F1 2011 |OT| Not bad for a number 2 game

F1 2011 is Codemasters’ second Formula 1 game since they obtained the FIA Formula One World Championship license. Built upon the success of the first game, F1 2011 includes numerous improvements to the franchise and gameplay after critical feedback from its predecessor that will hopefully create the best Formula One game ever made.

Formula One is the most glamorous and adrenaline-fuelled sport on the planet. Racing on some of the best circuits in the world (and some Tilke atrocities), Formula One brings in over 525 million viewers worldwide, watching some of the finest racing drivers race at speeds of 220Mph with some frantic wheel-to-wheel action. In F1 2011, you too can race where only 24 drivers in the world can – in the seat of a Formula One car.

Many F1 fans have already played F1 2010 – so why pickup F1 2011 when it is just supposedly a yearly update with the new liveries for the teams and drivers of 2011?

F1 2010’s car handling was a decent blend of realism and accessibility for gamers that provided some highly entertaining action – however, it wasn’t very deep, and there were quirks to the driving model that lessened the impact of driving a Formula 1 car. Some kerbs, even in the dry, you could not touch without the risk of spinning the car unfairly, damp weather still felt relatively easy to drive on, and you could control any spin by just tapping the brakes – it was fun, but not particularly detailed.

There is a whole new suspension modelling system in F1 2011, which makes you feel more connected to the road than ever before. You can now properly attack kerbs, control oversteer just like in a real race car, actually lock your brakes up during heavy braking, and easily light up the rear wheels when you have traction control turned off and too much throttle. Each person will have their own preference as to what they are looking for in a driving model, but all the signs are pointing to a more rewarding and technically challenging experience for racers, yet the driving aids are still there to help novice gamers the chance to learn the Formula 1 experience.

The general concsensus from gamers who have played the preview of the game is that F1 2011’s is a massive improvement compared to F1 2010, which is sure to please everyone. The gif below shows off the new driving model to the extreme – this would never have been possible in F1 2010. Look at the suspension travel and wing flex:

F1 2011 now includes a full grid of 24 cars during online play - up to 16 players and 8 AI. Spectators can also now watch a race in session rather than having to sit idly watching the lobby screen.

Also new for F1 2011 is a full XP system for every ranked match online. Last year there was little incentive to race with 2010 performance levels - but F1 2011 introduces a fully-realised XP system that rewards brilliant overtakes, performances exceeding the expectations of the team you are driving fors, but it also punishes you for reckless contact. No longer will you groan when you are put in a HRT - you have the chance to earn massive XP beating cars you really ought not to. This will provide extra variety in the multiplayer action, as differing car performances will mean you will always be in the thick of the action as your level up and be ranked amongst the finest races.

This year you can play a whole season online with a friend or enemy in the same team. Inter-team rivalries bring along a whole new meaning in the fight for glory as you fight for the constructors championship. It brings an entirely new dimension to every Practice, Qualifying and Race, as you vie to get upgrades on your car before your team mate does and become the lead driver in the team.

You can start and stop the championship when it is convenient for you, so you can come back to the save whilst continuing other racing. You can also compare the amount of fastest laps, podiums, qualifying & racing positions whilst you look across the garage and see your main rival throughout the season.
This game mode is only available online – split screen is not supported.

Check out Codemaster’s Developer Diary on Online Co-Op here.

At last split screen has arrived for F1 2011. Now you can race up to a full season with a buddy on the same console. You can race from quick 1 lap races right up to a full season whilst sitting on the same couch, including practice sessions.

SAFETY CAR?!?!?!?!?!

QK4TN.png

For the first time in any Formula 1 game, the safety car is now fully supported in F1 2011. Deployed during scenarios of extreme heavy rain, or during a big crash with cars left stricken on the circuit, a safety car dictates a set pace for all cars to follow, forming one of the most expensive queue of automobiles behind it.

F1 fans have been crying out for the safety car to be implemented in a game for a long time now. It provides a unique element of tactical opportunities in races of over 20% – do you put on new tyres when it has been deployed? Do you stay out? Can you make the jump on the driver in front of you when normal racing resumes? Do you have to re-build your lead again, having seen your last 12 laps of hard work thrown away? Not only this, but you will also save fuel when running at slower speeds, so you can run a richer engine mode later in the race, plus you will have to manage the heat in your tyres.

