BTW anyone notice there are like 5 Smash articles now on ESPN and no FGC ones?
tbf there's nothing much to report on the fgc lately that is also related to esports. maybe they can talk about redbull kumite invitees?

and i'm pretty sure they'll have an article on the evo lineup.

Jan. 26th.

No word on which channel, but if it is anything like last year, its Mike Ross on Twitch's own channel.

Which also means Capcom Pro Talk coming back the week after.
srk already announced they'll be announcing at redbull's twitch channel

edit: just realised srk made an announcement of an announcement. shows how esports evo has become

I both like and hate CPT, mainly when it's Ross and Floe. They're funny, but sometimes they'll be talking about something interesting and then get sidetracked due to Floe fucking with Ross and never return to the interesting subject.

evo lineup seems sort of predictable this year

I don't feel like USF4 will come back as a main game, mr wizard won't let US hold that L for marvel, and they aren't going to add KOF14. I guess the question is how many anime games there will be

I think KOF 14 makes it to EVO if SNK-Playmore was proactive and ensured EVO staff and Wizard that they will have a build to play with like Namco and Madcatz did with Tekken 7.

Probably because the 2nd largest Smash Bros. event ever (and largest Smash community run event) just took place last weekend. Meanwhile, the FGC doesn't have any super major events until Final Round in March. (Mayyyyyyyyybe Winter Brawl, but coverage of that would likely have more to do with its proximity to the SFV launch.)

And like pixelish said, Evo lineup would be notable news as well.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH AND IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE

Im also alive :D

Also, it warms me to see Owen Hart. He was my favorite wrestler up till the accident growing up. Loved him so much as a heal and performer. His match vs Jushin Liger in japan is incredible. Never knew till then Owen could jump to the third rope and do that Mr Aguila spot of hop on rope, sit to bounce on rope back to feet and then springboard off it till then. Guy could do anything and would have been a top tier champion one day had he not been cut short. Would've loved to see him vs early WWE Jericho back then...

aaaaaaah...memories.

Anyhow onto fighting games.
Great weekend for TVC. Me and Faded were poking around on Dolphin and now QisTopTier is getting setup to try and play TVC for the first time. Really excited to see him play since he could never play it before Dolphin since the Wii controller is not really that good and his only option is pad warrior. Now he can play with his PS3 pad on Dolphin and enjoy himself fully!

I bet he learns yatterman-1 for dat pressure.

EDIT: totally fucking wrong so far. He's playing Kaijin no Soki lol. Dat armor.

That is awful. I don't think they are even capable of doing any good music anymore unless it's a rehash of an already iconic theme. Even then they usually screw it up. Music is overlooked too often in fighting games nowadays. Hell NRS does it's best to make it not exist at all.

True. A lot of the classic composers have moved on. While I agree with you, I love that theme. I wish they'd create new iconic themes but it's not here or there.

Game music in general isn't what it used to be. It's rare I hear a soundtrack that sticks with me these days.

Agreed. Most is just very forgettable or very generic. I think one thing that does it that modern actionmovie-QTE-RPGelements monogenre games typically feel like they have to have an epic orchestral soundtrack, and then we get a bunch of people who are not Hans Zimmer or John Williams imitating Hans Zimmer and John Williams.

That, and wub. Wub should burn in the lowest depths of hell. If it stopped existing tomorrow, the world would be a much better place for it.

I mean, good music still gets made:
Gusty Garden
Floater Land

Not orchestral vomit, not wub. Importantly, has a strong lead melody, like games used to.

One of the more ambitious indie games of the last few years owed a lot of that feeling of ambition to its soundtrack:
A Functioning God

Again, strong lead.

Gaur Plains

And a strong, soaring lead strikes again. This is the stuff that sticks at least in my brain.

Honestly, I have no idea what is the best genre of music for a fighting game. Symphonic Metal like Guilty Gear? Heavy assed Dubstep and guitar stuff like KI? Background Jazz like MVC2 and Skullgirls? Individual tracks of varying genres that cut in and out per character like MVC3? Final Fantasy style battle music tracks with a mix of piano, guitar rock and looped melodies? Ambient forgettable shit like Injustice?

