Just wanted to chime in and say I totally agree with you.

Outside of the amazing music I didn't find FLCL enjoyable at all. The whole thing feels completely haphazard with characters that range from completely uninteresting to utterly annoying. It's worth watching once just for the visual and audio experience of the whole thing but I can't say that I actually enjoyed it nor can I say that I'd ever want to actually want to watch it again.

When you watch Gainax's earlier work it's pretty easy to tell that the people working on these properties were huge scene fiction and space dorks. It's kind of cute how their enthusiam shines through in their work.

It's awesome, and I definitely wasn't expecting that. As a fan of Carl Sagan and Hawking the space and science bits really grabbed my attention. In fact, I've often thought of the effects of relativity and what it might be like to jump forward in time by slowing down your own clock. I've also had nightmares about descending through the surface of Jupiter. This show is really special.

I absolutely love the design of the ship in Episode 6:

Well, I don't know about that. While it's pretty inconsistent across the OVA's there are some pretty amazing sequences.

I'm being a little unfair when I say that the animation never goes balls to the wall. There are without a doubt some amazing sequences, but they are juxtaposed by still shots and pieced together story-boards. I don't view this is as a negative, since it breaks neither the presentation nor the tension. But the visual tempo peaks and dips in a way that never fully engages with any extended action or sakuga. That's where the comment came from. Again, this isn't a complaint since it isn't necessary, and the story works just fine as is (especially since the story's antagonist isn't really a villain). It was just an observation.

These scenes were stunning.

Watching Gunbuster reminded me of two things. One; I love strong, foundational story-telling. And two; I'm dreadfully inexperienced in older anime. If anyone has some recommendations for some classic shows (or just some good ones - older or more recent), I'm all ears. The only experience I have with classic anime are the Miyazaki films - which I've seen several times and adore. I'm also going to check out Diebuster this weekend (which is the reason I wanted to watch Gunbuster in the first place), and now.. my expectations are kind of low. I'm still expecting a fun ride at the very least.

A bit late here, but:

To boil it down to it's barest essence, there was really nothing I enjoyed in FLCL apart from a few of the battles.

I didn't like the characters. I didn't like the vague elements of story that were present. The randomnity of the whole series didn't settle well with me. The creators themselves have said that they did it just for the sake of doing that, so it's not just me "not getting it". From the impressions I've seen of people who did enjoy FLCL, it generally was either that the entirely random occurances that are strewn throughout the show amused them/had some sort of meaning for them, or else they felt some sort of bond with growing up in a small town with nothing to do. That aspect of the show really annoyed me, though. The MC is always complaining about how there's nothing to do, yet all sorts of cool stuff goes on around him. Before people start jumping on me for how I just didn't get it, since that seems to be what usually happens in these cases, there's a difference between missing the point of it all, and realizing that the point isn't particularly interesting or worth my time. Same deal with stuff like Hyouka.

I'd certainly be interested to know why you like it, however!