In extreme circumstances a race can also be red-flagged, with the game deeming the race is too dangerous to go ahead. If you don’t like the sound of either of these real-world racing elements, they can be turned off.

It remains to be seen how well the SC is implemented, but the potential is there for the safety car to change the course of any race.

Post-race celebrations in parc ferme are now present, including that sodding finger. No longer do drivers just do a fist pump or a head shake in the cockpit post-race – we now see teams and drivers celebrating a win, or letting out the frustration after a poor performance in other sessions beyond the race.

iZfc46lyEEDF6.gif

LJ1fr.png

uiTg8.jpg

DRS and KERS are now fully included, requiring manual deployment like in real life Formula 1.

KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) provides a button boost of 80BHP over 6.67 seconds of a lap, which is replenished each time a driver crosses the start/finish line. This can be deployed at any section of the track, although is most effective whilst accelerating on the exit of a corner. It can also be used tactically to overtake or defend against an opponent. It was not used in F1 2010 by any teams, but this year all but 3 have a KERS system in place.

DRS (Drag Reduction System) is Formula 1’s new controversial rule that allows a portion of the rear wing to open, allowing cars to travel faster in a straight line to help aid overtaking. During qualifying and practice it can be used freely, whilst under racing conditions you must be within 1 second of the car in front at a certain specific point of the track to be able to open the wing for the subsequent straight. The effective effect can make a car 10-15km/h faster, but it does make the car have reduced downforce, making it more twitchy and less stable to drive. Do not use through a corner unless you fancy a trip to a gravel trap!

Note that, like in real-life, these specialised racing components can fail!

mwfQZ.png

ouVHn.jpg

All tyre compounds are included in F1 2011, and react just like their real-life counterparts. The tyres have arguably been the single greatest improvement to the extra excitement of Formula 1 this season, as more pit stops are required this year than ever before thanks to the tyres degrading faster. You can now experience this in F1 2011, meaning more pit stops, a greater variety in tactics to be used and also a larger variation in grip and effective performance of cars on track, meaning more overtaking oppurtunities!

During normal dry conditions a driver must use two different sets of tyres throughout a race – a hard and a soft tyre. If the race is at any point deemed ‘wet’, this rule no longer applies. Intermediate and full wet tyres are available for these conditions, each providing differing levels of grip for the amount of surface water on the track.

Discarded pieces of rubber from the tyres, known as 'Marbles' in the Formula 1 world, also have an impact on the level of grip the track offers if you stray away from the racing line towards the conclusion of a race.

t7sdD.png

sIvbo.jpg

The AI has been massively improved compared to F1 2010. They are more aggressive, make more informed decisions, faster at higher skill leves and are generally much more human in their race craft. They make mistakes, are bound by the same driving physics as the player car, and are more aware of their surroundings. Prepare to be challenged!

UrdmJ.png

iOedaZuZWd8Af.gif

• Paddock Area The paddock has been made more open and detailed, showcasing the life away from the action on the track in even greater detail.
• Proving Grounds Time trials are back, but there are also specific challenges to compete in that go beyond the traditional hot lap in the fastest car possible. For example, it could include driving a Mercedes round a soaking wet Spa circuit. Once more is known, this section will be updated.
• Race Director This is a new feature which allows you to see where people are, what tyres there on etc from the in game menu. It also allows you to see what happened to a particular driver who ended up at the back of the field. This is available in both offline and online game modes, and available in the post-race lobby so you can re-live some of the high and low-lights of the previous race.
• Weather An improved weather system not only has a graphical impact. For example, it is now perfectly possible for it to be raining in only a portion of the track, yet remain bone dry at the other end a few miles away as rain starts to threaten the racing action thanks to the dynamic cloud system in place. Weather can also introduce the safety car, and even bring out a red flag if it is too dangerous for racing
• Race engineer A more professional pit engineer will now provide you more detailed information during the racing action. He is also available in online races too; a new addition to F1 2011.
• Graphics Improved graphical fidelity, especially in regards to the detail of the environments compared to F1 2010. Individual steering wheel models for each team has also been implemented.
• Damage The damage model has been tweaked from F1 2010. Your car is more fragile than ever before, suffering from mechanical failures in reaction to the way you drive. Damage to your wings will now vastly affect performance – more so than in F1 2010.
• T Cam View The T cam has now been pushed back and down slightly, addressing complaints from F1 2010.
• Cockpit View The cockpit view is now more dynamic, reacting to heavy braking, corner turn in and impacts.
• Pit Stops Smoother pit stop animations, plus the pit release system is more aggressive, meaning you are no longer wasting precious seconds stuck in the pits when you could have been released earlier.
• Mechanics & Race Crew There is now more garage activity before sessions, and each team has their own pit crew faces.
• Kerbs You can now ride and attack the kerbs thanks to the new handling model. Not that you couldn’t do it in F1 2010...
• Bodywork The cars now have flexible bodywork, which is particularly evident at high speeds and with the use of DRS, making the cars look less rigid.
• Dynamic Racing Line The racing line has been improved for newcomers to the game. It has also been tweaked so that it lifts off of the ground in braking areas in a nifty 3D effect.
• Fuel You can now control the amount of fuel consumption your engine uses – so at different points in the race you can be more aggressive or conservative, depending on the tactical position you are racing in.
• Brakes Brakes are now a lot easier to lock and will now result in smoke coming from the locked up tyre.
• Flags & Rules There are both electronic boards that show the flag colour and also marshalls that wave them. The rules have also been re-tweaked with the aim of improving the reliability of correct decisions being made by the game during racing incidents.

