Fellow Americans, do you realize how much people envy us?

I amazed with the amount of comments about health care.

If we get universal care will we finally be good enough for you Europe?

I'm thinking of moving to another country after I graduate. Lack of universal health care is the main reason I don't consider the US. As soon as you get universal health care, the US is at the top of my list of countries to consider.

I enjoy being American and the opportunities I have at my disposal, but nationalism seems pretty silly to me.

Maybe. But you'd have to get rid of your guns and death penalty, and come up with some sane way of dealing with tipping.

So we have to restrict our rights (guns) to please you. What about Switzerland? they give guns away.

And btw not every state has the death penalty (17 have banned it) you can live in the north east without that fear, Hawaii too

There's definitely some bitterness and envy whenever someone else is getting all the attention.

But who is bitter? The reason I find the idea of America being the greatest country in the world isn't because they're a superpower or the most visible and influential country or whatever; it's because some dipshit has written a long arse OP about the country being the best in the world. Unequivocally, discounting all unique experiences, people are jealous because the USA is the greatest country in the world.

It's just silly.

If your graduating and coming to the US you will have a job with health care. And if god forbid you lose it you can go back to your home country. This is what I don't understand about people saying they'd never move to the states. If your moving to the states and are getting a visa you will have a job with health care. Its the stupidest reason to not come at least from foreigners. Its the people that are born here that have to worry more.

I promise you it's not out of envy. I'd imagine it's more to do with foreign policy and the financial or political institutions at play. America is sort of a bossy police of the world, quite corrupt, extremely agressive, often unfair and also often wrong.

I think post 9/11, it's sort of gotten much worse. But it's not anything against Americans themselves (though you guys do have a large portion of questionable folk who vote in questionable people, like Bush (twice), Romeny (admittedly the rest of the primaries line up was also terrible) etc. The entire GOP really. But it's more so the government and it's antics, and the misguided patriotism or conservatism that leads many Americans to blindly support terrible things.

But it's not entirely exclusive to the US. Many (most) countries have a similar thing. I just think the US of today is far more polarised than it was a few decades ago, or pre 9/11.

It definitely is and that's the worst part: we're getting more generalized into two categories: tree huggers and religious patriots. The media isn't helping. Just by defending my country in this thread I'm sure people are already thinking I'm the usual delusional freak with a "love it or leave it" sticker on my car.

But we shouldn't generalize anyone. I know over-zealous, religious crazies who are still the nicest, most forgiving people you can imagine and support gay rights and abortion. I also know left leaning hippies who speak to trees yet can't stand that we have a black president. Generalizations are just useless and get no where.

For me, though, I try and think of myself as a citizen of the world, open to anything.

I guess I'm just a hippie that thinks we should just love everyone and everywhere man...

Maybe I'm wrong, but I definitely sense an undercurrent of envy at times when hearing anti-American sentiment. I don't need everyone in this thread defending themselves and whether their anti-American posts here were out of envy or not; I'm not fishing for that. But I do believe there's a lot of envy, mostly because of the attention it gets.

Maybe it's because I'm a stay at home dad for the last couple years taking care of a toddler and I just assume everyone else are toddlers...haha

Progressives lol. But honestly, reading your post leaves me dumbfounded. We have a lot of (negative) quotes about Patriotism here in the UK (along with positive one's too I should add), but what you said about everyone sharing a similar history and "making it". Well, it's a load of rubbish lol. Most of the country hasn't made it at all, and much don't share a similar history either. It's relatively diverse. If a large portion of whatever country is struggling financially, education or job wise, especially grossly compared to a small elite (which has "made it") how can they be inspired by those who have in essence, not made it at all, just been there? This is the thing with patriotism, it should be great, but it's actually usually stupid. People using farcical ideologies to try and polish up outdated viewpoints.

Freedoms. Every one making it. Lol. One is something most (all?) of the Western world now has or has a better version of, and the other is simply not true.

You're reading my statement incorrectly. I'm not saying that everybody has made it, what I'm saying is that no matter what walk of life you come from (inner city, immigrant, black/white/indian/asian) there is someone in your same situation (e.g. asian immigrant) who has made it.

I had a friend from Australia at my last job and he wanted to go home very badly. I always told him that he was living in Mobile, AL and hadn't really ventured farther from there, but that was enough for him. The prices of education and the job prospects were so fucking good in Australia that he almost talked me into moving as well. He's living back in Oz now and extremely happy, but like I said, I blame the fact that he was homesick and a Muslim living in the center of Christian insanity in America for his bad time. We were going to do a road trip once, because I've always wanted to do the stereotypical Route 66 drive as I haven't been to the SW US yet, but he won't come back here. :/

Shit I've always wanted to do Route 66 but didnt really have the time.

Thats interesting though. I wonder why a muslim would choose to live in that particular area of America. Seems kind of insane. But yes education is cheaper here and there are more jobs. Our economy isnt great but it hasnt reached US levels of shitness yet and hopefully never will.

Have you tried grill'd?

I tried Grill'd when I was visiting a mate in Brisbane. Its quite good and probably the closest thing we have to a decent burger chain. They dont have these in Adelaide yet which is a bit of a bummer.

I liked the parts of europe I've been to (Germany, Austria, Czech Republic.) Wouldn't want to live in any of those places because I'm used to the ridiculous diversity of things to do and food to eat in chicago, I'm pretty much convinced I won't get that anywhere else, but I'll have to go back and see the rest of Europe.

I fucking love England. There are certain things which are just brilliant about the country, there's a lot of things which I am proud of. I know it doesnlt make sense for me to be proud of coming from the same country as the likes of Newton, Darwin, Shakespeare, Rowling, Dickens etc. I don't even like The Beatles, but I'm proud of the influence they've had on entertainment culture for the last 40+ years.

