Fallout New Vegas |OT| Obsidian does what Bethesdon't

Just stealthily took out almost an entire Legion camp (holding NCR hostages) at night.

Instead of meeting up with the NCR captain and rushing in for an attack like directed, I found I recon the whole camp by creeping along a small mountain ledge overlooking the camp. Used my silenced night-vision Varmint rifle, and methodically took out everyone outside in the camp.

When I went back to the captain and told him I was "ready" to assault the camp, the attack turned out to be an amusing non-event. Only enemies left were inside 1 of the shacks - boss guy I believe.

It might sound boring to do so, but it was satisfying to me.

Finished OWB.

I was surprised at how quickly I was able to complete the main quest. I didn't really understand why I had to
kill Dr Mobious, given that he appears to have had altruistic reasons for keeping the Think Tank occupied.
I liked that there are still several locations to still visit, and some quests left untouched.

Now I'm at a crossroads: My speech, scientist, lockpicker, gun-specialist female build is approaching end game, and I'm thinking of abandoning her and starting a new. Thus last night I made a survivalist, energy weapons, speech (I love this skill) male build, and started my first 'hardcore' run. I'm thinking I may wait on going further with the latter until the last DLC is released.

You actually don't have to kill Dr Mobious in my playthrough, I left him alive and it touched on it at the ending.

Very.

Got the game a long time ago and recently really been into it. Been playing it a lot.

I had to free 3 slaves from a slaver village (well I wanted to). There were loads of ways to do that but I decided to stealth it. I waited for night time, told my companion to wait behind a rock and got my silenced pistol ready. A guard luckily walked by and I shot him quietly. I stole his outfit and went on in. One by one I took the slavers down. Got behind them and crushed them with my sledgehammer. Mainly because I ran out of silencer ammo (I now have a better silenced gun). To get the slave collar key I had to pickpocket the holder. He was in a room with 3 so I wanted to kill them at the end. I freed the slaves (later found out two had died later) and then called my companion to finish off the leader in his room.

I could've bought the slaves for full price, haggled them down, freed them the way I did or killed them and put them out of their misery.

Awesome.

I persuaded the slaves to make a run for it. It did not turn out very well for them. :p

Ah, Cottonwood Cove... Me and Boone just picked off the Legion sentries from afar, and then stormed in guns blazing. Wiped out every Legion son of a bitch in the place, freed the slaves, and then dumped radioactive barrels on the place for good measure.

Lonesome Road coming this month

Given that Old World Blues had quite a delay, there have been fears that Lonesome Road, the final Fallout: New Vegas add-on, would be delayed even further. However, Bethesda's Jason Bergman has confirmed that the DLC will be released this month:

"Good lord, you guys are paranoid.

It will be out in August. We delayed OWB because of the patch. We don't have that worry with LR.
Actual date will be announced soon (don't ask me when, I don't make those decisions)."

shoot the wings
use companions as meatshields unless you're playing in hardcore

Thinking of restarting, my SPECIAL stats are all around the place (forgot to dump some), everywhere I go I spot Cavadors, and now Legion Assassins started showing up. They are a pain even with Pulse Rifle.

To combat the legion Assassin's, fast travel to a NCR stronghold and wait there and as mentioned with the cazadores, shot them in the wing or just avoid them until you're strong enough

So, the earliest Lonesome Road can be out now is probably 23rd Aug. If it were planned for 16 Aug, there would have been an announcement and some info this week. The long wait continues...

BLOW THEM AWAY WITH A BIG GUN AND WATCH THEM MELT

So I've really been wanting to play this but the stuttering has become game breaking. I'm not that far into the game, but this recently started happening once I left the first town. Every time I walk on the ground outdoor my Framerate flips out between 15-45 FPS and my movement jerks forward like a slideshow. The only time it doesn't do this is when I jump. If I hop around it's a solid 60, but the moment I stop jumping and start normal walking it's back to the crazy framerate. I've tried the New Vegas Stutter Remover, among other things (iFPS tweak, lowering every available setting) to no avail. Verifying my Game cache didn't do anything either.

