That's fine, but what are you suggesting he does instead? Seems like a lose-lose to me. If there's nothing to it this letter will have done serious harm to his career.

Serious harm has already been done to his career, incase you missed the whole DoJ filing and Podesta email. This idea you have that Comey is actually a smart person and there must be some deep dark secret he discovered is fucking hilarious. He fucked up, end of story.

I honestly have no idea why Hillary's emails are something that I should care about.

You see, there were these classified emails on this private server.

Classified. Nobody knows what was in them, but they were classified.

And they could have been hacked. Nobody knows if they were, but they could have been.

Lock 'er up.

I don't think this will have the same effect as the last time, but the fact this will actually affect the polls this close to the election would have been terrifying if the republicans had a decent candidate. Luckily, they have Trump.

Oh, but I thought the last time this was in the public eye it made no difference at all!

Facts. Pesky things.

Edit- I should add that I don't think this will be enough to flip the election. Just saying that this will likely have an effect.

If Comey can be as specific as you are here, why wasn't he? I'm not going to try and pretend know what Comey can and can't say regarding this investigation, which is why I don't exactly condemn him for being vague. By most accounts, Comey was a consummate professional and was the least partisan person according to most Democrats. Coming out of no where to sabotage Clinton -- in what would be an OBVIOUS attempt at sabotage -- makes absolutely no sense.

Sure this is a last ditch attempt to save some house or senate seats.

I mean, it really didn't have a major effect the last time. I think she saw some drops, but she didn't really tank. Hell, this time it's not even about her. There was the initial headlines, but once it's out there that this is a bunch of nothing, it'll just fade into the background with all the Wikileaks e-mail stuff we've had this month.

This is actually a pretty good time overall for this to happen, though. That may sound weird to say, but early voting is underway, and she has a fairly demanding lead. It would take a tanking of Trump-like levels for it to swing the election one way or the other at this point, and I don't think this would do that regardless of the situation. The problem with it is that that they have exhausted the e-mail angle, and now they've created a situation like Benghazi, just preaching to the choir, with a lot of people confused more than anything about what it was all about.

Were these emails of anything of note or were they determined to be fluff? 26 pages doesn't tell me if this is a justified freak out or a GAF freak out.

Again, where did I say illegal?

You responded to my initial statement that said she admitted she made a mistake, but that multiple inquiries and investigations concluded she did nothing illegal. You then posted a politfact link for... no reason whatsoever? Because the link only confirms what I already told you.

Were these emails of anything of note or were they determined to be fluff? 26 pages doesn't tell me if this is a justified freak out or a GAF freak out.
Signs point to GAF freak out. Nothing substantial. News media slow to course-correct.

I'm pretty sure it was Republicans who said that, prior to his press conference at least, at which point he was suddenly an incompetent stooge in the bag for Hillary.

Why would a "pro's pro" of federal prosecutors torpedo his career? To get Donald Fucking Trump into the White House? Not buying it, not even remotely.

This isn't his first rodeo. He took excruciating pains to make the initial investigation not turn into a political circus and he's going to start lobbing bombs 2 weeks from the election?

He did no such thing.

The press conference he held was the definition of political circus

From what I understand, the content of her emails was never the problem. Rather, it was her lax email security that has caused so much consternation.

And speaking of "hand wringing", I love all of the so called independents jumping in the thread to chastise Hillary and people who are voting for her.

Are you the undecided? Like you can't decide between a fucking idiot, racist, sexist, piece of worthless shit and someone who can actually run the country? If you are undecided, you just don't care or are ignorant.

Are you the middle ground type? Like you have to tell everyone how wrong they are? Even when one side is supporting kicking Muslims out of the country? Even why one side considers Mexicans rapists and criminals? Even why one side thinks all lives matter but never stands up when black lives are threatened? If you are the middle ground type you aren't as smart as you think you are.

I got laughed out the thread when I suggested this story moving the polls 2 points tighter was a big deal.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Is Hillary the least awful candidate? Sure. Does that make her fit for public office? No. And it definitely doesn't mean corrupt practices should be swept under the rug.

Well you're right that being the least awful candidate doesn't mean someone is fit for office. Thankfully, she's not "awful" by any stretch and pretty damn fit for this office given her experience.

Somewhere in between, likely.

Don't really know how many emails we're talking about here... Apparently, anywhere from 3 to thousands.

Then there's the question of the content of these emails. If it will indeed take longer than 2 weeks to go through, as the FBI has suggested, I would assume there are quite a few.

I got laughed out the thread when I suggested this story moving the polls 2 points tighter was a big deal.

