Yeah, I enjoyed the Cena interview.

He seems self-aware and really grounded. Nice to see him call himself a company guy. At least, he isn't naive

I'm reading David Shoemaker's book, The Squared Circle: Life, Death, and Professional Wrestling now. The essays about the wrestlers just feel too short; it always feels like that they end just when they get interesting. The longer sections about the early history of professional wrestling in the US have more meat, but it still feels strangely slight.

The book is mostly repeats of his Grantland articles. They're good but like you said not enough is written about his subjects.

Old news? http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/wwes-raw-smackdown-could-find-new-homes-as-negotiating-window-with-nbcu-expires-1201110680/

WWE and NBCUniversal have stepped away from the negotiating table without a new licensing deal for “Monday Night Raw” and “Friday Night SmackDown” that air on the USA and Syfy networks through October.

“WWE’s exclusive negotiating period with NBCU for our flagship television programs, ‘Raw’ and ‘SmackDown,’ has now expired,” WWE said in a statement. The exclusive window was available to NBCU through Feb. 15, giving the company the opportunity to accept or reject WWE’s final offer.

“While we were unable to reach an agreement with NBCU during this period, we have certainly appreciated our long and productive partnership. With year-round, live programming that is highly coveted by programmers, distributors and advertisers, we are extremely excited about our future. We look forward to engaging with potential partners who recognize the value of having the #1 show on cable and live content delivered 52 weeks a year.”

WWE will now start negotiating with other companies, although a new deal with NBCU could still be brokered once it sees what other networks are willing to pay. WWE is considering multiple plans for its shows: airing them all with a single family of networks or splitting them up across multiple network owners.

Either way, the company is looking to significantly increase the $139.5 million in TV licensing fees WWE earns each year for its shows, and attempt to get closer to the rich network deals that sports organizations like the NBA, NHL NASCAR, as well as soccer command.

More at the link.

No one is going to give them legit sports money.

Damn, this will be interesting.

Can see WWE possibly shooting themselves in the foot and get low-balled by competitors before NBC come back with a reduced offer just to beat the others. I keep reading they're solid ratings getters as it's fairly consistent, but not huge for advertisers.

Fox and Fox Sports will not be seriously bidding. It's ridiculous if anyone thinks it will air on there. Just crazy brah. Nowherre to go.

I love How Cessaro made Cena look small without being a HGH'ed up Stay Puff Marshmellow man.

I also love how WWE made sure they never shot the match to really display the size disparity between Cena and Cesaro.

They sorta did the same thing with Rock and Cena when they had their first staredown.

you could tell Cena liked Cesaro since a while ago

he always had those tag matches against him/real americans and they always teased the swing

really great match last night, lived up to the hype of both those guys

huge cezzy mark but i ain't even mad he lost, looked good

Why though?

you could tell dude was strong and had a great move set

when he debuted too they made him look strong by neutralizing khali

he immediately came in and won the US championship, held it for a while, and his US championship flag waiving gimmick was fantastic. "i don't hate america, it's the land of opportunity! i hate americans!" "see americans? This is how you use the stairs. one foot up etc" he started to get his own heat but they made him drop the gimmick cause Zeb came in to pull Swagger out of oblivion. Then Cezzy joins Zeb because he was wayyy better at real american and then they found themselves as a tag team, things just clicked, and now here we are.

i also get the inkling that anybody who lifts is good in Cena's books
You have to give it to Cesaro for hanging in there with Cena for so long.
Cena Jr really did hold his own but he couldn't neutralize the threat in time so he had his attitude adjusted

also lol Cesaro going out of the AA into a flip landing, daniel bryan tried the same thing at SummerSlam and messed it up

WWE has no other suitors except for NBC. Maybe fox, but it seems nonoe has come out and said anything.

They have no leverage.

also the new humble bundle is pretty great

So what the fuck is happening with the TV deal, exactly? Why does Vince expect a larger deal than before even though ratings have been declining over the last 10 years?

All Meltzer is saying is I DON'T KNOW or he hasn't heard any chatter/rumors. weird.

Vince wants to double the rights based on the $$$ other live sports are getting . Ratings have stagnated.

meanwhile No one has put a bid up. NBC can basically do what they want unless vince has an ace in the hole.

Cesaro's US title reign was great for a while when he was Swiss Deathing fools into oblivion, before he started becoming a jobber to the stars, except with a title.

I guess you could guess that it shows how far removed Vince McMahon is from reality in regards to perception towards the WWE. It makes a shit ton of money, but people don't seem to find it any more entertaining than it was 10 years ago.

The ratings are still good and because TV itself has changed -drastically- over the last 10 years. Theres a larger impetus for "DVR-proof" programming which RAW largely is. One of the best things they've done is to make the shows an event akin to a real sporting event.

TV rights deals for sports has gone through the roof astronomically lately. WWE thinks they can get a piece of that pie, I do too but its not going to be with NBC Universal.

I think they end up doubling what they're getting right now for their TV rights.

Whoos going to give them the money. UFC has been a failure on fox ratings wise. cant see them going to WWE.

Spike still hates Vince for leaving them the first time.(In FAct Spike was te reason they got a lower deal from NBC.)

Turner is not getting back in the business.

not a lot of options.

they will be on Axs tv as a lead into BADMMA
