Well, I tried...but I absolutely hated all of it. I guess it'll never work out for me. Also, the singer looks like a dog of some sort. Not that that matters. He's some...dog thing.

Folk is a very broad category. It's okay to hate Mumford (although I like some of their stuff) or the Lumineers, but saying you hate any entire genre is kind of like saying, I hate that rap stuff, because you're not a fan of 2 Chainz or P Diddy. Like good hip hop, folk is a lot about what the artist has to say, not just which beat they're pumping. And folk singers have had a lot of interesting shit to say, when other genres were keeping their mouths shut. There's a long history of folk singers getting blacklisted and tossed off shows because they wouldn't shut up and play nice.

Honestly, in a literal sense, hip hop is a kind of folk music, because it came from the people, not the music industry. It was bottom up, not top down music, which is what folk is meant to be. It's meant to tell the stories of the people, and the struggles they go through.

I wouldn't say all indie is folk, but a lot of indie is really just folk rock with a cooler label. So I wouldn't say the Flaming Lips are folk, really. That's not where they came from, but NMH certainly is. I mean, they play the saw as an instrument all through the album. To be fair, I also limited myself to bands listed as neofolk. I like all sorts of folk, too, from bluegrass folk to anti-folk (which is really just folk informed by punk sensibilities). Every since Dylan plugged in his electric guitar at The Newport Folk Festival, folk's been seeping its way into rock music.
