Introduction
Far Cry® 2, the next-generation first-person shooter from Ubisoft, will take you deep into the most beautiful but also most hostile environments in the world: Africa! More than just a visual and technological achievement, Far Cry® 2, the true sequel to the award-winning PC game, will provide you with an unprecedented gaming experience.

Caught between two rival factions in war-torn Africa, you are sent to take out "The Jackal," a mysterious character who has rekindled the conflict between the warlords, jeopardizing thousands of lives. In order to fulfil your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit your their weaknesses, and neutralize their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force.

Open World
The extensive artistic research combined with the next-gen engine will allow you to explore over 50Km2 of seamlessly rendered African landscape. No game has ever provided such freedom of movement!

Dunia Engine
The Dunia Engine was built specifically for Far Cry® 2 by the award-winning Ubisoft Montréal development team. It delivers the most realistic destructible environments, amazing special effects such as dynamic fire propagation and storm effects, real-time night-and-day cycle, dynamic music system, non-scripted enemy A.I. and so much more…

Real-Time Immersion
Real-time story telling, systemic auto-healing, minimal in-game interface are just few of the features that will make you feel the tension of being alone against barbarous warlords that threaten thousands of innocent lives.

Weapons of Choice
Choose from a wide range of weapons to make your way to your primary target. Meet the fight head-on with your machine-gun, go berserk with your machete or make stealth kills as a Sniper. If you feel that the atmosphere is not warm enough, light up your flamethrower and let your enemies and everything around them feel the heat.

Vehicles
Fly, Drive, Run, slide and hover over the huge open world with your glider, trucks, cars, boats and much more.

Gameplay will revolve around the player character's manhunt through a fictional region of Africa and will be entirely open-ended, with the player being able to ally with anyone he/she chooses. The player's choices are completely unfettered, giving a sandbox style of gameplay and allowing the story to progress at the speed the player chooses. Instead of using individual maps, the game will take place in a sprawling African landscape, with terrain ranging from savannah to jungle. The gameplay area will be 50 km2 (19.3 sq mi). Some members of the Ubisoft Montreal team spent two weeks in several locations in Africa filming and photographing native wildlife. The team will use the animal footage and environment photos to create an extremely realistic environment.

The player's actions may also have a lasting effect on the environment: for example, one of the missions shown so far by the developers had the player sabotage a pipeline owned by one of the factions that's pumping fresh water from a lake to a neighboring country, exchanging it for arms and munition. After the player destroys it, part of the surrounding area becomes flooded, including a mine where another mission may take place.

Various factions and vehicles will be featured; enemies will include human mercenaries, but sci-fi creatures such as the mutants from Far Cry will not be featured. Furthermore, the player's feral abilities introduced in Far Cry Instincts and its expansions will not be returning in Far Cry 2.

A dynamic weather system has been added that varies the weather based on the player's ability - if the player is doing exceptionally well the sky will be clear and sunny, but if problems arise the sky will become dark and stormy.

Bolded a couple interesting bits of information.

Multiplayer
Wikipedia said:
Multiplayer in Far Cry 2 attempts to include the dynamic elements of the singleplayer game (such as fire propagation) and to provide as accessible gameplay as possible so that it is available to all skill levels and so that players have specific gameplay aspects to keep in mind when designing their own maps in the map editor.

There can be up to twenty players per map, and the game will ship with fourteen developer-designed maps ranging from the slightly undersized to the modestly corpulent.

Modes

Four modes have been confirmed to be shipping with the game:

  • Deathmatch
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Capture the Diamond - a slight variation of the standard Capture the Flag
  • Uprising - Each team has a captain who must capture points across the map, with the assistance of his teammates. Once all points have been captured, the opposing captain must be assassinated to win the round.

Classes
Multiplayer gameplay is class based. Each class can choose an appropriate primary weapon and a side arm, as well as carry explosives such as frag grenades or Molotov cocktails. Players are able to unlock more powerful weapons within each class by spending up to three "blood diamonds" on a class; diamonds are earned through experience points gained by killing other players and completing objectives. Potential upgrades for individual weapons within a class include operation manuals, maintenance manuals, and bandoliers.

There are six classes:

  • Commando - "Mid-range assault class. Effective at fire-and-movement tactics."
  • Sharpshooter - "Long-range specialist. Armed with highly accurate weapons."
  • Guerrilla - "Short-range class. Specializes in close combat and ambush tactics."
  • Rebel - "Specialist in explosives and fire. Strong on offense or defense."
  • Gunner - "Heavy firepower specialist. Highly effective from static firing positions."
  • Saboteur - "Equipped with silenced weapons. Specializes in stealth tactics."

Map Editor
Wikipedia said:
Far Cry 2's map editor has been designed specifically for ease of use. It will include features present in almost all other map editors, such as easily raising/lowering terrain and applying textures, but is supposedly much easier to use than most similar programs. A video was shown showcasing the editor, including an Eiffel Tower made completely from in-game pieces.

The map editor will feature thousands of objects found in the single player game including vehicles, buildings, bridges and more. However, weapons cannot be placed on maps to support the game's class-based gameplay. The objects in the player made maps, such as buildings and structures are prefabricated from the game, making the map files smaller. This means that uploading and downloading maps will be quick and easy. It was announced at the GC 2008 that there will be a memory space limit for each map.

However, it only supports multiplayer maps.

