Feel good about Microsoft first party after E3?

Absolutely. I only bought an Xbox One for exclusives (PS4 is my primary/mutiplat system) and until this e3 and a few months prior to it, Halo 5 was the only thing I was looking forward to on the system. With the exception of Killer Instinct, the launch exclusives were poor for me so I really needed a reason to get excited about buying something to play on my Xbox One.

A better look at Sunset Overdrive has it as one of my most anticipated games for the year and even though Microsoft disappointed me by not showing more of Halo 5 and Killer Instinct season 2, I thought this E3 showed me that they'd have a better variety of exclusives than they did with the 360. If Microsoft can get anywhere close to Sony's quality and variety of exclusives, dual console owners like myself are in for a fantastic generation.

To me, exclusives are exclusives whether first party or not so yes, I'm very pleased. Many solid looking games coming out to the Xbox One this year and next year and with a ton of variety. Forza Horizon 2, Ori, Dance Central Spotilight, Sunset Overdrive, Master Chief Collection, Quantum Break, etc.

Got the Xbox One first over the PS4 last year due to the system having more exclusives that I was interested in and that's continuing to be true. I would be really bummed out if I didn't have an Xbox One.

I'm sure this wouldn't be that rough lol. It's not like we're seeing our Gears of War or Uncharted 2 of the generation yet.. There will be better exclusives on both platforms in the future

Clearly. So you either didn't read the rest of my post or just chose to conveniently ignore it. Instead of continuing to spout bullshit, maybe you should go and check some reviews for Phantom Dust or see how often it appears on lists of the best Xbox games and Xbox's hidden gems.

Why bother with someone who is saying that because a game didn't get released in Europe must be crap? it's funny because he says he wants new IP's and new ideas but he isn't even interested or curious about Phantom Dust.

Yeah, I am hoping MS decides to have a big presence at Gamescom and TGS. Hopefully they reveal one or two unannounced games to keep some positive news going into the holiday season.

AFAIK MS hasn't said much about their Gamescom plans besides that Quantum Break will be there, hopefully that's a sign that MS's presence will be stronger in Gamescom this year.

Not at all. They had a good conference, but at this point they are pandering to their core userbase rather than trying to attract people that have simply gotten tired of Gears, Fable, Halo, and Forza.

PS4 is my primary console due to the better exclusives, superior hardware and value, but I was using this year's E3 to decide what my next secondary console is. I'm pretty confident it will be the Wii U which I will grab when Zelda comes out next year. It already has a decent lineup of exclusives that compliment what the PS4 offers quite well, and Zelda looks too amazing to pass up.

I'm not seeing that "must have" game on the Xbox One yet. There's a lot of decent mid-tier titles, but announcements of Phantom Dust and Crackdown do nothing for me as I was never a fan. I'm a little surprised they're even deciding to bring them back, honestly. And as much as I think Phil Spencer is a big improvement, he's made some decisions so far that don't give me a lot of faith in him as a leader. I was excited about Black Tusk's new IP, but now they are a Gears factory.

So we'll see. Right now, they've revealed a huge portion of their cards for 2015 and 2016, and I don't see anything that's convincing me to pick up their platform anytime soon.

I'm pretty excited, and I'm definitely looking forward to their future. Hopefully they announce some good shit at Gamescon/TGS/VGX and the months in between them.

Not that I recall of.

I remember Undead Labs popping up in the news 3 times this year for:

Jan - signed multi-game deal with MS for consoles and PC.
Feb - Lifeline DLC announced.
May/June - Lifeline released/Undead says they won't be at E3.

I believe I've read sonewhere that they should be announcing something later this year, and not their zombie MMO either. A State of Decay Xbox One port would make a lot of sense, at the very least.

Agreed. But not necessarily with the PS4 straight up having battery exclusives because none of them have been released yet.. I can say that going off of history and knowing the strength of their 1st party, the PS4 will end up with better, unique exclusives unless Microsoft properly invests in this ares. For the time being, Xbox One probably has the edge, but I honestly I don't think it has any game worth owning the console for other than the master chief collection because of its tremendous value and multi-player, which will be a hit. Sunset could be one based off all the positive impressions, but it's going to be hard for Insomniac to top what they did with Ratchet and Clank:ACiT, their best exclusive ever created and arguably worth owning a PS3 for. By comparison Tools of Destruction was solid, but not worth owning a PS3 for. I think with Sunset the co-op could take it over the top.