OXM: 9/10
"This year's edition has scored one better. The main reasons are improved physics and the new focus on turning the game into one of the most exciting multiplayer racing games around."

IGN UK Review: 8.5
"Examine the environments close-up or grief the collision system by harpooning your way into clumps of competitors and, yes, the illusion will be temporarily shattered. Play it properly, however, and F1 2011 is an incredibly satisfying experience. Difficult and draining, but ultimately extremely rewarding. Few, if any, other racing games can truly match its intensity."

Gamespot UK: 8.0
"F1 2011 is a great sequel which captures the fragility of an F1 car for the first time and features significant improvements over its predecessor. Its extremely steep learning curve will frustrate many novice racers but will delight serious F1 fans."
Gamespot Video Review

OPM: 8/10
"a game about appreciation for the sport" "change the way you watch the Sunday affo Grand Prix"

Eurogamer: 8/10
"A marginally better outing than last year, then, and that's enough to ensure that, as F1 games go, this is still quite comfortably the best."

about5u9z.jpg

Last year we put together a small but competitive league for F1 2010. Racing every weekend with a qualifying session and race of 50% length, they were some of the most intense and fun races that many GAFers have ever had.

Although competitive, our races were primarily about fun. Some players put in blistering lap taps and ran away with the victory, but throughout the field there were constant battles from players of varying skill. Put simply, if you want to race with us we don’t care about your skill level - having a full grid is the most important thing to most of us! Even if you didn't play 2010 and think you may be left behind that's not going to be the case, as the drastically different driving model means that even the most die hard 2010 player will be learning how to handle the car and make use of the new features, such as DRS and KERS.

Last year we had one GAFer, Fixed1979, join us late for our second league despite never playing the game before a few days the league began. He was so new that during our first race he didn't realise that the first lap wasn't a formation one - until, of course, we all started overtaking on the first corner. Within a few races he had the pace that matched many of the drivers in the middle of the pack and pretty much everyone was impressed with his progress. So, if you're thinking that you'll be left behind in the dust and don't want to try - don't be silly! You might surprise yourself with how quickly you start lapping people.

You can see many of our exploits on our NeoGAF F1 2010 Youtube channel, but for a quick idea of what you’ll be getting yourself into, give this a watch:

2011vup3.jpg

Whilst nearly all of the 2010 vets will be back, the increased player count online enables new players to participate. Being restricted to 16 players means that not everyone will be able to join in, but if we get enough people interested there’s always a chance that we will be able to run two leagues.

Due to the increased player count this year, we will be able to have teams and run a full constructor championship alongside the driver championship.

