Regarding the Natsume clan, I can understand how Ikuhara included it to illustrate how
Kanba comes from a background where he feels unwanted and unloved before the Takakura unit gave him a place in life. But couldn't this have been depicted much more concisely? Making a big thing out of the Natsume clan meant dragging in Masako and Mario. The latter is completely irrelevant. Why were we even teased about there being two penguin hats and him having his own Seizon Senryaku, again? It never amounts to anything. Neither does Masako being a blood relative of Kanba, which does nothing to advance the show's themes about family. Masako continuing to be haunted by the grandfather was hilarious but pointless, like so much in this series.
This has been my problem with the series for a while now. Some things do come together, but a lot of things don't.

Penguindrum really isn't the best paced or most tightly plotted show, though it still works thematically despite this. I do think it would have been better as a shorter show with a narrower focus.

I've said this too, but apparently people like Jexhius think this is insanity or something.

I think with Penguin Drum Ikuhara just tried to do too much at once. It still kind of works out but it could have actually been a slightly longer series.

I said in the Penguindrum thread that perhaps Ikuhara should have split it into two shows, one being a surreal comedy about a stalker girl dragging a boy around on adventures, and the other being a magical realist family drama.

I think the episode count was fine. The story structure is just mismanaged. Plenty of things aren't explored to the extend they should be, but there's also a lot of time wasted.

Question, what were the focal themes of MPD, throughout its airing? I'm seeing thematic relevance thrown around a lot here, but from what I saw, honestly think the show was as confused thematically as it was with its narrative.

Love and needing to be wanted were consistently present.

The "forbidden" - everyone is striving for something out of reach.

Mawaru Penguindrum 24 (end):

I must be a complete idiot. I've watched this twice now, and I've still no idea what the fuck happened, or how we got this far or what all the stuff that came before had to do with how we got to this ending.

Ah well. It was a pretty fun ride anyway, even if I'm still completely fucking clueless.

Family. Love, both its presence and absence. The fate passed down to children by their parents - is it unchangeable or can they break free from its curse? How those who are unwanted and abandoned can be saved by a single hand stretched out to them. The willingness to sacrifice yourself for the sake of those you cherish.

Ultimately I consider Penguindrum to be something of a flawed gem. It has all the elements of a masterpiece but it's bogged down by a number of elements introduced that ultimately lead nowhere and leave a sort of unsatisfying feeling as a result. It definitely would have benefited the show to use a more focused narrative.

I think Penguindrum just struggled to deal with all the backstory it was trying to juggle. It led to pace and momentum killing flashback sequences every couple of minutes, and entire episodes dedicated to fleshing out side characters despite that information often not being put to good use or those characters outright fading from relevance. That sequence of episodes focusing on Yuri and the Natsume clan are probably the weakest part of the show.

"I love you."
Also how to cope with the burdens of family.

yeah, honestly, i can see what they were trying to do with yuri and tabuki showing the "bad path" that ringo and the others should try to avoid, but on the other hand, it really wasn't necessary and it didn't end up being the focal point of the show.

Kind of the same with the majority of the first half of the show. It really, really didn't amount to much except a little exposition for the themes of the show. The plot doesn't really, really get going much until the very end of episode 11 (the survival strategy train scene between shoma and ringo)

I think tthere was a little too much time wasted on various antics in the first 10-11 episodes (mostly involving ringo, some involving shoma and kanba).

There should have been a little more time devoted overall to the backstories of yuri, tabuki, masako, and kanba. Himari and Shoma were handled well, Ringo too, although her aspects could have been paced a little better and maybe the focus on her toned down a slight bit.

Mario could have been done away with entirely.

the 24 episode count would have been perfect had it been utilized a bit better. Less time wasted early on and a bit more time fleshing out some of the characters

Kyousogiga

Speaking of flawed works, this would have been much better had they dropped the pretense at narrative and made it a pure abstract work of visual insanity.