Far Cry 2 at GameRankings.com

GamesRadar said:
With gameplay this organic and a world so rich and explorable, Far Cry 2 is a game you’ll live in. You’ll regularly play it until embarrassing o’clock in the morning, and then you’ll get up and shamelessly start all over again. And you’ll love every second.
PC Gamer UK said:
The basis of Far Cry 2’s story telling: Characters and situations are swapped via a software author, its responding to choices made by you the player. Its something that’s been on the cards for some time - mostly in research projects - but this is the first high-profile game to use it.
Its nothing less than a revelation. What makes this procedural storytelling cool isn’t that you get to play the game lots of times, and see new things happen, or do things in new ways, Its not even that it gives you stories to share, situations to compare with your friends. Its that the game just works and responds to your successes, failures and fuck ups.
If you don’t like what a guy is asking you to do, then don’t do it… If you really like one of your buddies, you stick with him. When the situations force choices on you… By God, its incredible
OPM said:
"Whatever happens you'll believe it's a real world and a fantastic setting for the action. It's not as dense or as varied as, say, Oblivion - you'll go somewhere, kill everyone, every mission - but it's utterly convincing and engrossing."
OXM UK said:
"Far Cry 2 is this year’s equivalent of Assassin’s Creed… when it comes to enveloping the player in exotic sights and sounds, Ubisoft has absolutely nailed it… What separates Far Cry 2 from other shooters of this ilk is that there really aren’t any rules to follow… The custom map feature makes Halo 3’s editor look like a joke."

Widescreen Fix is Out!

Thanks to Racer_S at WSGF for the Widescreen fix on Far Cry 2.

Note: This FOV Tool is in no way supported by Ubisoft, so use it at your own risk.

As of a week ago, I wasn't interested in this. But then I saw the trailer showing africa and it looks really cool. Looks more interesting than the same old sci-fi and ww2 shooters we're getting elsewhere.

I'm going to wait on this one; a lot of the things I've seen make me very skeptical about the quality of the AI, and seeing as the firefights are what will make or break this game, I'm not willing to spend my money on this kind of shooter now when Fallout 3 comes out a week later. If it turns out to be well received though, well, there's always the summer drought of games next year to pick this up on the cheap--will fit nicely with the setting too. :D

Though there are no feral power *squee*, I will get this day one.

There'd better be a map editor. I rock at making maps. AND THERE IS A MAP EDITOR WOOT.

For some reason I'm vaguely interested in Far Cry 2...I'd definitely like to play it but I don't think I'll be able to fit it in my play schedule. Maybe I'll rent it sometime.

Looking forward to it, even though I fear that playing CW has dampened my enthusiasm for this game a bit. That screenshots comparison thread from a week ago or so certainly didn't help.

That said, I hope it's different enough (like BiA: HH) so too many comparisons won't come up.

Finally an OT!!! GAF, WHERE IS THE HYPE!!! This game is going to rock.
You watch, couple days before release date, the hype will be perpetuated by broken streets dates and such. EXCITING!!!!

I'm on the fence with this one.

AI looked poor in all the videos I've watched, plus I'm not sure about their "immersion" gameplay features such as having to pull bullets out of your body and crap. That stuff sounds like it'd get old quickly.

*Many of the Screens/Videos I've posted are from the PC version, but it should be noted that all three versions of the game are amazing looking.

What? Most of the videos were Xbox 360...

Some more new trailers from my failed thread a few days ago (the Villains one is amazing), all from 360 version:

No More Heroes Trailer (from last week)

Small Detour (Off Screen)

Ranch Assault (Off Screen)

No More Health (Off Screen)

Rail Yard Assault (Off Screen)

Also, first reviews are in:

OXM UK = 9/10
PC Gamer UK = 94%

Thanks, updated the videos section :)
(Already had those reviews posted at the bottom :p)

Yeah, my bad, its just the screens.

godhandiscen

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Can I get the PC CE at Gamestop? They haven't tried to sell me one during my last visits so I assumed there wasn't one.

Too bad it's coming out the same day as Fable 2.

Will probably have to come back and pick this up early next year if reviews/GAF impressions are good. Just don't have enough time for it now.

So on the 24th Euro is getting FarCry 2, Fable 2, LittleBigPlanet and maybe Bioshock. :lol

I'd love to grab this day 1, but money is scarce. :(

Ok, since there's a whole lot of splooging going on in this thread, I'll provide my traditional pessimistic look at this game

-When I played it at PAX, the AI was absolute shit. This does not seem to have changed with every further preview I read, hands-on I read, and video I see.

-"Immersive" aspects tend to get more annoying than anything.

-Those two reviews for this game mean nothing - Ubisoft did the same thing with Assassin's Creed, allowing immensely positive prerelease reviews to break embargo.

I hope the game's awesome, it shows a ton of potential, but I'm not buying it until I confident with a couple weeks of reviews and gameplay impressions that my worries are bogus.

Damn, I want the tangible copy, but I can get it for 44.99 on Steam. How long do you think the sale will last?

Gaf, convince me to download this instead of going to the store and buying it.

It's a pretty fucking good feeling knowing how convient it is to just sit and wait....and then that's it. No wasted gas, game is already paid for, etc.

Cool. I'm convinced. *goes to add CC number*

I think the game has been looking great. My two main complaints are the weird dust filter they have and the release date. I might just pick this game up on PC and wait on it until there is a slow period.

Oh my god the map editor shits all over anything released on consoles so far. It rivals PC editors!

How many players can this game support online? Because you can totally make huge battlefield 2 type maps!

Day one ! I just hope they have wide variety of missions 'cos it will fail if it's only "go to point a and kill people and then return."

I'll probably not bother getting this until after christmas, since it's coming at like the worst time ever for games.
