure dumb fun, some of the best on PC since Painkiller actually. It's everything Doom 3 wasn't and should have been, those giant mechanical spiders busting through walls were just...eek. I seriously considered rushing out to buy a copy of my own after my extended session, but I plan to try and hold off for the 360 port, which I really want now. Stupid beautiful fun. Reached a neat twist in the campaign before forcing myself to stop.

FEAR I bought earlier last night, and it's pretty cool the couple hours I put into it, though the default difficulty isn't doing a very fantastic job of showing off this advanced AI. Granted it's neat to hear them call out for reinforcements or take notice of my position and attempt to flank, but I reached the sewage plant and haven't seen anything all THAT impressive yet. I just mow them all down as if I was back in Quake 4, which is pretty fun regardless. 'Gun porn' is a perfect descriptor, love that shotgun.

Same here. Sometimes I kick a soda can by accident and I find myself taking cover and pointing to all possible entrances, the game rules like that :D

Man, I can't really wait for Condemned, looks like the good Monolith is back.

Fukny leave F.E.A.R. for a moment and check that Sanitarium thread of yours, I made a reply there especially for you ;p

HOLY FUCKING CRAP!!!! I've torn a guy in two with the shotgun!

I was engaging in close combat with the shotgun when this "hero" jumps right in front of my boomstick, as soon as I pull the trigger the guy breaks in two pieces in the middle of a giant cloud of blood, the legs fall on the floor while the torso, arms weaving, flies through the hallway shooting randomly until it hits the floor.

This must be the goriest death I've seen in a FPS since SiN.

AWESOME.

Yea you can saw them in half, or if you hit them just right completely vaporize them in this huge explosion of gore at point blank range. I like how when I chuck a grenade into a group of enemies all that remains is lots of blood and all these random body parts.

I think that the AI ramps up over the course of the game or something. I am playing at the second most difficult level, and I thought that the AI was nothing special at first. Now that I am further into the game, they are excellent at flanking and laying down supressing fire. An enemy once even yelled out "he's trying to flank us", which is exactly what I was trying to do.

You guys seen the AI make cover for themselves yet, seems dynamic and not scripted. Like one guy will drag a couch out and tilt it for cover. Or another guy dumped these shelves over, and then when I turned around, crawled UNDER the shelves to ambush me from behind.

The AI is truly awesome if you really watch it. If you rambo through headshotting them before they have time to really let loose it definitely wouldn't seem impressive.

As an Englishman I consider this game to be a shining example of gimmicks taking precedent over a properly structured game. The singleplayer demo contained pretty much everything the game has to offer (save for two decent enemy types and two AWFUL ones)

Corridor after corridor, pipe after pipe and ladder after ladder, it just seems such a bloody waste of some excellent ideas.
You sir will not last long within these borders :D I have great expectations for this game, the demo i played had me hyped for more, i wonder how that little girl will play a role in this game, none the less the ride should be great.

That happens sometimes.
But the funniest thing I saw today in the game was when I shot a guy in the foot, and he stopped shooting, and tried limping away on his good foot. He only made it a couple of feet before I put him out of his misery. :)

AWESOME.

Iv had that happen to me as well and it was one of the coolest things i think iv ever seen xD great game. Game looks great even on my shitty 1.8ghz, 9500pro, 1gig. Last 5-10min was awesome although i wished there was more locals. was kinda pissed at how they dealt with fettal at the end also. Oh well a solid 8.5 game. Bring on F.E.A.R 2!

Sadly, my Geforce tab does not have a temp setting option. =x I wish I knew how to remedy this. This is the first and only game to cause this problem. =/

The repetitive environments bring the game down, however the intense gun battles more than make up for it. Really liking the game so far.

BTW my specs

2 ghz
1 gig ram
ATI 9600 SE 128

Playing at 800x600
2x anti aliasing
no shadows
world detail high
everything else on medium

so far the game run pretty smoothly, does slow down during gun fights but it still is very playable.

Problem found! The fucking FAN in my GeForce 6600 GT was like, hanging OUT of the card when I went to clean out the system. That explains the whole "overheating" thing. Good thing I bought it from a good company in town run by guys I helped pass high school =D

Right now I am finishing
Sayonara sucker
While the AI and the fighting are the best ever in the genre, the environments are unexpectedly dull (specially coming from Monolith) and the level design is simply atrocious, one of the worst I've seen lately. Not only it does feature all the unimaginative and overdone conventions of most FPSs (press the button to move the bridge, turn the manifold to cut the gas of the burning pipe and pass to the next room etc.) it is linear to the max and the levels always feature two paths, one short and trunked that ends in a room with medkits and ammo and the other one, that goes to the end of the level. It feels very rushed, like if they had to cut a lot of the game to make the deadline.

Bittersweet so far. At least the gameplay is excellent, which mends a lot of the game.

Yep, the levels are complete crap. It's as if the Contract JACK crew was given charge of the levels.

I still think Quake 4 is a much better game overall. It's nothing original, but it's very solid and a blast to play.

Can anyone tell me why
Paxton Fettel was eating people?
First because he could get their memories from eating brains and second because he is batshit insane.

I have a question:
What happened to Jankowski? Why did he appear to warn that Alma was nearby near the end and suddenly vanish?

Does anyone have any experience running this game with 512 ram? I normally have a gig but one of my ram modules crapped out and I haven't had a chance to replace it yet. I'm wondering if it would be better to wait until I can get another to pick this one up.

I played the game on 512 ram. It generally ran well at the default settings, but it did stutter from time to time. Near the end of the game, it began to stutter more frequently.

I am hating the level design so damn much. There are some actually fun areas for going postal like cubicles but most of the levels are rectangular corridors with just one path and very little detail.

Good thing that the AI and the gameplay are pure gold, because otherwise it'd be bargain bin trash. And the narrative is horrible. After the official trailer I was expecting a lot of cool cutscenes and high production values, but the game is just another FPS in this regards. Heck, the demo was actually better than most parts of the game I've played.

From amazed to displeased =/

the monotony of the levels is driving me nuts. same night time corridor levels over and over and over, nothing to break it up.
