That is a good point, but it's not like fan-pandering crap didn't exist back in the 90s and early 00s, although i guess these days it has become more widespread or noticeable. (because of the internet).

I think it could be said that even when pandering/fanservice was done, it wasn't always the focus of the show (most shows anyways). Take Faye in Bebop. Clearly there for fanservice, but that was in no way the focus of the show, it was an extra.

I think much the same way with "moe" for me it's much more about the story and plot that character designs. Where my above post looked at a single character in a show, lets go another step further.

From a purely visual standpoint. Not knowing the background of the characters (actual ages for example) these two shows don't look all that dissimilar. But (for those that know of both shows) while you would call K-On a moe-blob show, would you call Haibane Renmei a moe-blob show?

That's where the difference is for me. You can have cute characters in your show, but if that's the focus of the show that's when I get turned off the whole show.

You really are banking on index against a show by the "fucking" gurren lagann director? :lol
Yes. I've been let down lots of times by directors. But anyways, I didn't like Gurren Lagann so it's not like he has a shitload of stock with me anyways.

For me:

Panty & Stocking
Pokemon Best Wishes (probably gonna be the only one watching this seriously)
Star Driver
and maaaaybe The World God Only Knows (the first chapter of the manga was sorta neat)

oh and shinra tantei yakumo looks pretty cool, come to think of it

As I pointed out in my previous post, that notion tends to rely on the idea that people are only going from memory. In 15 years, if those people are complaining about "modern fandom" and think 2008 is the glory days, it could very well be because that is their particular taste. Assuming the anime in 15 years is different. Unless you are trying to say that the current anime season mirrors that of an equivalent in 88 or even 98?

I agree that there have been plenty of great 00s shows. Until maybe mid last year I wouldn't have said that the anime used to be better (more even if anything) as the issue wasn't a lack of quality as opposed to the larger amount of (as I view it) horrible shows. Just that has gotten a lot worse. Even in the past 2 years I probably saw well over 20 decent shows and at least 5 great ones. That has changed a bit drastically since sometime last year.

I find it interesting that some anime directors and other industry figures have said the exact same thing (with regards to moe, increasing otaku pandering at the extent of alienating others, etc...). Of course if that is posted on an anime news website/forum, plenty of people will say they are wrong and have no idea what they are talking about.

Well, I wasn't intending to say that anime is exactly the same as it used to be, but I personally find the quality on a similar level. I do find the increase in moe and pandering disturbing, but those shows are easy enough to avoid for me. My point was just that in 5-10 years time, most of that crap will have faded out of people's memory.

Personally, I still find great shows which make it all worth it. It does seem like there's an increasing amount of crap out there, but I think that stuff is easy to avoid, and it doesn't really impact my enjoyment of the great stuff. In a few years time, the majority of that garbage will have faded from our memories (just as I can't remember most of the crap I saw in the late 90s or early 00s) and most people will be talking about this era with reverence.

Of course anime isn't exactly the same as it used to be, but that's just the way all entertainment mediums are. I think the fact that anime continues to change is good for it (although I would like to see some good old fashioned Tomino-style mecha shows).

That's the difference between K-On S1 and K-On S2, if you want to boil it down to the essence.

Man, I was hoping there would be more newcomers in this thread. Anime will never reclaim its glory if people don't give the new season a chance >:|

Until the end of time.

Guys I'm having a hard time finding this thread. Not enough caps in the title.

EDIT: needs more TOUMA TOUMA TOUMA TOUMA

You think that is bad? BSD has been dead for a decade.

It's kinda sad that Imaishi is now gonna get hammered down as the "Gurren-Lagann director", specially considering how much he has done for the industry. He was a popular super-star long before directing Gurren-Lagann.

Not that I care that much but "anime is dead" or "moeshit" should be bannable offenses after seeing what other memes have been banned as it fits the description.

He should have stayed animator exclusive like Kanada.

Depends on delivery.

Little reason to give this new season a chance; most of the stuff on that list is terrible.

It should depend on whether or not the comment actively contributes to the conversation or not.

Another example where story and characters are the focus even with "moe" designs. This show even used it to it's advantage (can't imagine it looking any other way)

Panty & Stocking.
Gundam Unicorn.
Star Driver.
My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute - Maybe, the manga wasn't anything especial. At least the anime has decent art. I'll see some episodes to make my judgment.

WHY SO MANY SEQUELS

Fuck peace, I'm blazin see
the walking dead ain't fazing me.

Just bought vols 2 and 3 of Kenshin. Couldn't goddamn resist.

Wish I could get excited about Gundam Unicorn vol 2, but I just can't bring myself to pay the £30 for the first volume. Oh well guess it's one more release towards some kind of boxset...

The style is cute! I assume it would be adapted from something.

Kanada actually did storyboards for the horrible Final Fantasy: Spirits Within movie. Hell, he was the original storyboard director of FFXIII.

Wow, I blame sakura trees for all the pastels we see in anime these days. :lol

The official website of the animation studio P.A. Works (true tears, CANAAN, Angel Beats!) is hosting the second 100-second promotional video for the studio's 10th anniversary work, Hana-Saku Iroha. The project features original character designs by Mel Kishida (So-Ra-No-Wo-To) and an image song, "Patricia," sung by nano.RIPE. The story centers around Ohana Matsumae, a 16-year-old Tokyo native who ended up working at a onsen ryokan (hot spring inn). In the video, Matsumae introduces her friends and acquaintances who will appear in the project, although the video contains no actual animated footage.

Who knows how it'll turn out.

Oh god no!

Wait wait I thought the Hourou Musuko anime was airing this season, or was it spring?

Index, Panty & Stocking, My Little Sister, MM, and Iron Man for sure. I'll probably watch the first five episodes of Best Wishes then put it on hold for sometime after I've played through the games next year.

meh, they have to do some pretty kinky shit in order to get my interest nowadays. just the plain old tribbing only nets me half a boner.
Yeah, it actually did nothing for me. I was expecting a bit more from it since I never played the particular game this was based from.

Man, the closing of the Summer thread was like getting kicked in the nuts by my girlfriend and the parents kicking me out of the house.

Earl And Fairy. Enjoyable 13 episode shoujo show, brought down by the fact that the anime was part 1 and there will probably never be a part 2. Based on a light novel series.

Luckily you have another set of nuts, and a family you can stay with because you've been cheating on your girlfriend with their daughter anyway.

Don't think of it as being cast off, think of it as a new opportunity for conquest! After all, a thread's content is determined by the people who post in it.
