Feel good about Microsoft first party after E3?

I was watching for the big announcements at E3 to feel out how MS is going forward with its first party games. How did their plate live up to what you expected?

I was pretty disappointed by their output at the end of the 360 life cycle, but I figured they were putting their resources for those games into next gen. Crackdown is something I've been waiting for, but are you guys impressed with the commitment you've seen so far?

Very good. Microsoft has a decent line-up of exclusives up until the end of 2016 and that's without all the titles they're bound to announce in between.

Now I just wish they would focus on gaining more 1st-party studios.

Not really. Way too safe. And I'll get excited about crackdown when they actually show the game.

Until then it is just the same Forza, Fable, Halo cycle as normal.

Plus they lost a promising studio to the Gears of War franchise.

I never liked much of any first party MS stuff aside from the original Halo. E3 didn't change much.

Yep, I'm actually quite surprised. The conference convinced me to go out and buy an Xbox one that very weekend. Can't wait until they announce those rare projects.

I think their upcoming first party games are more exciting than what Sony was showing, and this is from someone who thought the PS4 seemed like a much better console when the consoles first launched.

Microsoft's E3 showing has made me want to get an Xbox One next year instead of a Playstation 4. Phantom Dust, Halo stuff, new Platinum game, and potential new (non-Kinect) Rare game(s), among others.

I was actually quite surprised that we didn't see that much of their 1st party studios at this years E3.

Studios Present:
343i (Halo)
Lionhead (Fable Legends)
Team Dakota (Project Spark)

Studios Absent:
Press Play
Twisted Pixel
Turn 10 (technically they showed some F5 DLC, but not F6)
Black Tusk
Rare
Lift London
LXP & Platformer Next (We know they exist, but MS has yet to properly introduce them, or their upcoming games)

For the most part I am, yes. I would even better if they confirm one of Rare's current projects that Phil talked about is a reboot of an IP....

Considering it was mostly smoke and mirrors, no. I'm not a fan of Crackdown, never played the series. I don't even know what Phantom Dust is. Plus, they keep paying third party studios to make games for them instead of growing their own, looks exactly like what they did last gen. I'm afraid they'll abandon the console like they did with the 360 if things don't go as planned.

Other than Killer Instinct I don't really care about the rest of their lineup. Everything looks like a decent rental to me or was just cgi/non gameplay

Some more Rare IP would go a long way in selling me an xbox though, that Conker tease was brutal.

too much CG and too many studios I have never heard about. They just threw it all out there and showing games coming out in 2016 (Platinum's game and Crackdown) was a bit desperate.

I was only impressed by Nintendo's lineup and I haven't owned a Nintendo system since 1998

Hardly surprising in the least.

Press Play : Tentacles Enter The Mind and Project Totem are already announced.
Twisted Pixel : Lococycle was released as a launch title. Next project is probably still pre-productions.
Turn 10 : They will announce Forza 6 next year. Forza games are announced in the same year they're releasing.
Black Tusk : Gears of War is in development for less than 6 months. They won't even have playable gameplay next year imo.
Rare : Just shipped Kinect Sports Rivals. Too early for the next reveal.
Lift London : They make mobile/F2P games. Not the best place to unveil their projects.
LXP and NEXT : probably saved for Gamescom.

It's the same logic that no one expects Quantic Dream or Sony Santa Monica to reveal anything this year... they only just released a game last year.

Not at all. During a time when they should be reaching out beyond their borders and targeting audiences currently on other consoles, they simply doubled-down (with CGI trailers, so we won't see those games for 18 months at least) on old Xbox IPs.

Don't forget there are suppose to be unannounced first party studioa.

Kind of. I'm pretty indifferent to Crackdown, Halo 5, Forza and Gears. I want new IPs. Sunset Overdrive is cool but I don't think the franchise will always be Xbox exclusive. Scalebound'll be a good game, but it's not first party either.

I want new IPs. Actual, take-a-risk games that give me something new.

Platinium game, Crackdown and Phantom dust are "safe" ... ohh kids these days.

I wouldn't use the word 'safe', but rather that ntkrl spoiled the broth. Many people got very excited at when ntkrl spilled all the sphaghetti, but that's where we start seeing the negative impact of that leak. Suddenly, those leaks were 'the minimum expectation', and MS was expected to do more than that.

Even more so since Crackdown and Scalebound are 2016 projects. Spencer tried to hoodwink that fact by calling it '2015 and beyond', but ntkrl revealing that MS's biggest 2 upcoming reveals were in fact slated for 2016 is not a net positive.

Its a shame they didn't show more of project Totem or Tentacle Enter The Mind. Both of those looked incredibly promising. Also, I really do wonder just how far along LXP and NEXT actually are on their games. Wish we knew more, but I guess being surprised is part of the fun.

Microsoft owns the scalebound ip.

LXP and Platform Next are considered to be unannounced. We can vaguely guess that these are the only 2 teams, because job listings has not indicated the creation of anymore aside from these 2 which started quite a while back.

I don't feel any better about it but I'm also let down by Sony. The output of original IP is subpar all around.

Rarely will any platform holder/publisher announce multiple big original IPs within the same show.

They've got 4 exclusives I'm buying before the year is out, so yeah I'm feeling good. Unless of course Sunset Overdrive isnt considered first party, in which case 3. I wasn't particularly dazzled by their E3 because much of it was in the form of CGI, but it was quite solid.

yea owning a Xbox One in the future is a must. I have to buy one just for the Halo Collection
The PC talk from the bombcast makes me wonder if I should just wait...

