Tomodachi wa Mahou
Chuu-2 06

Definitely my favorite show of the season. Manages to put a smile on my face like no other show this year. It was stunning to watch an episode with Kumin actually not napping.

And as somebody who will probably be
bald
by the age of 35 this episode cracked me up and made me :( at the same time. But looks like it was worth for him in the end.

Deko x Mori is always good stuff. Really though Rikka is still the best. Enjoying the entire cast though which is ridiculously rare for shows like these.

Wow. This was really, really terrible. Might be the ugliest show I've watched all year (some of these scenes are just lol wut, the boxing scene and the fountain scene in particular) and this isn't manly, its just stupid. I hope this gets better quickly or it'll be a quick drop. I really enjoyed the Jojo OVA but so far this is just flat out stupid without being enjoyable.

Nice ed though.

yeesh
I knew you had bad taste but thats just next level

Utena 25

DAT CAR PORN. So good.

Akio's facial expressions are fun to follow. In particular,
his shit-eating grin after playing the part of forlorn romantic with Utena
was great. He also seemed super pissed about
Utena's sword vanishing, though it seems like he was more concerned about her losing than the sword itself.

I've been trying to warm up to Anthy ever since she trolled the shit out of Akio's fiancee(somehow seeing someone with the exact same opinion of Anthy as me made me appreciate her more. idfk), and taking her glasses off and letting her hair down was helpful to that end. Unf.

Saionji Corner
-I realize that phallic imagery is omnipresent in Utena(and in Utena! hey-o!), but the implied wanking in the scene where Touga walks in on Saionji ringing out the washcloth made me giggle something fierce. Touga's "Cleaning the floor at this hour? You're so conscientious. selfavatarquote.jpg" sold it so hard.
-Why does he turn into such an unlikeable douche whenever he puts on the school uniform? I swear he'd be one of my favorite characters if he just stayed in his samurai getup.
-Jesus christ man what is wrong with you?

Since I just started watching stuff from this season yesterday, the only things I've watched any of so far are From the New World and Psycho Pass. I intend on checking out a number of other shows soon.

Natsuyuki Rendezvous 11:
So...that was an ending.

I really enjoyed most of the series, and I thought the themes of loss and moving on/not letting go were handled poignantly for the most part, and the last episode for the first 95% fit right in with the rest of the series. There was some strong drama, a well written and genuine feeling romance, and some great humor after the last exhale.

But I really, really could have done without that epilogue. It just felt completely pointless. I think it would have been much better to just end with
that last scene of Hazuki and Rokka together in the forest, and not suddenly jump forward so far and give us a rather bizarre ending.

This is just further proof why epilogues are inherently bad and should be avoided at all costs. Especially when they're accompanied by
'X years later'/characters now have kids/grandkids
in them.

Psycho-Pass - 05

Yeah, this was a pretty good episode. Some nice hints of character development, cool police work and a tiny bit of action. The inconsistent art was a bit jarring, but there were shots that looked really great IMO, like the reflection of Akane and Shinya in the dirty mirror.
Hopefully the show continues to improve.

Why?

ilBgtX2GccKwP.gif

Well, continued use of terrible CGI aside, I regret to report that the awkward direction in the previous episodes is not entirely done away with. Much of the storyboarding, from Nobutoshi Ogura who also storyboarded episode 4, seems to be fine, but there's some weird uses of cuts to black throughout. I suspect the episode director, Makoto Fuchigami, might be a pseudonym, because his output is sparse and yet spans back to 1997. I will say that the music direction was substantially improved in this episode, and the direction seemed to become more atmospheric and closer to the early episodes as it progressed. I also continue to find the story proper extremely interesting.

The next episode, to prematurely judge from the brief preview, looks like it may return to the complex and evocative storyboarding of the early episodes, among, um, other things.

There's far more work put into this setting than there ought to be. Also :lol at Led Dragon. I wondered if the LED Dragon in that Five Star Stories timeline was supposed to be the Red Dragon after seeing that.

Looks like other criminals are hiring J9 to protect them from Khamen Khamen and the Nubia Connection now. J9 is surprisingly humble as they realize they might not be able to do much in an all out war between criminals.

Fuck yeah, got a fleet battle in this too.
It wasn't very good much like the super robot action usually isn't. :(
Definitely not the show's strong suit. Speaking of the super robot, it didn't show up this ep either. One of the perks of a two parter, I suppose.

Zetsuen no Tempest 6

Although relatively subdued and somewhat uneventful, this was a really good episode, as it provided considerable character development and several intriguing revelations. Despite the lack of action, the episode was very well-paced, never faltering in it's execution. An unsettling atmosphere permeated the episode, particularly the ending.

The reveal that
Hakaze and the Tree of Genesis are more likely to destroy the world than the Tree of Exodus
is thoroughly interesting, since it foreshadows a seeming inevitability, once
Yoshino and Mahiro become fully aware of this knowledge, towards fractures within their alliance
. The conclusion of this episode and the preview for the next indicate a distinct potential for a development that could potentially diminish my enjoyment of the show ever so slightly. As it is, so far, I’m not particularly bothered by the sudden emergence of this
strange, unexpected dynamic to Mahiro and Aika's relationship
, but, unfortunately, I can easily see it becoming an unnecessary and flawed distraction from an otherwise compelling story, due largely to the possibility that these developments will essentially alter the perception of
Aika and Yoshino's beautifully melancholic moments from their past
into fragments of memory that are solely indicative of nothing more than
Yoshino's one-sided devotion and Aika's emotional detachment
.

Yoshino is by far the best and most compelling character, since
his true nature and motivations remain rather mysterious and indistinct
. There's an intriguing dichotomy between Mahiro's sole, simplistic desire for revenge and Yoshino's ominous, unpredictable complexity. He possesses a tendency to subvert the expected, as displayed by
his subtle manipulation throughout this episode
. Hakaze is my second favorite character, and I love the occasional
flashes of insight into her past and the events surrounding her seemingly tenuous existence
. I'm hoping she'll be
leaving the island soon
, since I'm quite looking forward to her interactions with the others, particularly Yoshino.

Aika's an interesting character, but, especially after this episode, she's rather unsympathetic. Her characterization, though seemingly intricate and rather engaging, is lingering on the precipice of disappointment, since, though excellently handled in this episode, she could easily devolve into an uninteresting repetition within the story. As such,
her development in this episode was unfortunate, since it occasionally portrays and potentially indicates a very flawed, deceitful character, while consequently cheapening her relationship with Yoshino
. Of course, there were several instances of foreshadowing suffused throughout the earlier flashbacks, so it's certainly not a particularly surprising direction for her character to take.

Ando's direction, so far, has thoroughly elevated the material; material that, due to the ever-increasing likelihood of a plethora of intermittent contrivances and cheap, unexpected developments, would likely be faltering immensely if the story hadn't been so meticulously constructed. Oshima's sweeping, melancholic score complemented the foreboding tone of this episode really well.

All in all, Zetsuen, surprisingly, has consistently surpassed my expectations, especially in regards to the effective storytelling and exceptional direction. Since the execution of the narrative has been highly impressive throughout, I remain hopeful that, as the story progresses, this won't deteriorate into a convoluted, unsatisfying mess.
