Ghost in the Shell

Decided against making a LTTP thread, because if I screw this up somehow, at least I'll only look like an ass to anime-GAF and not GAF as a whole. Plus, I'm still too timid to make my own threads :(.

I tried watching the original Japanese dub for this, but it became too hard to follow. The subs seemed to move faster than most subs I remember, and it was just constant transitioning from reading to watching. So I changed to English dub to follow it better. Maybe I'll watch the original dub at some point in the future.

Three major things stick out to me:

1. The animation. I think that the look of this movie has held up pretty damn well considering the time it was made. I really like the character designs in particular, and the animation was pretty smooth, yet you could tell this wasn't state-of-the-art (couldn't find a better way to put this; there probably is one). Which is fine with me. Though I would be very interested in a blu-ray version, as long as it's not 2.0, which is apparently trash.
The animation was about as state of the art as you can get. The movie was entirely digitally composited. In 1995.

Printed out to film for storage though, but still digital.

Dexter - Season 1
Should I be hating on the asshole cop who's suspicious of him?

Ha, I just recently finished watching that scene.

It's so weird because he seems to be written to come off as unlikable, but should I be rooting against someone trying to catch a serial killer? So conflicting! Then there are moments like
when he shoots that haitian guy in cold blood and tries to cover it up, obviously coming off as a dirty cop, but then you find out the haitian guy was some really dickish former general who committed all sorts of atrocities.
Nice Dexter spoilers there Sloth, might want to cover those.
Season 1! From 2006!

Oh, fine.
Now that's a show that's better than its source material. If only all anime could be.
Didn't know it was originally based of a novel, but makes sense now that I think about it.
The Ice Truck killer did do things (like leaving the barbie doll pieces, smiley face in the blood, etc.) that were very reminiscent of crime novel bad guys. Guess now I know why!

The appeal of GuP is that is more a classic sport anime than a military otaku show like Strike Witches for example with all the fanservice. And GuP is of course well made, a big and adorable cast, many lovely 2d animations, CG stuff is well-done, Soundtrack and good pacing.

I watched the first episode. That whole first person CG sequence it opened with was not well done at all.

A truly great movie, fantastically directed and visually exciting. It has tons of that 80's cheesy atmosphere but you can't help but marvel at the finesse with which it was all executed.
Every few minutes I would think to myself how I should tale a screencap of a scene and post it on GAF but in the end I decided it's best not to start doing it or I would lose a lot of time trying to pick out my favorites (and I think most of you guys already saw this). Dezaki reaffirmed himself as one of my favorite directors in anime, great stuff.

If I remember right, he doesn't kill his bro in the book. He frees his sister and indulges a little real life family time and kills LaGuerta. She dies at any rate even if I can't remember the exact details!

I have shamed my ancestors.

Forgive me, Trejo-sensei.
Didn't mean to call you out, but I still treat spoilers as spoilers.

Anyone else do that or am I a grumpy old man today?
No, actually you're right. It's pretty shitty for someone to come into the anime thread and then find spoilers about a show they'd normally never have to worry about finding in here. My bad.

I can understand that if they're dressing up like actual people even if only in jest. I just assumed it was a co-opting of the aesthetic people took issue with.
I think that's part of it too. Although I guess I have less a problem with the German stuff in Strike Witches (mostly because I was too busy noticing the lack of pants).

Do you have this same issue with games where you can play as the Axis/Commies/terrorists/etc?
I don't really get much out of dudebro war games nowadays for what that's worth. And most of them are so safe that it's usually Americans vs Russians or something equally generic as to not offend anyone.

But that's just one side character.
Sure, but then there's just the idea of a mangaka or whomever being obsessed with German tanks.

Appropriate place for this?

Sell me on an anime, preferably something on Netflix. Have the itch to check something out that's new to me.

Oh wow. I'm not sure which scenario I prefer. Although,
It's sort of shitty in that he breaks the Code of Harry in the novel's version. Then again, it would have been interesting to see he how he would deal with the aftermath of killing LaGuerta and letting his brother live. Plus I wouldn't mind seeing LaGuerta kick the bucket.

Thanks for that interesting piece of trivia. Like an alternate reality version of what happens!

It just gets weirder as the books go along. Not going to bring that stuff as I haven't watched past season one and don't want to inadvertantly spoil anything.

Have you seen Kiddy Grade? thats a fun show. Very colorful, awesome characters/powers, action, sci fi setting, unique art style.

Well look at that, another good episode of Magi, and a surprisingly uncensored one at that. (The fact that they can get away with this is pretty strange considering what they can't get away with on JoJo's, but whatever.) The arc was concluded satisfactorily, the pacing felt right, the animation was consistent throughout (bar some stills) and in general it was an enjoyable experience.

They music is still, unfortunately, a bit of a sticking point. Besides the excellent OP theme I can't really think of any other music that I like in the show. Sometimes I don't really notice it but when I do notice it it's usually because it's distracting me in some manner.

Anyhow, this is what a bad guy looks like, apparently:

Ga-Rei Zero. God-tier soundtrack, bitchin' action sequences, solid dub, more FEELS than you can shake a stick at, and some of this

It's not a good show, though. You'd be far better off watching something like TTGL, which I know is on netflix. Sadly, I'm really not too sure what else is on netflix, I generally just stick to CR and occasionally Hulu.

I just got done watching Baccano! and it's some pretty quality stuff. Great soundtrack with fun characters and an interesting story. And it's set in 1930's New York (mostly) which is a nice change of pace from the usual fantasy or sci-fi setting.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan like DTL suggested would be a good choice too. Giant robots and manliness a plenty.

That right? It's always a strange feeling when an adaption ends up being better than the source material.

Well, for the first two seasons anyway ;_;

Yup.

One Outs 1-5

Man, Toua is the textbook definition of "The gambling man." It's strange that he also looks exactly like Hiruma from Eyeshield 21, another character who loved to play with the slights of probability (usually successfully). Along with that you have the greedy, business-oriented owner and not-as-clever other teammates for him to interact with, per usual sports anime. So far, I'm liking it enough*.

*Part of me wishes it was more Shounen™ though.

I think it's worth pointing out that One Outs has the same director as Kaiji.

And the same guy handled series composition.

They also share a scriptwriter...and storyboarders...animators...

And Toua is voiced by Kaiji...

Thanks for the fun fact. I have Kaiji on my list next.

I've been in a game anime type of mood.

The one event that they should have adapted and they don't. Figures.

Not to be contrarian, but English is a West Germanic language (along with German).

I was just joshin, I know English ain't really our language. The "bastardization" we have is though I guess.

Congrats, Cosmic!

Luckily I still had power during and after Sandy. I got lucky. Just had to deal with no internet for a week or so which is no biggie really.
Actually, looking at ANN the two shares share about ten members of staff.
I wish they'd do another season. The stuff right after where the original show ends is pretty good. Or at least, I personally think it is.

welcome back!

You guys dont have generators though?
Generators are worth their weight in gold.
Generators are not something you typically need to have in the NYC metro area.

As the weather starts changing though, that's something might change along with it. Certainly, there will be a lot more folks with generators in Staten Island the next time a big storm comes rolling through. The issue then will be whether those folks know the Do's and Dont's of operating a generator.

Always worth having a generator. Especially since people dont like their trees cut back from power lines for some reason. Plus the heavy winters and aging infrastructure up there. A generator is totally worth it. Maybe even two (or three if you're my Dad).

Nah, and even if we did, there's the whole gas issue. The people we know that did have generators only used it for their fridges and to charge stuff, not for actual lights and other electricity things.
