Crap, I really don't like the way they used live action.

Disappointing season confirmed :(

I don't know, I have faith in the dude. It certainly doesn't look as striking/pretty as Mononoke, but it could certainly be interesting.

The only really jarring thing was the nurse though, I agree.

Hey, he had at least three minutes of screentime. :lol

You know, Kampfer was idiotic... but then they slip in a half second Marimite reference right at the end and now I feel like I have to watch it.

I'm such a fucking mark. I'll be buying that land in Florida next... :lol

Watched both episodes of A Certain Scientific Railgun and laughed my ass off. Really fun and light show.
It was needed after the (disappointing) ending of Basquash.

New Natsu no Arashi...

The second episode of Railgun was pretty bad. There's a certain point in which all the lesbo jokes get old.

I agree, it was kinda disgusting actually, but I think they're not related by blood. At least I hope so. None of shocker's photos seemed to have her in them and they were celebrating their becoming room mates which would be silly if they grew up as sisters.
Railgun is going to piss me off if something doesn't start happening. Perhaps I'm not being fair but I think the concept is way too good to use it as a backdrop for lesbian incest hijinks and making new friends. Much as I'd be disappointed if there's no life on other planets, we never develop FTL and they're only there to look at I'd be disappointed if there's no overall grand evil scheme in a show with people who have magic and ESP.

In fact one of the things that really pisses me off about anime in general is the damned nudity. They're almost always children, so how come even a show that isn't about sex has to throw that shit in there, even if it's just the OP? Like Natsu no Arashi, it's not highbrow but it's not some lesbo porn jaunt either, so why the fuck does she have to be bathing in the OP? Not that I'm completely opposed to nudity even if it involved children but fuck, don't make it delve into perverted shit. Handle it like Kurenai where they just bathe, like normal people do when they bathe. I don't go around grabbing cocks or ass if I'm in a group bath and I really don't believe teenage girls go around grabbing each others breasts in the shower. It's like it's all drawn by males and they're trying to insert this behavior into the next generation of women.

And episode 2 of Sacred Blacksmith in my opinion was worse than the first. I guess even good studios have to make a turd every once in a while to pay the bills.

Episode 2 of Kampfer was worse than the first, although for having a male as a female character they've done a good job not devolving into him molesting himself.

Episode 2 of Nyan Koi was again not funny.

I watched the first episode of Darker than Black and was pretty unimpressed. Not funny, the action pretty much happens off screen and not intriguing. I hope I'm wrong about it's tone but I'll be pretty pissed if all combat ends with them cutting to blood on the floor and a slumped body.

Letter Bee looks like it's just starting, seems the first 2 episodes were just to set the scene as it looks like it's jumping forward a few years. Could have probably done without these first 2 episodes then as if they just introduced him as a friend we'd take the show's word for it, not like they show brothers and sisters popping out of their mothers so we buy a characters relationship so we didn't really need this either.

This really is turning into a crappy season.

So far for me, Natsu No Arashi is the only thing I know is good, and the student council show is the only new show that I know won't be considered a timeless classic but is at least entertaining to watch. Railgun can be good if they actually do something besides using their powers to see each other naked and exact revenge for being seen naked or getting free vending machine food.

First Squad: I was overjoyed to see something from Studio 4C that had normal character designs and potential for kickass action scenes, and I was willing to swallow some shitty throwaway storyline to see it.

But First Squad is SO BAD.

So very bad. At first it started out kind of cute with the flashbacks and everything then it went to shit REALLY FAST. The live action "interviews" didn't help at all.

This is Wikipedia's entry:
Set during the opening days of World War II on the Eastern Front. Its main cast are a group of Soviet teenagers with extraordinary abilities; the teenagers have been drafted to form a special unit to fight the invading German army. They are opposed by a Schutzstaffel (SS) officer who is attempting to raise from the dead a supernatural army of crusaders from the 12th-century Order of the Sacred Cross and enlist them in the Nazi cause.

This is how I would write it:
Set during the opening days of World War II on the Eastern Front. Its main character is a teenage Russian psychic girl who needs to bring her friends back from the dead in order to fight zombie crusaders that the Nazis raise using an ancient sword. (DISCLAIMER: All of this happens in the last 5 minutes of the film, the rest is dedicated to useless boring talking. Live action "interview" sequences are interspersed throughout the film and there is no way to verify whether they are merely actors or actual people.)