How can they be unannounced when you know if them?

According to phil spencer, there are studios we don't know about

I am happy with their announced exclusives but are we supposed to be talking strictly "first party" exclusives in this thread? Because so far those are not the ones that are interesting to me

Well I need Crack
down
but that's 2016 so meh

But SO looks pretty good, Scalebound I think will be good

Scalebound, Halo MCC, Halo 5, Sunset Overdrive, Crackdown, Quantum Break and the new Gears are the games I'm looking forward to. Not bad at all.

I was never a big fan of the original crackdown games, so that game has to prove itself for me to really get excited. Gears of War? Haven't been a huge fan of that since after the first game. The first game is the only one I truly enjoyed.

That said, the rest of Microsoft's first party? Pretty damn exciting, to say the least. Microsoft may not have announced a ton of new stuff that we didn't know about prior to E3, but what they do have is still a very great looking first party lineup of games.

Sunset Overdrive looks amazing. This game personally looks and sounds to me more like what I felt the original crackdown games should have been. I felt Crackdown was too shallow and got old fast, that it didn't have enough 'there' there for me to really stick around and care. Sunset Overdrive, on the other hand, has a character with an actual personality apparently that is apart of a real story, no matter how silly that may be, and interacts with other interesting characters. Every system I get sorta needs that one game that you can just hop into and mess around with and not really take things too seriously, and it helps if the game follows that same philosophy. Normally, the kinds of games that give me that kind of relaxation are sports titles like Fifa or NBA 2K. Sometimes you want a break from saving the world and dealing with ultra serious situations. Crackdown tried to do that, but I felt it didn't do it well enough, at least not for me to have fun with it for very long. It needed more to hook me into the experience. This looks to me like crackdown done right and a hell of a lot more ambitious.

Forza Horizon 2 - Don't buy many racers too often, but this one looks very exciting and right up my alley. I'm not a hardcore sim racer fan even though I've bought enough of them over the years. This is more my style.

Halo Master Chief Collection - The thing I wanted, but was never crazy enough to actually think it would ever happen. All 4 Master Chief halo titles this year on the Xbox One, and for $60? Jesus, that's a like a fucking dream. I mean that. I love the Halo franchise. I also can't wait to play Halo 4, which is my all-time favorite singleplayer campaign of the entire franchise, on Xbox One.

Quantum Break is still coming, and I've loved every game Remedy has ever made. They have never made a game I didn't think was awesome. Each of the games they've made are games I would label as some of the best and most memorable games I've ever played. So, needless to say, my excitement is through the roof for their next game.

Fable Legends - I'm very interested in, but admittedly not totally sold on yet, because I really need to get an idea for what, if any, type of story mode is in this game. I want to see some examples of its story structure and to get a better idea of what moving through the world is like in this game.

Scalebound - Holy hell. I couldn't be anymore excited about this game. I literally cannot wait for this thing to come out or to see what the first proper gameplay is like, but my excitement is through the roof.

Halo 5 - The followup to literally the most fun and entertaining Halo campaign I've ever played. I enjoyed the gameplay more than the other Halos, I enjoyed the overall story execution more than the other Halo games, and no other Halo title does a better job showcasing the Master Chief as a true badass. And, to add to that, I firmly believe that no other Halo title comes close to doing Master Chief's character, Cortana's character and the relationship that these two characters share with one another more justice than Halo 4 did. I don't think any Halo campaign was better paced than Halo 4's was. Broken record, but I'm a huge fan of Halo 4, which I'm sure is common knowledge here by now. Now, I've never not once failed to be excited beyond belief for the next Halo title regardless of what I ultimate thought about the last, but I've never anticipated a new Halo quite as much as I am now after playing a Halo title that I feel truly represents the Halo game I've always wanted, one that I feel comes the closest to capturing the Master Chief and the Halo universe that you read about in the books. And, yes, presentation played a significant role in this opinion also. I never liked how many parts of halo 3 didn't feel like it was receiving the red carpet treatment that a franchise as big as that should've received. They finally did that with Halo 4. And, for the record, I'm a purely Halo campaign player. I just could never get into Halo's multiplayer personally, and I've tried. So, yea, even if there was nothing else about the xbox one that I was interested in, I would be there for Halo 5.

D4 - Another game I'm excited about trying out, plus it seems to be genuinely cool with Kinect.

Ori and the Blind Forest looks fantastic, and was one of the best looking titles at E3.

It was decent, but many of the games seemed to be pretty far off. Wasn't too excited since I feel like a lot of it is stuff we're already so familiar with already -- Halo, Gears, Fable, Crackdown, Forza. Was hoping to see more original IP (though Scalebound is a nice pickup, of course).

They haven't announced anything big though. I could see if we actually saw some gameplay but 1-2 minutes of a couple of CGI trailers shouldn't be impressing anyone. Even the Uncharted 4 trailer was in game but I didn't care. Absolutely nothing happened in that trailer to excite me. People seem to get excited over trivial things.

To be fair, any post-Matrick era changes to the first party, if any, probably won't see the light of day until next year at the earliest.

microsoft own the marlow briggs ip? huh. the more you know.

i think their first party stuff coming out of this years e3 was fine. ms game studios do well enough with third parties and smaller downloadable type games that any gaps are filled pretty well.