Dude of course you don't see or will see anything that will make you buy an Xbone in the future since you are already convinced that the PS4 has the better exclusives, you are so biased that it's getting funny trying to play the "I'm interested but we'll see" card.

Any idea what LXP and Platform Next are doing?

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/23/microsoft-hiring-for-leap-and-platform-next-game-studios/

LEAP : some sort of incubation team, so probably a small indie-game.
Platform Next : Kinect stuff.

I believe I've read sonewhere that they should be announcing something later this year, and not their zombie MMO either. A State of Decay Xbox One port would make a lot of sense, at the very least.

https://twitter.com/undeadlabs/statuses/423457825768349696

I've heard that too, but I think they were simply referring to State of Decay DLC.

The game I want most is one of the least talked about, Fable Legends.

I think there will be a few games I get from microsoft this year. I'm excited.

I'm sure this wouldn't be that rough lol. It's not like we're seeing our Gears of War or Uncharted 2 of the generation yet.. There will be better exclusives on both platforms in the future

I'm just speaking for myself. I loved Jet Grind Radio and Sunset Overdrive reminds me a lot of that game and I would definitely be bummed out if I couldn't play it.

On paper? Sure, but most of those were just CGi trailers about games that don't seem past the pre production phase, so i'm not getting my excitment up just yet.

A bigger problem for me is long life support of the platform, though.

When i'll buy a PS4, i'll do it for games already released, but also with the notion (and expectation) of a steady and long lasting suppot of the first party studios, with exclusives i'm not able to get anywhere else, this expectation is fueled by the arc the PS3 had, compared to the 360.
So when it comes to the XBone, i'm afraid to see, again, a good support early on, and a complete abandon to 3rd parties later on in the cycle, which is what makes me much less confident to invest in one as of right now, and the reason why, even though they've got some good titles on paper, it's going to be the third one i'm going to get, most likely.

The game I want most is one of the least talked about, Fable Legends.

I think there will be a few games I get from microsoft this year. I'm excited.

But haven't past fable games sucked? Or haven't they been just underwhelming? And even they were solid , if I were an Xbox owner I'd be anticipating Witcher 3 has my big rpg because it's probably going to be the better game. The same thing may apply to killer instinct whenever the next street fighter or mortal combat comes out, and those are both multiplatform.

I hope people see why making all these exclusive lists sometimes is silly. It's like if this is last gen and people did their lists putting Ninja Blade on it as a reason to own the Xbox 360. While it may have been a decent game to many, who the fuck cares when God of War 3 was going to be the significantly better game anyways? (and it was by far). This is why games like Sunset and the MCC are very important for the Xbox One. They are going to offer experiences that you won't get from other platforms for the time being and have very capable studios behind them.

I hope Microsoft keeps examining new unique exclusives. I want them to do Sony did last gen in terms of partnering or 1st party studio development. Am I going to get stuff at the same quality or at least having as much potential/ambition as Heavy Rain or Modnation Racers or how about Starhawk?

Seeing a lot of people saying that they are concerned that MS will stop making unique core exclusive games for the Xbox One like they did late last gen but yet, a big reason why they did that last gen was because the Xbox 360 had such great third party support and deals. While the Xbox One will continue having great third party support, all signs are pointing to it not being as dominant in that area as its predecessor, therefore it seems like MS knows that they have to do better in that area than they did last gen. On top of this, part of the reason why there weren't that many unique core exclusive retail games during the second half of the Xbox 360's life was due to kinect. Kinect was a new device back then and games were being made for it. Now though, kinect isn't new anymore.

So overall I would say that all signs are pointing to the Xbox One having a more diverse exclusive core gaming lineup than the Xbox 360 had but we'll see what happens as these years go by.

If you were anticipating every promise that Molyneux made then sure, they sucked. But if you ignored everything he said and took the games themselves at face value then they were fun little RPGs. I enjoyed all three and the DLC for them quite a bit. The combat was a little on the simple side, but engaging. The stories were mostly fun. You could do a shit load of things and I loved buying up every piece of property. So yeah, ignoring outside nonsense, they were good games on their own merits, imo.