This is how the participants, teams and assists will work this year:

  • If there are more than 16 people interested in the league, two qualifying sessions will be held. This session will take place under identical conditions on the same track. The quickest 16 players overall will make it in to the league, with the remaining players either being stand-ins for future races, or (if there’s enough demand and participants) a second league could be started.
  • Following the qualifying sessions, all names will be put into a hat.
  • The teams we have chosen to go with this year are: Red Bull, McLaren, Ferarri, Force India, Sauber, Renault, Mercedes and Williams.
  • We left out the last three cars (HRT, Virgin and Lotus) and the Red Bull clone (STR) so that we have 8 teams for a fair and even constructors championship. Sorry if you wanted one of those four cars, however:
  • All players will be assigned their cars (and thus teammate) at random by being pulled out of the hat. This is to ensure there are no debates/arguments about who gets what, and an attempt to keep teams random for the most interesting championship. It might seem lame that you can't get your favourite car, but as someone who was stuck in a Ferarri for our second league last year I can tell you that when you're racing you really don't care!
  • All assists, other than automatic gearbox for joypad users if needed, will be turned off. This is how we did it in 2010 which worked well, and with 2011 assists will give more of an advantage than ever. If you are worried about this - practice! You probably won’t be the only person to not use assists before and we were all in your position once. It makes you a better driver I promise! (Note: Traction control is subject to change depending on wet conditions, as is driving under Safety Car)

For the best racing experience, we suggest that players attempt to get two things:
whatotuse6bkf.jpg

Although a racing wheel and a headset aren't required they will improve the enjoyment of your experience greatly. Of course, we realise that a £80 driving wheel might be too much of an investment for a lot of people, but a large part of our league is the community and banter that goes on during a race - you might feel left out if you don't have a mic to talk to us with during the races!

ruleskuvx.jpg

As previously mentioned, the league races generally take place on Saturdays every week. The times are somewhat flexible, however given that it’s a Saturday and most people will want to spend the night out, we try to race between 4pm and 5pm GMT, which is early morning for Americans and... an ungodly time for Australians! We have racers from various different regions, so we try to make it work the best we can, but it does mean you might have to wake up early or go to bed late depending on where you live. We can give you milk and cookies to make the following sleep better, if needed.

The race day generally goes like this:

  • The lobby is set up 10-15 minutes before the scheduled qualifying session. We allow a 10 minute waiting period for anyone who doesn’t turn up, but if you miss that window you’re out that week. It’s not fair to keep people waiting 45 minutes for one racer when they may have plans. This is where any stand-in drivers who didn't qualify for the league can step in if they're online.
  • The race is set at 50% distance, all players pick the appropriate cars and the assists are set.
  • As soon as the lobby goes to qualifying, we’re in to Parc Ferme conditions so to speak. If your PC crashes, your net cuts out, you’re also out for the weekend. Sorry!
  • During the races we follow real F1 rules and etiquette. If you're being lapped, try not to hold up the leaders. If you're not sure that an overtake will work, don't force a crash to happen by sticking your car in the way. Same goes the other way - defend, but don't weave all over the track, and please check behind you! We want the races to be fun, but it's the one day when we have totally "pure" racing - it's a lot more enjoyable if everyone is respectful of each other.
  • Following the race, we interview the top 3 drivers for the post-race results post in this thread. We did this last year as a bit of a fun post-race event and it worked really well - apparently, some of those interviews got passed around the Codemasters office last year, so we’re not just entertaining ourselves!
  • Any members who are recording their races with FRAPS are more than welcome to upload their videos onto the GAF F1 channel on Youtube and these will be included in the post-race post also. We always enjoy watching the race highlights from a different perspective, so if your PC can handle it and you want to record some stuff, go for it!

pc4u0x.jpg

Just like last year, the game uses Games for Windows Live to manage friends, messaging and voice chat. Though some people have issues with GFWL, last year we found it very good for inviting friends and voice chat, so other third party software such as Mumble will not be required to play with GAFers.

We also have a group dedicated to the game on Steam which we encourage all players to join! The group is used not only to schedule league races, but also to connect players, use the chat room to get casual races going and even to commentate on real life F1 races! Obviously this thread will be the main focus when it comes to discussion on the game, but if you have the PC version of the game and want to stay connected to other GAFers who play the game, this is the group to join.

If you wish to have your Steam username and GFWL gamertag listed here, just post them in the thread and I'll add them to the following list. If you have never used GFWL before and need to create an account beforehand you should go here. Remember: You must have someone on your GFWL friend list to invite them, not Steam, so it's important to list that more if you just want to play with them.

As you can probably tell, the main community here on GAF is on the PC. There are actually a lot of console players here as well, however, and many have voiced interest in having a console league this year. As of yet, nobody has stepped up to organise anything, but if you want to be that person then please say so! We don't want a PC monopoly in this thread and would be happy to see the progress of a console league if enough people are interested.

