They did this shit for Ultra on the PS4. They did this shit for MKX.

They do this shit because for some reason, they want you to get trophies and tie it to an account while using a stick.

Wait, so to get the trophies it has to be tied to the controller you're using at that moment?

What??

E: Oh, speculation. I was going to say how would that work, because that would make it sound like arcade sticks are Amiibos.

I'll miss Markman being at Madcatz, hard to imagine a time he wasn't there. I know his support and hard work for the FGC will not stop no matter where he's employed.

Two entirely unrelated, large publishers doing the same thing implementing the LZ driver makes me suspect it's not a competence issue. Something else has to be going on.

So T7:FR is quite possibly the last arcade game Namco is making? Damn. And if the owner of the top two grossing games in Japan can't justify further development, that is one ugly look. At this rate, in a year or two all that's going to be left are card and music games.

Their future guidance is also a huge L -- they basically expect significant shrinkage from arcade games and Yokai Watch with no real growth possibilities to back that up. Yikes.

Things are getting weird.

But for real, where's the evidence fighting games are diminishing in popularity in Japan beyond Namco cancelling games? Maybe it has merit? I'm not sure.

Amazon haven't shipped my game yet. Don't think I will get it in time. I ordered on PC as well, so I will figure out how joy2key works again for the first week, I guess.

lots of arcades are closing and that industry is definitely on the decline in Japan, and that's been the main platform for fighting games there.

I think it's more of a statement of how bad the arcade business is in Japan right now. With every game seeking rents of some kind and an increase in the consumption tax, it makes it nearly impossible for independent operators to survive. The number of locations in Japan has been decreasing for years (and the shrinkage is accelerating).

From Gaming side.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I should make it clear. I didn't leave. I was laid off. I'm sure you guys probably saw reports of layoffs.

It was on good terms. They knew I was planning on leaving when I announced it during last EVO. They didn't have to take care of me, but they did. I have nothing but love and respect for Mad Catz.

If you know me, you know I work on a lot of different things. Great news now is I can work with everyone. I'll be okay. Best thing is, I have more time with my daughter now.

Sales of fighting games are indeed very low in Japan. Outside Tekken, all fighting games who did more than 100k sales are licensed games like Dissidia, Jojo or Persona.

Of console ports of arcade games do less than the arcade version because that isn't where the audience is. That is extra revenue from story mode and exclusive features before a game center patch.

Things are getting weird.

But for real, where's the evidence fighting games are diminishing in popularity in Japan beyond Namco cancelling games? Maybe it has merit? I'm not sure.

The Japanese comments in the Nikkei and on 2ch are worried ones, but those are spread across. A lot of the other comments talk about other sales like Wii U sales, PS4, etc.

Sega is still doing fairly decently with Wonderland Wars, maimai, and it's other offerings. Arcades provide experiences outside of fighting games as there are card games, arcade MOBA, shmup, and more.

Sega and Square Enix is still going to do fairly well because of the profit margins they make on their SEGA All Net Multi and Taito Nesica machine licensing whereas Bandai Namco has exclusive offerings on their own proprietary boards and cabinets rather than sourcing to Nesica or Sega.

There are concerns, whether or not it's devastating long term we don't know. Bandai is feeling the effects of the exclusivity it offers and riding on the growth of it's few strong IPs. You need to find a way to capture a new audience rather than only go for your slowly shrinking, hardcore base. Especially with a lot of offerings being provided on iOS now.

Also arcades are closing fast in japan:

According to Japanese Twitter account @iidx_close which keeps record of closing videogame arcades reported online, 257 stores have shut down in the year 2015. Statistics by the NPA show that 7,137 stores were in business back in 2010, of which only 5,439 were still around in 2014.

The issue there is while Sega and Taito/Square make easy money from the networks, what happens when everyone else stops producing new content to publish on Nesica/all.net? As the number of game centers shrinks, it's going to be harder and harder to justify all of the cheapest projects. (And as you mentioned, music and card games are generally cheaper to produce). How does this end, Chunithim and Groove Coaster updates until the end of time?

This seems really high for a Japanese only release of a PS2 game at the end of 08. Is there any way to obtain this game anymore besides just importing it from Japan?

Don't say emulation.

The PS2 was getting games in Japan until 2010 -- they took FOREVER to move on to the PS360.

There was a US release of the PSP version, but it's been since delisted.!
Don't play the PSP version; it's ass.

Not to say those aren't bad numbers but those are console sales number after they made their profit margins from arcade customers. How many of those arcade customers are going to buy the home release months later when they primarily play in arcades?

Of course those numbers are going to be low it's not surprising.