I was quite looking forward to a new Fable game. Unfortunately, Fable Legends looks like total garbage and not at all like the previous games. Ugh, multiplayer nonsense. I want my big, grand single player RPG experience.

Only thing that interest me from what they have is Quantum Break (just like last gen the only interesting thing they had was Alan Wake). I have a very diverse taste for games but Halo and Gears don't please me at all (and I gave each more than one chance to win me over). Halo anniversary is a strong candidate for the most boring and repetitive game I ever played.

There was new first party stuff?

I only saw the tired Halo, Forza, Fable and Gears

Their other exclusives are not that hot except for that Platinum game..

Will probably buy a xbone for that game but being a ps4 owner that dont like Halo, Forza, Fable and Gears it is hard to justify buying the console since : third party games on ps4 >>> third party games on xbone

Yes, sorry, that's what I meant. Based on the current lineup combined with future titles, I'm liking Sony's lineup more, and they have a ton of studios that are confirmed to be working on new IP that haven't shown anything yet. Whereas I feel Microsoft has pretty much shown the vast majority of their cards. Last gen the PS3 also showed that Sony isn't afraid of delivering new IP mixed with fan favorite sequels throughout the gen. 360 left a sour taste in my mouth the last few years it was on the market. There were hardly any noteworthy exciting exclusives at all.

Dude of course you don't see or will see anything that will make you buy an Xbone in the future since you are already convinced that the PS4 has the better exclusives, you are so biased that it's getting funny trying to play the "I'm interested but we'll see" card.

I owned an Xbox and Xbox 360 day 1 and was a pretty big Halo fan. Xbox One is the first Microsoft console I have not picked up at launch. There's plenty that could convince me to get back on board, but nothing they've announced yet is doing it. I don't have a problem with Microsoft focusing on core franchises, but not at the expense of letting their biggest devs develop new IPs or bring back classic IP....which it seems like they're against doing (outside of outsourced projects). I'd love to see Rare start making some classic open world platformers again instead of their Kinect fluff, but I've long stopped believing that that the studio will be properly restructured.

Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break are interesting exclusives, but they seem more like titles that do well to fill out the lineup rather than something that sells me on the system itself, like a Zelda U or TLOU, for instance. That's what I'm looking for. Something that looks so good I couldn't pass it up.

you posted exactly what I wanted to post lol. Some posters think we forget their posting histories but certain ones just stick out because of their incredibly biased opinion and he is certainly one of them.

So then like I mentioned in my post, that's where Witcher 3 comes in and saves the day, haha.

I think those are some valid points, and it seems like MS has been investing in first parties some, i still don't feel as reassured as i do by the WorldWideStudios Sony has, but i'm definitely keeping an open mind about it.

I made the decision to go XB1 a week before E3. Then they blew me away with that conference with nothing but games, most that I actually wanted to play. Confident I made the right choice.

Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break are interesting exclusives, but they seem more like titles that do well to fill out the lineup rather than something that sells me on the system itself, like a Zelda U or TLOU, for instance. Nothing on the PS4 has really done that either though but I do agree that so far Microsoft hasn't been all that convincing as of yet they are committed to new IP's and growing it's portfolio from within their own studios. Phil did mention Rare will be free to make games they are passionate about and now that Kinect isn't the XBox One's primary focus maybe they can get back to what they do best.

So then like I mentioned in my post, that's where Witcher 3 comes in and saves the day, haha.

Yeah sorry, I'll cut less out. Just wanted to respond right to the Fable sucking part.

The Witcher 3 doesn't save the day there for me though - I buy any RPG that's good, not just one to play heh. Even with that game coming out, I'd still look forward to a good Fable game and it would be a contributing factor to buying an Xbox One. The Witcher 3 is a PS4 game for me and not at all relevant to me wanting an Xbox One or not. None of the multiplatform games are a factor when I consider purchasing one. Microsoft showing a solid, big, "normal" Fable game would have gone a long way to persuading me to buy their system.

how about that company that ms founded just to work for the gears of war license they just bought, how about they scrap gears of war and work on something breakthrough for the kinect instead. oh yeah!

Wouldn't be the first time, Rare ..

If the cycle of Halo, Gears, Fable and Forza remains successful, would they even bother with much new stuff?

That's what worries me.

Quantum Break is a nice standout.

Sunset Overdrive feels like plugging a whole until the factories are at full capacity.