Adding onto that, I also think it's kind of a "fuck destiny", the power of choice is more powerful, and you can change your destiny no matter what fate is handed to you if you believe and try hard enough, which can really be said for all character on the show.

That Cartoon about Shin Megami Tensei or something 12: That was a very interesting way of handling the Shadow Mitsuo battle.
For a moment there I thought the director had actually fucked up and just skipped it.

Thanks for those answers, guys. My answer was that I saw it as a show of circumstance, and the trials against it, playing into the penguins as a motif...And, yeah, I guess the show did come to its thematic conclusion, if, and I'm going to try to summarize and simplify what I've seen by use of clunky metaphor:

[END SPOILERS/SPECULATION]

You're to look to look at the apple/Penguin drum as a kidney. A whole kidney. Both Kanba & Shouma were dying of kidney failure in their little magical floating boxes that made no sense, but Kanba was magically given the chance to live. Instead of taking the whole working kidney for himself, he takes only half, and gives the other half to Shouma. The series somehow goes on, they somehow forget that this ever happened, and Himari comes along, someone who's in need of an eventual transplant herself. Kanba takes up the task and, once again, sacrifices his own for another, this time with only a half of a 1/2--which in 'kidney terms', if I'm allowed that, lol, means that neither Kanba nor Himari could last long with such a small pieces, I don't think.

This leads to the momentary destruction of my metaphor, Himari's constant relapse, and Kanba's constant shrinking of his own time, in the effort to spare her... which at some point in time(that I didn't watch) leads him to making a deal with Sanetoshi/ 'the devil'...which extended his time, it seems, but on wholly negative energy of sorts (Which would be conveniently symbolized, I believe, by the red penguin stickers that rip out of him as he sees, and finds, 'the light'). Shouma, in all of this, exists only to give his original half in place of Ringo to give Himari a fresh start with a new bro. Both die in the end because Shouma, with his only half, just did a fresh, permanent, kidney transfer, and Kanba was long overdue; both parent penguins giving their all in the trial to keep 'their hatchling alive.'

Sloppy jotted, but it's what I made of the show as a half & an end, lol. Though, even with all that it still doesn't
explain to me leftover note, or reason for the repetition. I'm guessing this is supposed to be some time circle of some sort, and I missed that part of the show, since the little Kanba and Shouma, with all their theatrical speech, were at the beginning of this timeline too

Have you played much of the game? Is it good?

I guess it depends mostly on the mindset you go into it with. As an overall impression, I am greatly enjoying the game. While it still has its fair share of bugs and such, it's in a very playable state, the story is entertaining for all classes, and the worlds are varied and unique. The way the gameplay is handled varies by class, but it's basically Space-WoW with Lightsabers, more emphasis on story integration in the universe, and no auto-attack.

I would say yeah, it's good so and will only get better, I believe. I'm currently almost level 34 on my Jedi Shadow, and am enjoying it. The Legacy Name comes when you finish Act1 of your story, and can become the last name of all your created characters should you have them share your legacy, which will end up giving perks and special talents and such.

Except it's
Shouma who gives Himari a quarter 'kidney', not Kanba.

Really? Did that happen in an episode previous? Because it was Shouma
that handed her his half at the end, that she then showed an already dying Kanba.
The funkiness of the scene/symbolism sequencing would lead you to believe that all of this was
happening before Ringo/Shouma even initiated the transfer, but chalk that up to the show's continually bad direction as there's almost NO WAY this could be the case. There can't be.

Just finished watching the last episode of Un-Go.

What?
What the hell is this series? It has no idea what it wants to be. This episode has
a discussion of solar power taking place during a detective's 'case solved' speech, which was set up with a Saw-like thriller premise that's brushed over in seconds. Meanwhile, a big aerial battle between gods is going on outside.
'Kay.

I still enjoyed it as an odd curio.
Shinjuro having someone he could talk to and relieve some of his inner pain was a sweet conclusion, but having it just thrown in there at the end made me think about the missed potential of this series if it had spent more time fleshing out his character and his loneliness over the course of the show.