Okay that last one I know is trash, because it leaves no lasting impression or identity with the players but the rest...no clue. I know what I like, but Im uncertain what excites players the most.

Hm. I think a nice beat and just a good lead are things that work pretty much everywhere. It's just how you do it:

Bravely Folk Song
Soul Road is something that just doesn't get boring ever. I've listened to it for a whole day on tournament streams without even realizing that it's the same song all day long.

This is one of my all time favourites, just gets me pumped up to play 02UM every time without fail:
KD 0079+

UNIEL's OST does a good job for the most part. Rushing Heart and Monochrome Memory are amazing.

ST is full of classics, obviously.
Russia

3S: Subway Station

So, uh. Leads, I guess? Needless to say that Smash music is full of strong leads because of the kind of game it is, and it's pure crack.

Anything from ASW or Falcom = great and they are both making stuff to this day so yeah :p

The Xrd soundtrack is ass. Ponderous, has no life to it. I don't think I could remember a single tune off it offhand if I tried.

Destiny had a good soundtrack. I love this track from The Taken King, especially once it gets to 1 minute in.

This is the exact thing I'm talking about. Technically sound music but it doesn't make for good game music imo.

Too much game music these days tries to be epic, sweeping, Hollywood esque music, when what made game music so good in the past were simplistic melodies and loops.

I think that song sucks, no offense.

Yeah, that is pretty boring. You want this kind of thing done well:

Two Steps From Hell - Dragon Rider

Two Steps From Hell - United We Stand, Divided We Fall

Honestly, I have no idea what is the best genre of music for a fighting game. Symphonic Metal like Guilty Gear? Heavy assed Dubstep and guitar stuff like KI? Background Jazz like MVC2 and Skullgirls? Music that pumps me up.

And that's Tekken.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgrdlLpFEEM#t=47s

This just sounds awfully generic to me. Tempo is high, but it's so devoid of character that I just can't get excited. Same problem Tekken has in general.

The ST remarks are interesting because the game's footsie game is really rough in a sense. You see much more minute, constantly adjusted spacing in SF4, 3S.

Gaming needs more stuff like THIS.

Fits the tone and the game and its immediately hummable and memorable. Loops easily but not too quickly. Fighting games need to get back into this sort of mentality when it comes to making songs for their games. The second you go to Guile or Ken's stage in SF2 machines you got swept up in the song. The whole hollywood melodic background score is just that...background. It doesn't sweep you up, it just sort of provides a light ambience and fighting games and a lot of other game genres dont need to feel like films. They need an iconic memorable theme more than a background track.

There is a big difference in designing themes and just soundtrack IMO.

Holy fuck this song is crack :D

And 100% agreed. Fuck Hollywood. I want videogame music, not Generic Movie OST #8596

same, loved Owen back in the day and loved him even more after he turned heel

That Freedom Planet track is serious business. Fighting games definitely need more "gamey" tracks like that. Cerebrawl's 3S inspired approach is cool too.

Edit: New games with a CPS2 sort of sound would be awesome, though.

Absolutely. I guess I'm just bummed that SF V wasn't seen as an opportunity to remedy that. The backgrounds are also very uninspired and boring. MvC 3 had some great backgrounds so I know they got it in them. Entirely different team from what I understand?
Eighting and Dimps are completely separate iirc.
Hearing people legitimately saying 'fuck anime' and meaning it at a local
I'd only excuse it if their first exposure to anime is getting destroyed 20-0 by Order Sol. That'll break any man.
talking smack about pc games is a perm?
Bans of any kind are the result of built up infractions and offenses. That is why part of being a good poster is knowing when to cool it with questionable stuff. Only the mods know when your time is nearly up. Some people go all in with bigotry, asshatery and porn images, though. That'll get ya done before you can even make it to member status.

This is why we need new blood and for a good chunk of people in the now marginalized because they are bell ends. Or nutters, or wonkers. All three in equal measure.
