Guys, the game is on offer at Steam ($14,99) and I can't decide between getting it or not.
Never ever played the Fallout series, and I don't know so far how the gameplay is (watching some gameplay videos right now), so, could anyone here give a word about it, and if the so-much-talked bugs and glitches of the game have been corrected? Also, New Vegas or Fallout 3?
I always wanted to play it, I'll wait until tomorrow because it seems we'll have some Fallout-day tomorrow on Steam according to some posts I saw here at GAF.
I'm playing on 360 so someone else will probably have to chime in on the technical stuff for the PC version, but it's been running great for me throughout the 25 hours I've put into it.
These are big games, though, and bugs with the Gamebryo engine is just a given at this point. I think most of the major stuff has been fixed, but I don't know anyone makes it through these games without seeing something off. For example, the first building I entered in New Vegas had a bar and someone had warped inside the bar. Their head was sticking out of it lol. But like I said, other than a few small things like that, it's been fine.
The gameplay is hard for me to describe. At a glance, it moves like a first person shooter, and you can technically play it like one, but it's really not the best way to go about things. By pressing a button (right shoulder button on the 360 gamepad) you enter V.A.T.S. which freezes the action and lets you target specific body parts. It gives the game a nice tactical feel and results in some pretty satisfying kills.
Other than that, it's an open-world RPG. There are main quests, side quests, towns with vendors that you can buy ammo and health packs from, etc. It's all somewhat similar to Oblivion if you ever played that. You walk around on foot, though you can fast travel to locations that you've previously discovered.
Both games are worth playing, imo, because of the Fallout universe and the fantastic atmosphere and setting that it provides, but I actually prefer New Vegas. The writing is fantastic and there are so many interesting stories to be experienced through the various side quests. There's also a neat faction element to New Vegas with various groups vying for power in the Mojave wasteland. I've also heard that the replay value is pretty nice. I'm still on my first playthrough, but you can solve almost all the quests and deal with all of the factions in a multitude of ways.
