Too many. After a while, many are very similar and nothing special. Only a few are really "special" and worthwhile imo. Quantity over Quality if you ask me. In particular the south-west,
where radiation is everywhere and you can even go "beyond the map" there is basically nothing of worth, even tho that there are quite a few locations. The only cool location I have found turned out to be rather boring. I even found a friendly Children of Atom settlement, but I couldn't do anything there. =/

Tho, that east city is very clustered. Took me a whole day of playing to get through that.

yeah this is how i feel after having reached the same point roughly (i'm wandering around post-game though so it's even worse, haha)
there's so many locations and they all have some unique detail to them but it's like maybe one thing and usually it's not that interesting. it's overwhelming in terms of sheer number and all locations having that one unique thing but ultimately the world feels very same-y because of that too.
a lack of strong characters and settlements alongside tons and tons and tons of locations with respawning enemies and infinitely generating MMO-style quests just gives off this really bad MMO vibe that is unfortunately really tiring
 
Zuku you realise there are quests that send you to a lot of those places right? >_>

Pretty much. The worst one for me was being in the
addiction vault with Cait and thinking "this is a good place for your quest to trigger maybe since...you know..."
and then getting the quest later and wouldnt you known, shes heard of a place that can help her :p
 
You know what I really hate? That quest items fuck up your inventory and you can search through 200+ items to find that particular Holotape you have to listen to. >_>
 
Alright GAF.

I'm about 2.5 hours in and this is my first Fallout game. So far I've helped the people out, therefore acquired the power armor, repaired it back in sanctuary and helped them out a little by building beds.

I'm not looking for really guidance on the story/quests. Talk to people, go find new places, etc, that's easy enough.

However I want guidance on regular Fallout mechanics....if that makes sense. I have 3 levels to level up but I have no idea what to do. I feel lost on this part. Can I pick pocket people without repercussion if I don't get caught? I think companions are new so there might not be a lot on this. If I tell Codsworth I want to take him, does Dogmeat stay in Sanctuary and is Sanctuary like home base? I assume this is where I set up a settlement? Power Armor, do I always need fusion cores to move it? Can it be stolen?

Appreciate any tips or a link to a site for a newcomer to the fallout universe.

Same - though I haven't actually started the
Bunker Hill proper
portion yet.

My issue is that there is no ideal side for me yet so I'm still exploring possibilities.
I am pro synth and pro synth freedom. I believe the Institute's work is profoundly important to the wasteland but I disagree with their ultimate goals.

A compromise would have been to let them continue their research with the caveats that they stop kidnapping people and they start treating their more sophisticated synths or synths with memory transplants (like Nick) like people and not slaves. Also holy shit would the Institute benefit from being more transparent instead of being some dumb boogey men. Had they been open in communicating with the outside world they wouldn't even be in this position. They are poised in the ultimate defensive position so they literally have nothing to lose by being more transparent. Instead they are shrouded in secrecy with their massive hard ons for collecting rogue synths when they used to just throw defective units away.

As for the Railroad I thought they were decent until I found out they want to free all of the current synths in one go and destroy the rest of the institute. I feel that in a post apocalyptic world that is incredibly short sighted.

As for the Brotherhood of Steel... what can I say? I'm glad the fascist assholes are back. The Outcasts in FO3 were the closest thing to a proper Brotherhood faction seen in the last generation but now we get a return to form in FO4. That is to say fuck them and all that they stand for!

So yeah I'm not quite finished with the looming
Bunker Hill incident
but it feels like a proper climax and I hope to we get a
New Vegas-like "my side" solution
instead of being railroaded (no pun intended) into one direction or another.

- These games are good for allowing a variety of builds that can get you to the end of the game. With that said it's easier than ever for a new comer - just look at the perks you would like to have that suits your playstyle and only give yourself enough stat points to reach them - that's generally a good rule to follow in your first play through.

- The only repercussions to stealing are if you are with a companion who specifically doesn't like it. It will effect your social-link with them.

- Companions stay wherever you tell them to or they return to the place you found them. Most people chose Red Rocket Station because it's small and the companions are easy to find.

