of what I've seen:

Community: 9/10
Trauma: 8/10
Flashforward: 6.5/10

All have promise for being better.

I saw the Community pilot ep and IMO, thought it was OK, nothing great; Bored to Death shows more promise to me.

Just started on Lost and I was wondering if anyone can tell me if this site is reliable. They have a great deal on Lost S1-4.

EDIT: Nevermind, that site is up to no good. It even lists the show as region free.

Whats the consensus on V and Flash Forward?

V hasnt aired yet, but the advance buzz Ive read is very good. Flashforward was pretty meh. Felt like another case of ABC trying to find their LOST successor.

Just watched two new comedy pilots tonight. Both are on ABC.

Hank - Stars Kelsey Grammer about a guy who was rich and owned a large company but now has to start over. I want to like it but it's just not good.

The Middle - Stars Patricia Heaton, and Neil Flynn (Janitor from Scrubs) about a family in Indiana. Holy shit was this good. I was laughing like crazy. Reminds me a bit of Malcolm in the Middle. Highly recommended and it might be the funniest new comedy this season. Nice surprise out of nowhere and nice that there's no laugh track.

Can someone make a Cougar Town thread? This second episode was hilarious, I like the dad especially.
The one scene where the kid and the dad went to get revenge on the bouncer and the guy chased them was freakin hilarious

Pilot is the first episode of a show, usually shot months in advance to show the network and sell it to them.

I was channel surfing and found a black TV show on Fox! Its some sitcom Id never heard of, but it got me thinking.... there are only three black shows I can think of this year (this, Cleveland Show and Wanda Sykes) all on Fox!

Why does network television hate black people?

Ever since UPN died....there just hasnt been anything.

For every new show you see on TV each year, there were dozens of pilots commissioned by, shot for, and screened for the networks. Then they choose which ones they think are best (read: most commercially viable), and usually pick them up for a 13 episode run, or the full 22 if they are really confident.

The pilots that dont get picked up, we (in most cases) never see.

Well, the cookie-cutter formulations of 'Look: black people can be just as rich as, and even more domestically regular than, white people' are rooted in a kind of contempt for black people. No shows might be considered better than those kinds of shows.

you joking right?

No Im not.

15% of the population is black. Are 15% of the TV shows black (black majority or led by black characters)?

Ever since UPN died there hasnt really been any black shows on TV. I named the only three I could think of, all on fox. ABC used to have My Wife and Kids and George lopez representing minorities, but no longer.

I'd imagine that making a "black show" isn't as profitable and poses more risks. I'll assume that the US African-American population is 45 million people (15% of 304 Million), and half of that 45 million fall outside the 18-49 demographic. We're left with a max of 22.5 million people that's being targetted. The actual viewing audience, however, will be substantially less than 22.5 million. Flash Forward rakes in 10-11 million total viewers (3-4 million 18-49 year olds) and it's--for all intents and purposes--targetting as wide of an audience as possible. CW makes shows that targets young women of all ethnicities, and the best they can do is rake in 1-2 million of them for the advertisers.

Let's assume that we got 15-20 new network TV shows this fall. Your 15% argument implies that we should've gotten 1-2 shows that are black majority. You stated we got 3.

I'm not going to sift through every TV show's casts to count up the number of black actors per show, but I think its safe to say that a majority of TV shows' casts have at least one black person (and one Asian and one Hispanic too). Again, that's just reflective of the greater population.

This has always sorta bothered me. These networks pump a ton of cash into these pilot episodes and then it only gets seen by like a handful of executives. What's the harm in throwing them up on Hulu or something and at least recouping some of their money via ads?

It'd be cool if we could even rate them and stuff. Like "Here are NBC's 20 pilots for the season" and people could decide which ones they like best and do a survey or something. That's probably unlikely though.

i bet it has to do with legal problems. most pilots i believe are sent to the network to see if its something they would like. i think the ones that the network actually pumps money into usually make it onto TV, even for a limited amount of time. they cant just throw up all pilots since they dont own them.

that's a big wtf
why do they need to be a black majority or have a black lead to count?

you said 15%
are 15% of the main characters on TV shows black? There is no reason to only count those with a black majority or those where the main star is black

the sitcom you are thinking of is Brothers, and it fucking sucks. Everybody Hates Chris used to be good. but shows with major black characters include

Greys Anatomy
Private Practice
Scrubs
FlashForward
90210
Fringe
Law and Orders
Community
New Adventures of Old Christine

etc etc. i would say about 10-15% if you look hard enough.

Alright, so I guess there are a decent amount of black characters, but just nowhere near how it was 4 years ago when UPN had 5-6 shows.

One interesting note are shows based in DC. 50% of DC is black. How many characters in the last season of 24 were?

:lol You mean if you squint your eyes hard enough and catch all the extras walking by? Yeah, maybe you'd get to 15% if you really tried.
