FBI reviewing emails found on devices used by Weiner/Abedin

I've no idea whats going on with all the different reports. Best I can make out is was 3 emails were sent by Huma to Weiner that were from the private server but weren't disclosed

This is what I'm trying to figure out. NY Times article states that a federal oifficial says its "thousands."

If it's 3 dumb Weiner emails. Big whoop. If it's thousands, kind of a big deal (of course, the contents are the bigger deal).

The bureau told Congress on Friday that it had uncovered new emails related to the Clinton case — one federal official said they numbered in the thousands — potentially reigniting an issue that has weighed on the presidential campaign and offering a lifeline to Donald J. Trump less than two weeks before the election.

I am left with 2 options:

1. The FBI is full of fucking idiots and the biggest one is piloting the ship.

2. The FBI are purposely trying to get Trump votes.

I don't see any other believable option.

mwahahaaa

Well that's true. But what's the protocol? Can he SAY in a letter to Congress (that will make its way to the media) that it's about Weiner?

He had no problems tying it to "Clintons private email server" in his statement despite the fact it sounds like it has nothing to do with that private email server, so...yeah? It would be a hell of a lot more accurate than what he actually wrote.

probably comey himself, not "The FBI" as an agency. Comey made the call about when and how to deliver this information, and it's tough to see how someone could fuck it up worse without being intentional about it.

So nothing has been "reopened" as far as the investigation into Hilary goes by the FBI right? Pretty funny as how that is how the RNC and Trump are spinning this to be.

Is it three emails? Do we know for certain?

The times story says 'thousands'.

Conflicting info. Times says it's "possibly" thousands, but that Newsweek guy (and maybe other reporters) are saying that it's specifically three.

Hard to see how thousands of emails on Weiner's or Huma's phones are related to the investigation, unless they stored thousands of Hillary's personal emails there, or talked about classified information there. But that would be separate from Hillary's investigation and it would be on Huma and Weiner, not HIllary.

Most likely, they are going to have to go through thousands of emails just to make sure, but only a handful of them are relevant.

And that might even be a too generous description: relevant.

Fucking thank you.

When you all quit doing it, I'll quit saying it.

Seriously, it's like clockwork. Any remotely negative story, a lot of you come out of the woodwork to panic and fear monger as much as possible. You guys, and like 75% of the people who posted in this thread, all sure are absent whenever things are going good and it's almost entirely a positive run of events for Clinton, but boy, one potentially bad story and it's la fin du temps. It'd be one thing if it had any root in reality, but most of the time it's so tone deaf to the situation at hand it's hard not to point out since it's so blatantly obvious.

Where did you see "possibly" in the article?

The F.B.I. is investigating illicit text messages that Mr. Weiner sent to a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina. The bureau told Congress on Friday that it had uncovered new emails related to the Clinton case — one federal official said they numbered in the thousands — potentially reigniting an issue that has weighed on the presidential campaign and offering a lifeline to Donald J. Trump less than two weeks before the election.

Mr. Comey said the F.B.I. was taking steps to “determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation.” He said he did not know how long it would take to review the emails, or whether the new information was significant.

We just don't know if they're relevant.

I do not get this.
You can have a bloody murder weapon next to a dvd of you murdering someone on your desk, but if the cops did not have a warrant it is thrown out but random hacked emails put on the web, a felony in and of itself can be used freely?

I agree. The timing is suspect. This could easily have waited 11 days.

I think that part was out of his hands, since he had to update his testimony when he found new information.

The wording is all on him though. He could have just said something like "We found 3 new emails from an unrelated source and do not currently have reason to believe that our previous decision will change." That would have been both accurate and clear.

What would you have said in the letter? Like what.....EXACTLY? Knowing that the letter would be seen by the media.

Enlighten us.

See above. It's not fucking hard.

That letter was to Congress, not the media.

Which was actually worse, because it let Chaffetz invent whatever story he wanted to before it made its way to the media. If this had made it to the media first they might have actually asked some followup questions.

I've calmed down a bit. Comey is a real piece of work though. I have trouble believing his statements (or their deliberate vagueness) aren't politically motivated, like when he cleared Clinton earlier in the year but had to toss those "extreme carelessness" comments in there to feed the Republican base.

Psst I've been posting on political threads for years now, and I've never once said that Clinton is going to lose the election.

Apparently, you think that she's infallible and immune to negative press... When you're presented with actual facts to refute your incorrect beliefs, you ignore it. The only one going off the deep end here is you.

So basically if this is thousands of emails, this could potentially drag all the way through the election without any sort of conclusion delivered until afterwards.

Being no huge fan of Clinton, I still have to say that something stinks.

Conspiracy time: Was Comey pressured? Do "they" have something on him? If this is nothing big, is his career over?

Bedwetting has always been commonplace in gaf politics threads

I'm guessing you weren't here in 2012 because any time Romney won a state on election night the forum collectively shat themselves

Pretty quick, but I saw before the edit, and none of what you said was remotely correct, so it's good I don't have to address it since no one cares about your worthless anecdotal evidence and I'm far from 'delusional' about Hillary or her chances. Plus, you know I'm right with what I am saying anyway. I don't really care why you guys do it. Maybe you are just addicted to that feeling of panic or just totally complacent during the good times, I don't know, but you guys know what you're doing, at least I think most of you do.

They're rightfully pissed.

Lol, damn.