Regardless of whether a console league happens or not, you'll want to play with like minded folks online, right? This is where all gamertags will be collected to ensure you can easily find a GAFer to play with regardless of your platform! Simply post it here with your platform of choice and it will be added to the list.

Don't have time to commit to the league or just want to participate in shorter races? No problem! We wouldn’t be much of a community if we only raced together every weekend. For the last year many of us spent night after night racing against each other in a casual environment. These races ranged from short 3 lap sprints which incredibly close and exciting racing, to races in the full wet with dry tyres and full damage on. To many of us F1 2011 is going to be our Modern Warfare 3 - we'll play it every night.

Awesome OT!

Will probably get the PC version of this again. Although my steering wheel doesnt fit onto my new desk :(

Must buy a new desk!

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.
Fantastic OT.

Next week, we shall be playing F1 again, only this time, with KERS, DRS, Safety cars and no Force India pitting bug!

Epic doesn't describe it. Look, but never stare, because here we go.

Aww shucks guys. /blush

Great job with the OP. Damn shame I'll miss out this season now that I'm taking classes but I'll follow things in the thread regardless. :(

Again, great job.

Lastly, awesome thread title.

Great OT guys.

I would love to hop in, but unfortunately am away from home working until probably May or June next year. Hopefully I will see you all in the F1 2012 league! I was playing quite a bit of iRacing before moving for work, and was sort of waiting for this game instead of jumping into F1 2010.

Do these F1 games support a 3 monitor setup?

Day one. I am so hyped for this game. Might even get into the Gaf social this time and do some online if anyone's up for it.

Off to play F1 2010 now :-D

Of course! Triple screen setups have been possible on ego engine codemasters games.

Great OP! I'm proud of everything. :D

Seriously though, I can't wait for this game. I can't wait to try out the improved handling model. I can't wait to 'fall off the cliff'. I can't wait to use KERS off the grid to perform amazing Alonso-esque starts and take the lead before Turn 1. I can't wait to race against the improved and more challenging AI and struggle to score points in a Virgin. I really can't wait for the Safety Car to be deployed during a 100% race and have it completely shit up my strategy. And I can't wait to race online. 'Go Compete'? Yes please.

Right I've added in the gamertags/Steam IDs of people from last year I know for sure are going to be playing again this year.

Everyone else will have to post their details :)

Terrific OP, good job guys!

I want in on the league thing:

Angst | Angst72 | Angst72

PC by the way.

So to clarify (I have stubbornly refused to learn anything about GFWL so far, but I guess that has to change) - if I want to join the league, I need to add people to my GFWL list AND my Steam list?

That is correct - steam is the priority as we meet up in the F1 2011 steam chat before the race. But you need GFWL to actually join games.

For invites etc you need to use GFWL. That's what we need you added on to guarantee you'll be invited to races etc.

Steam is more the social side of it, but we often setup chatrooms etc before a race, so it's good to have both :)

Ok, thanks for the assist guys :) Joining the F1 2011 Steam group took care of the steam part, I'll add people to GFWL as we go.

EDIT - do you guys have a tentative start date for the league? I presume you will give people some time to familiarize themselves with the game first, having a league race the day after release might make for some interesting first corner screenshots and some hilarious rage dumps though... :p

I will post info on the qualifying session to get into the league a week or so after the release of the game.

It will probably be about 3 weeks after release to give everyone time to practice :)

Do we know if we able to choose any team to drive for on Online Co-op Championship, by the way?

Subbed! Also throwing my hat in the ring, promising that I'll put in more effort to be in the league than last time. Also, dibs on Webber.

GFWL: Shaneus2k2
Steam: Shaneus2k2 (or Shaneus, but I think it's the former)

Thread title is amazing, BTW. The more chin references, the better.

I think my steam name is wrong but I'm not at home to check. Either way you can find me in the F1 2011 steam group

Trying to think of what I need to do before this comes out on Tuesday. I definitely need to make room on my SSD for the game and room on my media drive for recordings. I really need to get my headphone/microphone situation figured out as well.

Nice to finally have the information how how the league will be set up. Seems perfectly fair. One question though, any idea how you're picking the track or when we'll actually know what the qualifying track will be?
