Alfheim Online is an offshoot of the ever popular Sword Art Online using the same systems developed by the ingenious Akihiko Kayaba. Taking the typical MMORPG tropes and destroying them, SAO was the first MMO to remove the things most players enjoy from the genre such as vast open worlds, engaging social systems, progression with new armor/weapons and the ability to keep playing when you die. ALO returns the typical MMO structure but does so in as bland and generic a way as possible. It's like the developers played every f2p MMO out there and took the worst parts from them to make this game.

Enviornment:

The dungeon design is one of the drabbest dungeons I have seen to date. Most rooms are completely void of furniture or detail as to the purpose of the room. A well designed game looks to tell a story through the environment. When the environment is nothing but a large empty hallway, players will lose the motivation to continue playing your game.

For a dungeon inspired by norse mythology, there is a severe lack of decoration and architecture from said inspiration.

Monster Design:

ALO's monster and encounter design leaves much to be desired. Half naked ogres are typically seen as mid level progression mobs used to level up, not epic raid encounters which hold powerful treasures. The encounter design can be seen in early MMOs from the 2000s. Bosses typical only have 1 special move they perform each phase and there is enough of a tell to give the players time to react to these skills. Usually these skills are unimaginative such as a shockwave that hits everyone in front of the mob. The simplest strategy such as turning the boss away from the main raid group should be sufficient to defeating this simplistic encounters.

Combat Design:

As touched on above the combat in this game is simplistic at best. There are very few abilities and most battles can be won by just spamming one button. The animators also don't seem to know how weapons work as players with maces poke the enemy rather than swing at them. There is also a lack of weapon variety for a fantasy game. Axes, spears, maces and heavy two handed weapons are all staples of the genre that are sorely missed when the game is overflowing with 1 handed swords.

Overall, I give this game a 8/10. This game lacks variety and character to hold a player's attention for long with many simplistic mechanics and poor art direction.

For your information, english isn't my first language , i have enough knowledge to enjoy the passion and hobbies i enjoy in other languages than my own, and that's why you see me in some imports threads in the gaming section.I expected to be able to discuss the vanadis universe/lore/character with you since you quickly stated that you've read the books up to 10. My attempts didn't pay off. it's a shame.

Archer was so good, so badass.

i understand and i agree too ... but in this case i was talking about something specific related to the adaptation since we are in an anime thread.i would love to talk about the LN but in another place, one day . it would be hard to talk about it without resulting in a sea of spoiler bars.

Well this episode did have nice particle effects as expected from Ufotables battle scenes. That said, the choreography wasn't actually all that interesting. On top of that Archer was superbly underwhelming. He could've tried to kill Illya at least since Berserker was so far away. His two awesomely animated and promising arrow shots however...ended up doing jack shit. Like damn, just how anti-climactic was that last nuclear-explosion-special-arrow? I was like "oh shoot, Saber actually just killed Berserker? Guess the pacing's gonna be faster than I thought... oh no, he regenerates without Saber even attempting to interfer -_- But wait! Archer? Oh shit, look at this. HOLY SHIT THAT EXPLOSION AND he's not even scratched and everyone goes home, kkthxbye.

Still, much better episode than the previous two. I'm also kinda glad to see Gilgamesh even though he makes this new Archer look that much lamer.

Gratz on Eva ending! Within a mere week I went from "wtf is this shit I'm watching at 3a.m. in the morning, is this a joke?" to "the ending of episode 26 is fucking awesome". I also kept reading up on Evangelion for weeks to come.

Now you go and enjoy EoE. You'll get one of the best animated fight sequences ever with that one!