People also laughed me out of the PoliGAF thread for saying that her 'basket of deplorables' gaffee would hurt her.

Just roll with it. There is precedence for this email issue affecting her public perception, and there's data to prove it.

I don't think anyone can make a comment on the FBIs motivation or if it wa S politically motivated until we know what was discovered

For the people claiming it's politically motivated since its 11 days before the election

What would people think about the FBI if they withheld until after the election and it turns out bad?

In other words the FBI is damned if they do and possiblly damned if they don't

In terms of actual news, there isn't shit so far. Comey was required to inform congress that his testimony had to be amended due to a device recovered during a different investigation into Weinerboy. Likely because of connection to Huma, it became a relevant device to the Clinton inquiry.

The only possible thing I could ever see coming out of this is correspondence between Huma and Weiner or someone else possibly conflicting with Huma's given testimony during the Clinton inquiry. But I think more would have moved after Comey's statement to congress had anything actually been discovered here.

This thread being so many pages long is dogs barking at thunder.

You actually think that's happening, THIS story, with some in the media(and Comey) already looking like they got egg all over their faces immediately trying to make this a potentially scandalous bombshell?

Were these emails of anything of note or were they determined to be fluff? 26 pages doesn't tell me if this is a justified freak out or a GAF freak out.

A source told a Fox reporter that the FBI has been looking at 4 Weiner devices and they've found no classified information so far in the related emails on those devices.

You are preaching to the converted. People on GAF seem generally clued up on the ins and outs of this story.

Most people will be hearing "FBI Clinton E-mails".

I don't have much faith in people, I dunno, Trump already has more than a third of the vote in his palm after all. I'm not saying it's a certainty but I think it's possible.

When does the truth actually matter?

Barring another major story, this is what the talking heads will discuss all weekend, across all major networks.

Again, not likely it sways anything to his favor. But it's bad coverage at a time she was just looking to ride the calendar out.

Shit, I hear you, but 2 points? I'm skeptical about that, especially this late in the game.

People aren't claiming it was politically motivated because the FBI made a statement. They are claiming it was politically motivated because the FBI made a VAGUE statement without any detail and provided that vague statement to GOP members who have a hate boner for Clinton.

Just check out Podesta's response to this. They WANT Comey to release all the information they have at this point in time because they believe that failing to provide this information is what's wrong with the entire situation.

I'm not so sure he had a choice. He didn't want to appear as though he held back information. He knows Republicans well, it would be over the coals for him. He could have waited a few days and things could have even been worse. He went ahead now.

I think the issue is how he handled this. Vague statement that let imaginations go wild. He should have seen how this would play out and been more forthcoming.

Dumb question I'm having trouble finding an answer for: were Clinton's emails ever hacked? I have people telling me that happened, but I don't recall this at all. Am I crazy?

Thank you! God! People are freaking out on both sides, this is literally nothing. This is a fucking memo notifying the Congress that he is amending his testimony.

I pretty much think everyone has already made up their minds on who they are going to vote for at this point. I don't see this or that Trump video really changing anything now.

Riding out the calendar??? She had a speech with Freaking Goddess Michelle.

I think the "politically motivated" claim comes from how it was handled. No one (that I've seen) is saying that the FBI shouldn't investigate these new emails. However, by issuing such a vague press release, they stoked the opposition's flames, which could definitely be interpreted as an anti-democrat political move.

As the saying goes, “Never attribute to malice that which can be attributed to stupidity." There's a better chance that this was just handled poorly by the FBI but, you know, people love conspiracy theories.

Dumb question I'm having trouble finding an answer for: were Clinton's emails ever hacked? I have people telling me that happened, but I don't recall this at all. Am I crazy?

No... I don't think so. There is a ton of confusion between her email stuff and the DNC leaks which were hacks.

People have been hearing "FBI Clinton emails" for months now. Trump and Fox News have tried (and failed) to make it stick in any meaningful way, and it hasnt. All it does is reinforce the narrative for the tin foil hat idiots who think she's crooked and weren't going to vote for her anyway. We are a week and a half out from Election Day. We are long past the point of "perception" and "optics" mattering. Anything that doesn't make it more likely that Trump wins is meaningless at this point, and this new "scandal" absolutely does nothing to make a Trump win more likely, therefore it might as well be nothing.

Yes that's a very valid point

No.
The DNC was hacked by groups linked to the Kremlin.

Riding out the calendar??? She had a speech with Freaking Goddess Michelle.

Never said she was going to lounge at home, but she was going to stay under the radar and quietly coalesce her ground game and thoroughly win an election.

Still likely going to happen. But she may have to be on the defensive for a few days.
