I dunno if that's really the case. The biggest sponsors for the show seem to be TV Asahi themselves. I'm not sure what they were expecting from it, but the TV station has been the main source of publicity for the anime, and they announced it really early too. With the ridiculous time slot the show has, it seems counterproductive to whatever they had planned for the show. Maybe something just went bad, and it's already being written off as a loss, because TV Asahi doesn't generally broadcast late night anime at all, so who knows what happened.

The BD/DVDs aren't going to sell much either, but it's worth noting that they're distributed by Pony Canyon, and not Aniplex, so it's not a huge Sony vehicle either. The show also does not have typical OP/ED tie-ins, so that's another revenue stream that's cut off.

All in all, it seems more like an over ambitious artistic project which will likely never make its money back, and will probably end some careers and business partnerships when the dust settles.

Horizon still close to 20k, I'm happy... Couldn't care less for SAO sales, just thinking it as payback for A-1 for Tsuritama and SSY.. Kinda wish that number could flipped for Accel World.