There's no reason I shouldn't be able to run this (I ran Oblivion and Fallout 3 just fine), so I imagine it's something to fix on my end. Any ideas, or should I just hop my way through the inevitable 100+ Hours of this game?

EDIT: Aha. Audio Hardware Acceleration was the culprit.

Like a boss.

Those are some of the more memorable moments from the game for me, just exploring and wrecking shit with Boone.

I played the shit out of the game via sidequests. Played like 60 hours. Got to Vegas. Played some black jack and never touch the game in half a year.

I really want to get back into it but I just feel overwhelmed. Anybody else in a similar boat? How long did it take to get back in the swing of things?

If I want to do this type of build, how should I set up my SPECIAL stats?

Sorry, I didn't see this earlier. I don't remember exactly what I started with, but I can tell you that I had high ST=8 (or maybe 9), EN=8 (or maybe 9), PE=5 to get to 6 after implants, AG=5 --> 6 with Small Frame ->7 with implants, LK=5 -> 6 with implants. I had to do this to get Slayer and Better Criticals.

Remaining points go to INT. CH is a dump stat, set it to 1.

LHK: Well, the new DLC is coming out next month, if you haven't played the DLCs, they're all good to excellent. And if you're on a PC, you can mod it for hours of more playtime. Just start again from the beginning if you have time and you feel overwhelmed, maybe try a new kind of build.

I did the same exact thing with Boone too and I had Rex with me to knock down enemies. I used a Sniper Rifle while crouching to kill most of them from far, then I got in close to mop up the rest of them up. I didn't see the radioactive barrels however. Caesar's Legion hates me now. I also went to the submerged houses that's nearby.

Deathclaws are a pain in the ass! How are you supposed to kill them? I used the Anabelle missile launcher that I got off a Nightkin during the Blackmountain side quest when you get Raul. I always use heavy firepower to kill them. Breaking into Quarry Junction to get the Deathclaw eggs for The Thorn side quest was a pain in the ass but it was worth it for the caps. Plus my guy got laid which was a nice bonus.

I use my scoped hunting rifle for pretty much everything. Switch to AP ammo for Legionary assassins and Deathclaws, use regular ammo on the rest.

I've got a trail carbine and a lever-action shotgun for dudes that get too close. I can kill pretty much anything. :lol

25% discount on all the DLCs on STEAM. Also 25% on the vanilla game.

It's going lower since today was quake and doom pack. A new deal every day means one day will be elder scrolls pack and some other day might be fallout pack. And now to my question :

If one could get all the DLC for 50% off each individually should I go for it? Is there a NV DLC that's not even worth the time?

A melee/unarmed build with high luck is amazing.

You also get a ton of money to buy great armor and weapons early.

I'm doing my first ever Fallout melee/unarmed build right now, and I love it!

I went with high 8's in strength, agility, and endurance, 6 in perception, 5 in luck, and 3 in intelligence and 2 in charisma. My tagged skills are melee, unarmed, and sneak.

All of them are completely worth it. The weakest would be Honest Hearts because it's not part of the DM-OWB-LR arc, but the area alone is worth the price of admission: M1911s, Tommy guns, an actual location with tons of xander root/broc flower, shitloads of herbs in general and a ton of useful crafting recipes.

Man, sniper build is so much fun, I love sniping tough enemies from incredible distances. 38hrs played since Monday, happy there are still great games like that!

I'm hoping for F3 GotY for 7.50, and 3 F:NV DLC for more than 50% off.

thanks a bunch will buy em all. Look forward to playing NV. I was harsh on the footage of the game when they showed it ( durr it looks just like F3 ) but I suspect that there's much more to this game than its visuals.

Definitely. The atmosphere and writing are both great. Seems like more side quests than FO 3 as well.

Just played vault 11 for the first time, utterly incredible. This game is really something special, probably my favourite game this generation.