Horrible, and the animation wasn't exactly amazing. It was good, but disappointing for a something from Studio 4C. Tekkonkinkreet is so much better than this tripe it isn't even funny.

Yeah, this has been a very crappy season. For magic, ESP, and evil organizations- just go back a year and watch Zettai Karen Children if you haven't already- takes a lot of those tropes you complained about and turns them around too. It's a gag series, but when it gets serious it gets awesome and stays there. I don't know how the hell this series didn't get a commercial release- it's mainstream as hell.

That, Guin Saga, and Ippo are the only 3 things I've found all worth watching this entire year- but thankfully those 3 make up for everything else in spades. (ZKC is more 2k8 then 2k9,but ended 2k9 so I count it)

Yeah, apparently the characters on Railgun are not related. She just does the Onee-sama thing because she's obsessed with her. At least it's not that depraved. :lol

Perving over, and by, little girls, is probably why. The Aya Hirano character was creeeeeepy. The first episode had a guy firing lasers from his crotch. etc. etc.

Still not watched DtB2 yet (soon, my pretties, soon.) Anyone watched Blue Literature?

And Trapeze... eh. I am a bad artsy anime fan; I hated what I watched of Mononoke, although it looked great I thought it was boring as hell. So I'm not really super excited about it, unfortunately.

Yumeiro Patissiere - Pure food porn, with some classical music. Nothing special, nothing offensive.

Sacred Blacksmith episode #2 - Story finally shows up, but main characters are still pretty flat and uninteresting. Seriously considering dropping this one.

Letter Bee episode #2 - A bit more of the same sort of thing from episode one. Art style is still really, really good. End of episode marks the end of the prologue and the start of the main story. Still interested to see what's coming up next.

Rankings:

1. A Certain Scientific Railgun
2. Kobato
3. Sasameki Koto
4. Letter Bee
5. Armed Librarians: The Book of Bantorra
6. Yumeiro Patissiere
7. Kimi ni Todoke
8. 11Eyes
9. Sacred Blacksmith
10. Nyan Koi
11. Kampfer
12. Shin Koihime Musou
13. Seitokai no Ichizon

So far I've enjoyed Scientific Railgun, despite the wacky underage yuri hijinks, just hoping something bigger happens in the next few episodes. First few episodes are probably more for character introduction anyway.

Kobato also had a good first episode, so I think I'll stick with that one. Kimi ni Todoke as well, had the right mix of comedy and touching scenes. Other than that I'll probably pick up Darker than Black 2 and maybe Bantorra.

Fairy Tail - MEEEEEEEH. Outside of the CG from Bantorra, this is probably the cheapest and blandest animation I've seen. It's flat, has a low framerate, and minimal movements. Background characters are embarrassingly undetailed. It doesn't really help that everything Fairy Tail does has been done before and better by a lot of other shows. The only saving grace of the first episode is that it has a smattering of genuinely funny moments and most of the backgrounds look nice. Thumbs down.

For some mysterious reason that's really ticking me off, no one wants to sub it. Evidently even the RAW providers haven't been in any hurry to get this out.

Can't say I was too pleased with the focus on the little girl...but hopefully it improves a lot. It's going to be a short series, so they can't afford to waste air time on school crap or the girl.

I think that's the last we'll see of the school

Watched episode 1 of Fairy Tail. Terrible. Dropped.
Agreed, awful.
  • Animation looks bland and uninspiring.
  • The whole magic seal thing they added to attacks look stupid and probably exists just so they can be lazier with the attack animations.
  • Also, we knew about it already but the character designs look off from their manga counterparts. Far blander now.
  • Voice acting is horribly miscast with Happy and Natsu. Natsu in particular seems like he got his voice actor mixed up with who should be doing Gray's voice. Lucy's voice actor fits her character but considering that its Aya Hirano, its more annoying than acceptable.
  • Opening is uninspired, which fits in with everything else about this anime I suppose.
  • Looks like they're going to rely heavily on Lucy and Aya Hirano to carry the show, which isn't surprising but sucks since Lucy is the worst character of the maincast.
I'm more upset that I am disappointed at all than anything else as my expectations were really really low and yet the anime still couldn't meet them.