I would definitely like to see Microsoft's studios branch out more. I'd love for 343i, for example, to work on a new IP. However, MS has been doing a good job of working with 3rd party devs on exclusive games. If they continue with that, I'll be satisfied.

Dem feels...also you just re-confirmed what I said above.

I have to agree. New generation and a much different situation. For reasons you already specified, I think we are going to see a much stronger focus on exclusives. Luckily for me, exclusives are why I buy a system.

The first party needs to do more than just gears/forza/halo. The problem with third party exclusives is they don't usually stay that way unless Microsoft owns the IP. If Sunset Overdrive turns into a huge hit I'm willing to bet we see a multiplatform sequel, which would obviously look and play better on the PS4. Microsoft first parties really need to step up.

Sure, just like Gears went multi-plat after the first game was a hu-- oh, wait. Nevermind.

The 360 was doing a lot better against the PS3 than the Xbox One was doing against the PS4. Insomniac have been pretty insistent on owning the IP on this one. That wasn't the main point. My point was that you can't count on third party exclusives all the time. That's why you need to build up the first party teams.

And IP ownership will stop that from happening? just look at what happened to Demon's Souls -> Dark Souls, owning the IP means nothing when you have to deal with 3rd parties so what's stopping (in theory) From to make a Beastborne under say Namco if Bloodborne becomes a hit?

What I'm saying is owning the IP won't stop 3rd parties to go multiplatform (even if it's not a direct sequel) if they want to.

I remember buying my 360 mainly for the JRPGs, and most of them ended up on the PS3 at some point ;<

If we go by history, Should SO becomes successful it likely isn't going anywhere. See Gears of War.

Purely on first party (it's what the thread is about) I'm not that impressed with MS at this moment. I dislike racing games and don't care for Halo. Fable Legends does not look like a Fabke game. They should've rebranded it as a new IP as the Fable name isn't that powerful. Less powerful than the allure of new IP. I absolutely love Gears but that isn't coming out for a good while. Crackdown is so far out and I wasn't impressed with the first two. Also it's bringing more cloud talk which won't pan out.

For exclusives Sunset Overdrive looks great but I haven't seen anything on how it plays. Scalebound and Platinum Games mean nothing to me and I don't know what Phantom Dust is.

Their power right now is all in bought exclusives and I don't think that is sustainable in the long run. I know Sony will deliver on first party so it's a safer bet for me. Basically I'm willing to miss a Sunset Overdrive or Halo game for the next Last of Us-like phenomenon.

You don't know what your talking about.

Dark Souls was made by FROm and published by Namco in the West because Sony had no interest in a sequel. Miyazaki actually spoke of how we wanted to work with them again.

Surprise, surprise, Bloodborne is announced with SCEJ and Miyazaki and the A team. Miyazaki says that Sony approached him late 2012 and asked him if he wanted to make something new on PS4 with them and Miyazaki happily agreed.

a simple google search would reveal that lxp is working on an aaa game

You mean this?
totalxbox said:
According to the Microsoft Studios Wikipedia page, LXP is working on an unannounced "AAA" new IP, which will be exclusive to Xbox One.

Checking the wiki page only give us "Leap Experience Pioneers – Unannounced Game - Original IP" with no citation whatsoever.

Well as someone that was Xbox the last 10 years and switched too the ps4, I didnt see anything that made me think wow i made the wrong decision here and need an Xbox again.

Played enough Halo in my lifetime already and Destiny will fill that gap, I did like the look of SO tho but not enough to buy an X1 for, Fable never interested me after the first one. I think i'll wait a couple of years until there is alot more games on it.

And i need to play Bloodborne which is only being released on ps4

A lot of their games seemed light hearted / colourful. Its the new serious and grey of last gen.

That said it was refreshing at first but I was put off by seeing so many similar styled games one after the other.

I think it will really depend on how the reviews turn out for me.

I know exactly what I'm talking about and thanks for the history lessons (I'll play Bloodborne just fine on my PS4 next year) but what I said was that IP ownership won't stop a 3rd party from going multiplatform that's why I said "in theory" and gave Dark Souls as an example of creating a spiritual successor that went multiplatform even if From didn't directly create a Demon's Souls sequel.

In other words even if MS owned the SO IP Insomniac could still make a Sunrise Overdrive and go multiplatform just fine if they wanted to.
