Bjergsen is the greatest midlane in the world
Did they miss the entire point of the movie where it's the community that basically saves her? That whole section where she is completely isolated in the city but finds a surrogate family in the country? Am I going insane and just watched a different movie from them? Are these people asking for Japanese tragedy porn?
Zac and Justin are very self-absorbed as content consumers, and that tends to amplify itself when they are with one another. If something does not explicitly align itself with their world views or personal background they tend to be dismissive or write something off as small minded where it is reframed as uneducated and offensive (i.e. C3 Stella is suddenly holding the flag for American gun culture.) Wolf Children got slapped with the uneducated label and they work their way back from that to do the necessary mental gymnastics to justify that to themselves. Then you wind up with discussions about how Hosoda is a latent furry that inadvertently stumbled backwards into the culture. Also he is not a mom.

I think that's mostly why I can't stand ANNCast, even when other bloggers guest on the show. It's a weird echo chamber where they can spout things without really much thought and just have their beliefs affirmed. Like, for example, how Shinji is representative of the failure of Japanese masculinity even though Gendo is also Japanese.
I think it was great when he called Hosoda a lower tier Miyazaki though. Good times.

ANN podcast summaries are my guilty pleasure in this thread.
I hate you. :(

Who needs a throughline when you can just cut to the next scene of Jesus and Buddha chilling out on vacation in Japan?
I suppose that's true. lol
Well, unless you're a person who thinks it's all blasphemy, especially since Buddhists are all heathens and so on!

There is no fucking way that they accused of him that. Please god tell me that they didn't accuse him of being a furry.

Ok, putting aside how kemono culture differs from its American counterpart...

Latent?

What you see is what you've been getting!

This is, and has always been the problem with, Zac and Justin's ANNcast. It's pretty hard to beat a combination of ineffable smugness and and narrow narrow-mindedness that leads them to dismiss whatever opinion they don't already agree with - it's quite maddening. Heck, that's just Zac on his own! When you have them both together Zac cracks out an absolute stinker and Justin tells him how good it tastes.

I mean, I'm not saying you need a Garnett Lee to devil's advocate every position but you do need someone on a show with at least a modicum of intelligence so that they can challenge incredibly bad logic when it rears it's ugly head. The whole "a writer can't write about it unless they've experienced it" argument is so woefull that a manatee could poke holes in it.

How does that work as a movie though... does it even have a throughline?

It's structured as a "year in the life", so it's organized by the seasons of the year - spring, summer, fall, winter, ending with the end of the year. There are some recurring characters who provide something like subplots, but there isn't an overarching narrative. The material is pretty relaxed slice-of-life stuff, so it wouldn't really stand any artificial "big plot" imposed upon it.

But they went to film school.

Ah, that's fair. The OVAs had a bit of a thing where they basically had to hide their powers from the landlady, so it was all jokes based around that premise.

Sometimes I keep forgetting that the dude's a Precure fan. Looking forward to whatever fanart he does for HaCha.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - Episode 24

I love posting background shots from this show. It's just so great. Every episode there are fresh shots, and it really helps make everything feel visually rich. It makes every new location exciting and memorable. Sogood.

This was a pretty great "destination" episode. It was cool to see the different range of emotions expressed by various characters throughout the episode. Anticipation, uncertainty, hope, relief, nostalgia. I really like how the destination felt suitable surreal and magical, as it should, but also simpler in tone and more normal than expected. There are no surprise gotcha twists, there is no sudden dramas. Only the questions which were expected to be asked, and answers which make sense in the end. It really captures the tone of reaching the objective after a long journey, being filled with hope, clouded a little by hesitation and doubt, and then just seeing it through anyway.

The "fanservice" stuff was pretty funny, and while not totally out of character, it is somewhat of a rarity on the show. Aside from ep7, this is probably the only other episode where the crew just completely relaxes and behaves like normal people with an added animu touch. It's fine though, because it was handled pretty tastefully. I loved the first shot of the two girls jumping into the water holding hands. It's such a cute touch. I'm pretty sure SatoJun put that in the storyboard personally, since it seems like the sort of thing he likes. :firehawk

Detective Conan 261:
Pretty appropriate for this time of year. I felt a chill just watching this episode with all of the snow and characters shivering. This makes another good setup for an AO case (I'll have to see if they can stick the landing in the conclusion). Here we're solidly in the realm of what I would call imitation Conan, where the case and setup feel like something which could come out of the manga, although usually failing to hit the same level of excellence as Gosho's own cases. Most of the guest characters fit into a specific Conan stock, but I'm at least a little intrigued by the mystery. The soundtrack for the episode was also pretty strong, with them bringing out some of the better pieces of incidental music the show has at its disposal in a couple of scenes.

Apparently this episode aired in December, so I can herald consecutive AO cases without the Detective Boys as a (2001) Christmas Miracle.

I swear ponpo had the same cake!

And Jack Thompson went to law school
...
I never made that connection until now!

And can you imagine sitting in a class with them? I'd want to poke my own eye's out and pierce my ear drums!
I have no idea if they'd be the ones snarking at all the movies and unconditionally praising every movie made by a Polish director from the 40s.

Less lewd and pretty adorable. That ED was very good too.
Show is pretty funny. And the teachers are pretty likeable.

I don't know about you guys, but I've experienced magic while riding in a steampunk ship with space aliens.

And thats where I roll my eyes. That reminds me of folks saying you can't criticise anything about a work of fiction that involves magic or fantasy because its not real.

as much as the backgrounds look pretty character design are bland as hell meh :(

While the character designs aren't exactly exciting they do a fairly good job of updating and modernising the original designs without straying too far from what made them iconic. There's not a lot of wiggle room there unless you want to be really bold like, say, Fujiko show whatever it was called. I think they're pretty clean and attractive, for the most part:

I almost want to hate Watamote now simply because Zac seems to think it's amazing.

Heh. I disliked the one episode I saw and probably part reasons thats argued. About my life that I brought to the material. And so I could see it as a kind of rorschach test. Plus I fucking loath cringe comedy.

The weirdest thing to me about the episode though was the use of Wolf Children as a platform for a hate screed against so called 'furries' and how the film creeped them out a bit because of its furriness. But then I generally dislike the hate furries get on the internet. Especially since the folks who are sexually aroused by anthropomorphic animals are just the sharp end.

Finally caught up. Didn't care much for the big hat loli, I just can't stand her voice. EP. 12 was pretty epic though, only because of Satsuki and Mako(as always.)
I can't wait to see more of Satsuki's mother in action, I got a feeling she will bring more excitement and Satsuki action in the future.

What irritates me most about this whole ANN Wolf Children thing is that my copy is waiting for me at home but I'm doing Christmas with the family so won't get to rewatch the glorious snow sequence until I get back.

(also, not that there is any universe in which I would support Justin and Zac's arguments, but Wolf Children never struck me as being a particularly realistic film about the challenges of motherhood or anything like that, regardless of Hosoda's intentions of making it a paean to his own mother. It's a fairy tale, essentially, with idealised archetypes of characters - that's presumably the reason of Ame and Yuki being such simplistic opposites of each other. Why ask for dedicated real-life experience in a film that is almost entirely fantasy, regardless of the fact that it has no pew-pew robots or whatever?)

Merry Christmas AnimuGAF!

Her leitmotif is in German so you know she is the final boss.
