who called Kotaku?

Did the tournament ever get as hype as Injustice was earlier on in the day? I feel asleep during Marvel and that was pretty boring. Did AE redeem it at all?

The marvel set got normalized after the Green Ace/Rog match, but up until then, that was a damn good top 12.

Listening to art and lincoln's post-CEO stream...so much shit happened. What an insane tourney for gameplay and non-gameplay reasons.

Shout outs to Haunts. Those tech probs must have been a bitch, but it only dropped once, when the power went out.

My only issues were:

1. Kotaku's metric of "top fighting game player" is a system no one worth their salt actively cites and has not been updated to reflect the past 6 months' worth of tournaments. When was the last time someone whipped out NFG in a pissing match over top players?

2. Kotaku still feels the need to reference the Cross Assault incident one year later, despite the fact that it has no relevance to the situation. Considering the situation and how much information Kotaku has, the story can stand well enough on its own.

At least Kotaku is also willing to convey that "positive part" of the tournament and the community -- something that will probably won't make it in the few websites that will relay this story.

Anyways, seems like a pretty regular "heated-moment" incident; people do happen to lose their nerves on situations like these, and the fact that he seems apologetic quite early after it occurred makes it hard to blame Noel too much for this in my opinion.

Agreed.

Oh, I didn't notice there was more after the video embed heh. Yeah referencing that is fucking dumb.

I don't see why he shouldn't report on this.

BUT this is the "Dragon's Crown boobs are wrong" guy. Total hit-fisher who is prodding for reactions to make more stories out of it, which is surely what he'll get for this one--"FGC asked me to not report domestic abuse" or some shit is gonna be the next story.

I hope he enjoys being called the "Dragon's Crown boobs are wrong" guy, as much as Aris and the FGC as whole likes having that one dumb quote sum up the whole Cross Assault situation and the aftermath. The aftermath he probably knows nothing about (the scene as a whole cleaning up a lot in the year and a half since then.)

Noel sure has anger issues.

In this situation, I can understand why he went mad, although, that doesn't justify the actions he took.

Jebailey's comment was basically "this has nothing to do with me, do not run this dumb ass story" and they put it out anyways.

Good to know that Noel is ranked though

Apparently there are official rankings now

man, how the hell did the reference to Cross Assault or even the other positive stuff after it fit into that story? There actually hasn't been much FGC news "as of late" in terms of stuff that the wider gaming community would be interested in. They could fish out a bunch of the individual stories of people helping each other out or whatever small controversies there have been (pot-split gate.)

You know, unless they wanted to do in-depth coverage of the tournament circu---AHAHAHAHAH can't even finish that sentence. That would be too "about video games" for Kotaku.

Poor dude. He lost his cool and made a mistake, but unnamed tournament player and his girl are truly grimy. Things shouldn't have hsppened the way they did, but I can understand why it did.

I don't want to minimize it at all, but it's good to hear he didn't clock her in the face or anything like people were assuming.

shitty situation for all involved and everyone is to blame, but "unnamed tournament player" is a fucking dickhead, as is Noel's girl for cheating on him.

Just read that Kotaku piece. I was wondering how long it would take for them to report on it, tbh. Not sure why people were hoping for it to stay under the rug, but whatever.

Shout outs to Jason Schreier. Honestly there is something awfully lazy about his article. Look at Twitter, crank out story. I could deal with this, if sites like Kotaku bothered to report on the amazing efforts by the fighting game community to organize events like CEO, or run charity events to help people out.

But it's just the dirty shit that matters on Kotaku, broadly painting the FGC as the biggest shit show in gaming.

I can't believe Kotaku did that article

but it cleared up shit we didn't know. Nobody else would have pulled the police report, we'd be going on hearsay.

still, the last paragraph was a facepalming ending to it. they couldn't leave without a big jab.

Im not a Kotaku defender but they do post positive stuff too

Going by Seeded rankings for EVO some of the Internationals players adtually got some decent points. There's a guy named TNT Superfly who has more points than even some of the gods of Marvel! He got two first place finishes at two international EVO events.

They were probably drunk, shit happens (it was 4-5AM post or during the pool party). Plus there is a sort of ambiguity there as to whether she was still his girl or an ex, maybe some miscommunication between the two on the matter, which is probably what led to this incident too.

isnt unamed player rayray? ior is that unconfimred?.

also I llike jebailys response. there was a 3 day touney
Unconfirmed hearsay.

The woman in the story received an accidental blow from trying to break it up is what I'm hearing. Not really an excuse for losing your cool but at least it doesn't seem like he did it intentionally

He "has won" but is he really winning anything these days? I'll wait til evo comes around to actually consider him out of the top

He wasn't on a winning streak when he won Evo though. Went to a few majors but a majority of his time was spent at the old FGTV training. I remember really pulling for him becuase I was watching FGTV on the regular and seeing him practice all the time added to the narrative to me about Champ's Story of "Putting hard work pays off". Not a whole lot of people even expected Champ to win @ Evo. All I was thinking "Hope he wins otherwise that hard work is gonna be for nothing. Lets go champ!"

Just for comparison (this is a different writer), here is an article about the Esports stuff this week, and what a great tournament it was and showcasing the best match from the week:

Shame, meanwhile we get the insider's edition dept.

That's not the way I remember it. I remember perceiving him as the odds-on favorite, and I picked him to win. It seemed like a lot of people felt the same. Chris G at the time was also still playing Akuma instead of Vergil, so his team wasn't quite as dominating.

I still can't believe Aris said all that shit though.

Aris was heated and his point got screwed up. Simple as that.

Pretty much. I've known Aris for a few years now, and anyone who's known Aris or even watched his streams for a while knows that he's the kind of guy who likes to shock people to make a point.. He definitely said and did some very stupid things during Cross Assault, but I think he's more guilty of poorly articulating himself in the midst of an emotionally charged outburst than he is of actually supporting sexual harassment. He made a gross miscalculation and paid the price for it. I know I shouldn't be surprised that his quote still gets trotted out whenever an FGC controversy gets play in the "mainstream" gaming press, but it's still rather annoying when it gets copied and pasted into almost every ugly story about the FGC with little or no regard for context.

I know I'm probably the only person that subs to their RSS but Polygon pretty consistently puts out positive articles about the FGC. Not even just positive articles, articles period, rather than pandering to say whatever is most popular ATM. I understand why they do that too, but when your publication only appears opportunistic, that's when people start with the lolkotaku.