I love the variety of food I can find within 10 minutes. I love the array of cultures and races I can bump into on my high street. I love driving through the countryside. I appreciate our legal system for getting it right 99% of the time, and I love the country-wide knowledge that 99% still isn't enough. I love the fact that we have no death penalty, or 3-strike rule. I love that football is our national game. I love the ideals behind our political systems, even if I don't like most of the people within it.

I love the NHS. I love the England team in all sports, even though the football team is full of people I don't like for 11 months of the year. I was ecstatic when we found out we were hosting the Olympics, even though it'll cost us a shitload of money. I was devestated when we recieved barely any votes to host the 2018 World Cup. I love the National Trust. I love the RSPCA. I love the fact that we have days dedicated to Children in Need and Comic Relief. I love the fact that I'm completely free to worship whatever God I choose. I love the fact that I'm free to worship nothing.

I love that my forefathers had a role in both World Wars, and I'm damn proud to say that we fought Fascism with every ounce of the country's strength. I love the BBC, and fuck you if you want rid of it. I love regional accents, even if a few of them are a bit annoying. I love the way that the British (English at least) love complaining about everything, but will defend the country to the hilt if a foreigner criticises the place (vaguely racist as that sounds) I love the way that we embrace certain parts of other cultures without suffocating the unique feeling of Englishness that you get when walking around a village.

I absolutely adore England. But I'm not so arrogant as to think that anybody should be jealous of us.

Joking aside, the thing that does actually annoy me a bit about Americans is that they think they have some kind of metaphysical monopoly on diversity. "Europe is great, I enjoyed my time there and the social benefits are cool, but I could never find such diversity anywhere else in the world!" they say. Unaware that Toronto, the most culturally diverse city in the world, is in Canada and that there are more languages spoken in China than there are in the entirety of Europe.

I mean yes, your country has very high levels of diversity, obviously as a result of its history. But we don't all live in little cultural enclaves in Europe (or the rest of the world). I mean shit, look at Spain. Some of the bits of Spain hate each other so much that they've actually bombed each other before.

He was actually a white Australian who converted to Muslim. He had been Buddhist 5 years earlier. lol He was a really cool guy, too. Awesome guitarist, was known in the music circles of Australia. Fantastic sys admin and server doctor, way over-qualified for his Tier 1 tech support position. And a good looking guy as well - looks like a cross between Lenny Kravitz and Dylan Moran.

So I always asked him this same question: wtf are you doing living in the asshole of America?

A woman. He met an Alabaman chick on the internet.

You have a fair assessment, but don't over-generalize. Yes, we have melting pots all over the States (my small town of 10,000 in Absolute, Nowhere had at least 15 different foreign cultures that I can count) and maybe I'm sheltered, but I don't think I've ever heard someone say we're the "most" diverse country. We do have a very richly diverse country, though.

Except that's who reported it. The game was in Detroit :)

On Reddit today there was a post that made the front page with over 4000 comments entitled Dear Americans, Do you know how much I envy you? (which is what I rephrased the title of this thread with)

So the reason why a lot of people hate us is because they actually envy us and are just expressing that jealousy in a negative way. It's refreshing when we see foreigners talk about how much and why they like our way of life.

It's considered winning the life lottery to be born an American. And it's true that no one nation has been as culturally influential as America in the history of humankind. But what do you think people envy the most about us?
...
oh man, you almost had me. I thought this was a legitimate thread until I read that :lol

I guess I'm kinda envious of;

. your countless natural wonders, breathtaking vistas, imposing backdrops, iconic skylines, and untamed corners of nature.
. your wild abandon in the pursuit of ever-more artery clogging fast food.
. your politicians, whose grandiose, inflammatory and unbelievable characters butt heads as they desperately vie for power upon the stage of the 24hr rolling news game-show.
. your romantic ideal of America, voiced in book and film and song, an America of open roads and rolling skies, of opportunity amid sparkling metropolises and picture-perfect suburbia.
. your film and television industry, for the sole reason that it has the means to produce the sort of high-budget entertainment that is largely unmatched by the rest of the world.

That's about it. If I ever left England, it'd be for Canada.
Haha, i love how OP quoted this post into the OP but accidently forgot the last sentence.

On average with statistics? Probably. Lost of poor people and income inequality bring us down (something we need to fix). I'd rather live in NYC though. I'd probably live just as well as a swede probably better. NYC>Stockholm

I've never been to Sweden but pretty much everywhere I've been in the world has cheaper booze than Australia. When I was in the states I bought a 1.7L bottle of Smirnoff vodka for about $15 dollars....the same thing in Australia (assuming we sold 1.7L bottles) would cost me anywhere between $40-$50. Its utterly ridiculous and despite this, aussies are still pretty big drinkers.

Being in the middle of nowhere will do that. Is Australian made booze cheap?

According to the OECD, the US still ranks as #1 in terms of household wealth:

http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2012/05/22/americans-are-the-wealthiest-but-not-the-happiest
We have a crap ton of disposable wealth it seems, or a least a lot better access to credit. We just have so much more crap (and most of it is crap) than a lot of other people. Even poor people in the US own a house and some sort of yard.

lol yes but:

But there's a caveat to that seemingly encouraging data point. While Americans make loads more money than many other nations, the U.S. also has one the largest gaps between the rich and poor, with the top 20 percent of the population earning nearly $82,000 a year while the bottom 20 percent get by on just $10,600

I like American TV better than anything Australia makes. Maybe they exaggerate this, as my only real exposure to it is through US TV shows, but the whole competitive college application process makes me glad I went to High school in Australia.

It's sort of like if I had a dirtball neighbour with a really awesome car. I'd envy his car, but there's no way I'd wanna be him.