I like you, like you a lot ;)

2nd favorite wouldn't be Demon's Souls would it?

Guys, the game is on offer at Steam ($14,99) and I can't decide between getting it or not.

Never ever played the Fallout series, and I don't know so far how the gameplay is (watching some gameplay videos right now), so, could anyone here give a word about it, and if the so-much-talked bugs and glitches of the game have been corrected? Also, New Vegas or Fallout 3?

I always wanted to play it, I'll wait until tomorrow because it seems we'll have some Fallout-day tomorrow on Steam according to some posts I saw here at GAF.

There's been a multitude of patches since the initial release. That's not to say it's completely glitchfree but most of the big ones were patched out awhile back.

If you have no prior experience with Fallout, I see no harm in just starting with New Vegas. The stories aren't really connected at all (besides the backstory of the war, etc) and mostly built on what made FO3 good.

If you care so much about bugs and glitches then don't buy them. They're open-world RPGs, they have bugs and glitches. You either let them ruin two of the best games of the past decade or you don't, simple as that really.

I'm playing on 360 so someone else will probably have to chime in on the technical stuff for the PC version, but it's been running great for me throughout the 25 hours I've put into it.

These are big games, though, and bugs with the Gamebryo engine is just a given at this point. I think most of the major stuff has been fixed, but I don't know anyone makes it through these games without seeing something off. For example, the first building I entered in New Vegas had a bar and someone had warped inside the bar. Their head was sticking out of it lol. But like I said, other than a few small things like that, it's been fine.

The gameplay is hard for me to describe. At a glance, it moves like a first person shooter, and you can technically play it like one, but it's really not the best way to go about things. By pressing a button (right shoulder button on the 360 gamepad) you enter V.A.T.S. which freezes the action and lets you target specific body parts. It gives the game a nice tactical feel and results in some pretty satisfying kills.

Other than that, it's an open-world RPG. There are main quests, side quests, towns with vendors that you can buy ammo and health packs from, etc. It's all somewhat similar to Oblivion if you ever played that. You walk around on foot, though you can fast travel to locations that you've previously discovered.

Both games are worth playing, imo, because of the Fallout universe and the fantastic atmosphere and setting that it provides, but I actually prefer New Vegas. The writing is fantastic and there are so many interesting stories to be experienced through the various side quests. There's also a neat faction element to New Vegas with various groups vying for power in the Mojave wasteland. I've also heard that the replay value is pretty nice. I'm still on my first playthrough, but you can solve almost all the quests and deal with all of the factions in a multitude of ways.

Don't buy New Vegas or any DLC until Sunday. Sunday is Fallout Day for the Quakecon Sale, and it might go down to 50% for all items.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
Finally getting back around to playing this again after I picked it up at launch, and I'm Hhving some trouble succesfully getting to Ranger Station Bravo to do the return to sender quest, my guy is level 12. I've been taking what I would have assumed would be the safest route just following the road east from the strip, but have been killed by deathclaws twice on the way now. Is there another way I should be going or...?

Thanks everyone for the great feedback about New Vegas, it will help me decide to get it or not.

You might as well start with F3 GotY, which should go sub-10$ tommorow. I played F3, now playing New Vegas. There are improvements, but I wouldn't say the difference is huge. F3 will help you get familiar with "Bethesda's" Fallout, and if you want more it will go again on sale during Thanksgiving (this time with last DLC as well, you might want to wait for it).

As for gameplay - it's open-world with lots of exposition. The world of Fallout is really rich, and IMO blows Elder Scrolls out of the water. You can play it as an FPS, or as people mentioned use targeting system. I play a mix of both and it works great. Note: even if you play it as an FPS, all the RPG elements (stats, weapon durability, etc.) are still present i.e. you cannot turn them off for RPG-lite experience.

Overall games are great, they give you that "just one more quest, one mroe location to find" feeling. They are not as stellar as F1/2, but those games were out during different era. After you play through F3/F:NV I reccommend you try F1/2.