The people at MyAnimeList are eating it up, of course. Not that there's anything new about that, they'll hype just about anything.

Just watched it, it's not actually as bad as i was expecting
i've not read the manga or anything so maybe that's why i didn't find it terrible
It was much better than the first episode of Sacred Blacksmith, if i were to compare the two

I'd pretty much put those in the same basket, although I did, for some reason, decide to watch the second episode of Sacred Blacksmith, whereas I have no desire at all to see more Fairy Tale.

At least Sacred Blacksmith will only last for ten more episodes.

Watching;
umineko
railgun
kobato
kimi no todoke

natsu no arashi 2 will wait for crunchyroll to get more eps and resubscribe.

I'm going back and watching Index because I dismissed it the first time I was introduced to it as another harem show. Surprisingly the male lead is likable though a bit overly optimistic/hero speech type at times. Railgun lead is a likable character on her own.

Hearing mixed things about dtb2, I still need to finish s1, will it be as good without the mini-arc format.

I suspect so, as well, but my main concern is the girl: I couldn't care less about her. It worries me that they felt the need to toss in a 13 year old girl into the mix.

BTW, why does Hei always go for the dramatic pause before he eletrocutes someone?

I was more than fine with it. Sure, there was some fanservice, but she wasn't an annoying moe blob and that alone is a marked improvement over 95% of this season.

And like BlazingDarkness said, I doubt we will be seeing the school again.

That site is ridiculous. Akira barely has an 8/10 and Code Geass R2 almost has a 9.

To look cool, of course. Chinese Electric Batman needs to maintain his image.

What I'll be watching this season:

Umineko (just on ep. 3, hooked)
Natsu no Arashi 2
Kimi no Todoke
Darker Than Black 2

Tentative about:

Kuuchuu Buranko (because it's not out yet)
To Aru something something Railgun (less lesbos, more action plz)
Kampfer (it's a bad show, but... oh god... I'm a sucker.)

Yeah, anything new and slightly good is suddenly the best show ever. It's not really a big change over sights like IMDB though.

Just saw the first episode. It's was alright but felt the animation could have been a bit better. A-1 Pictures has done better than this when it comes to first episodes in a series like Birdy for example had a very well animated first episode the action scenes for that series was jaw dropping. Anways they cut down the drama scenes in favor for more comedy scenes kinda took out a bit of the suspense when Lucy was on the boat. Overall the first ep for Fairy Tail was decent.

I wish magical academies/guilds would be banned from anime
It's the setting for far too many these days.

The manga-ka of Fairy Tail lacks diversity he's used this four of he's series now, the whole guild thing.

They play it down a bit after the first few eps- it's no worse then Yokoshima in GS Mikami. Muscle Okama is basically a Hard Gay ripoff, nothing too bad- he shows up more later- he's a recurring minor henchman. PANDRA's pretty unique for a bad guy group- which is a huge part of the charm of the series.

The series takes a turn after Hyoubu appears and starts becoming awesome (not due to him- he rarely shows) My only real problem with the series is Yamato Nadeshiko Minimoto. He's a little too goody-goody at times.

That said, after watching 37 eps of this- I'll shill this one to the end, I think it's that awesome- problem is no one believes me. No one believes me about Ippo either except for here.

i keep checking this thread hoping that Kuuchuu Buranko is out
even more exciting to know they use denki groove for musics

It's kind of old, but is Tweeny Witches any good?

Aside from the fact that the main character repeats her catch phrase [which is more or less the theme of the show as well] at least once every episodes, yes, it's good. Animation, art style, music, story, and the characters are all pretty good. I wouldn't go so far as to say great, but it's definitely enjoyable...well, as long as you can stomach having that line repeated over and over anyway.

Ouch, Fairy Tail. Failing to reach even the lowest of my expectations. Did they blow the budget on Aya Hirano or something? That was a very substandard animation. And Rave's first opening was like 100 times better than Fairy Tail's.

You know, the animation quality was really, really bad. Hell even the OP doesn't stand out. The ending is something that you see in anime with a few seasons in already. I enjoyed it, was fun, was cool, has potential.... but man did the animation truly blow.

Yes! This may be the season that I finally get into anime so I know what my friends are talking about!

*reads over the thread*

Damn : (
Maybe next year.