- Power Armor cannot be stolen and neither can the parts. You need fusion core energy to run, fast travel, and etc but you're still able to move even without fusion energy - albeit slower. A good rule to follow is to allow at least one fusion core in your inventory for fast travel purposes (since fast travelling with a fusion core doesn't cost any energy) and blow the rest as you see fit. I treat it as a buff only more readily available than chems. There is no "right time" to use the power armor and you will find more cores as you continue playing. I thought I was being fast and loose with my Power Armor usage and I am almost 90 hours in with over 30 fusion cores remaining.

Yes you can pickpocket and not get caught (if you you're fucked tho)

You can only use 1 companion and yes send Dogmeat (or whoever) to Sanctuary and yes its your (first) hub base. Its the one i used in my almost 100 hours.

Yes you always need cores for the power armor.

For good perks to start with, get bloody mess and mysterious stranger on the Luck column. If you didnt get enough luck to get those, put points into luck >_>

Actually,
they establish that it wouldnt be a good idea to be open about their tech because the few powers that be still in place are still freaking out about the last time new tech fucked them over (nuclear power) and they dont want to go down that road again. Dont get me wrong its not a good reason, and as far as I know the whole kidnapping people and replacing them shit is never explained or even acknowledged when you get to the Institute (unless I missed someone to talk to about it) but they do give that reason to be in the shadows. Also, Father is a dick. When he goes up to the surface in that quest he basically goes "yup this is a shithole we were right to stay hidden, fuck these people we are the 1%". The biggest crime is that you cant take over the institute and use it for what we, the player, perceive as good.

Yeah, you can pickpocket with no repercussions so long as you don't get caught (the window will close if you're caught). And you can only have one companion at a time, so in your example, when you take Codsworth you will get an option on where to send Dogmeat, or whoever is following you at that time. I don't think Power Armor *requires* a fusion core, but it is significantly weakened without one. Don't worry, though, you'll rarely run low. It can't be stolen but some people have had a little glitchiness with companions hopping in and refusing to get out every now and then.
 
Were the Brotherhood always this fascist or its just this particular branch with Maxson? I dont remember them being such dicks in 3. Its borderline cultish

not explained very well, but is there a way to view your outfits as your scrolling through them in pip boy ? or do you have to equip it, back out and check it that way ?

I know you can inspect each item, but can you see it on your character ? (ps4 version btw)

Probably just not playing it efficiently yet.

I played on Hard for my first playthrough. And it felt really rough the first couple hours. But on my next playthrough from the start on the same difficulty everything seemed just too easy. You just learn so many thing about how to play efficiently along the way.

Falllout 3 Brotherhood were out of character hippies. This version is more in line with FO1 and 2.

For pickpocketing you can negatively impct how your companion feels about your, depending on the companion.

One companion only.

You can move without the core in power armor but you are severly slowed and it's a lot less useful.

Not sure if it can be stolen. After twenty hours mine is still where I left it in sanctuary.

Minor spoiler but
all the factions are fascist! All are willing to use mass purges and exterminations for whatever they hold as the greater good. The BoS are just the most up front about it and don't pretend to be anything else.
 
After using Codsworth for a very long time, I've started travelling with Piper. ...Almost immediately she started walking off on her own. I followed her out of Diamond City, north across the river, then east for a good bit until she got wrecked by mirelurks and finally stopped. I kinda wish I'd taken out the mirelurks before they got to her so I could see where she'd end up. ...Anyways, I'm guessing that human companions aren't supposed to go do their own thing?
 
Is the quest for the Mutated Fern Flower for Solomon meant to be repeatable? It seems like it is, there's dialogue like I'm turning it in a 2nd time but no exchange is being made.


Also, be forewarned about putting power armor in settlements where neutral NPCs roam. I had one in a town that a travelling merchant visits, and some raiders respawned/ attacked the settlement. This led to the venerable roaming merchant Lucas Simms getting into my armor (it was a like 4th one so it didn't have anything too notable in it). And now he doesn't want to leave it. Normal settlers that belong to a town exit the armor, but now he seems to think it belongs to him.

They will sometimes, but it is meant to be in towns. Like Piper will often wander off to talk to random NPCs about her stories.

So here's something that sucks. Brotherhood of Steel and end game spoilers ahead

I guess Liberty Prime only comes into play if you do the BoS ending because I did those quests, built it etc, but then went Railroad and blew up the Prydwen and Liberty Prime was nowhere seen or mentioned. Bummed me out :/
