I think Flux should be higher on the list, he already beat F.Champ and even Chris G more than once, and his execution is great, he does Lightning Loops consistently

MarlinPie just got top 8 at the Fall Classic and before that he got top 25 at EVO. He was also playing at the Danger Room doing very well against other players. I think top 20 rank for him is solid and justified.

I honestly find top skilled player ranking more interesting.

I do too but a skill ranking is only valid by other skilled players and even then there is a heavy level of bias in there.

This is of tremendous help, thank you. It has me thinking of how best to do this. Initially, I was thinking of creating a user interface to this.

But then I realized that one already exists. Challonge.

We should start entering the brackets into Challonge after-the-fact and then taking snaps of the data and slicing and dicing would be greatly simplified.

I parsed these for 2013, you're right, there are inconsistencies. That can be fixed post-processing as the data is brought in.

So who's up to help transcribe data into Challonge as brackets are released?

Daigo dodging? Daigo would body all of his EMP players in a FT10 REAL TAWK!!!! Daigo has the most EVO wins in SF4 he is automatically the best player in that game by a mile based on Triforce's own criteria.

If you talk about raw skill Chris and Justin are kinda well matched. It's just that Justin been at this for a while longer.

justin is better than Chris. Justin is good at 3d games as well. What 3d game has Chris played well in?

In raw skill it would be tokido first. Hands down. Then its justin. Chris (as of right now) is probably in the bottom half of top 10. He excels at 2d games but we need to see what else he can do.

I thought we were discussing just in UMVC3 not overall best fighting game player.

Overall best fighting game player is Tokido. After that would be players like Kindevu, Justin Wong, Ryan Hart.

ChrisG is on his way though, he just needs EVO wins to cement his status among the best. Xian is almost there too, he's very good at Marvel, good at KOFXIII and won EVO in AE.

Tekken 5, Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag IIRC. I believe he beat anakin at final round for Tekken 5 DR.

He did get 4th or 5th place in Tekken 5 at EVO as well.

Eh I was talking more overall. Marvel is its own category, well atleast marvel 3 is.

That's not going to work as easily as you might think, because different brackets have different "structure" in terms of where players get placed in losers bracket after their first loss, and very often, these differences make the brackets incompatible. Example: Compare my recreation of Evo's Marvel Semifinal bracket (http://challonge.com/gke3a33s) to the actual bracket (http://evo2013.s3.amazonaws.com/brackets/mvc3_n1.html). As soon as I get to the 2nd round of losers, there are already discrepancies. Marvelo played Eita, not Ponce; Knives played Scrubeks, not RayRay; etc. A lot of the time, these differences cannot be resolved.

I think an independent app that is more malleable than Challonge is the best answer.
 
How do you watch the Topanga league A? I always see people talking about hows its the most hype / high level AE play. Must be a way to watch it for free...

Casper, you could always just use data from top 8 or top 32 or whatever for tournaments. That data tends to be easier to get.

I see what you're saying here. The solution (and it's not a good one, but the first one off the top of my head) is to have the entire bracket here, not just sections. I believe Challonge and version 2 will have proper support for this.

That said, an independent app for support for this.... I'll start putting together some UI mocks. I have to figure out a way to easily do the data entry (because easing that is what it comes down to).

I could do that, but I wonder how it would affect the math. I'll work through the numbers though.
 
You'd need a league to have a viable ranking structure, as you need long-term statistics.

If SF4 or Marvel's online play was GGPO-quality, you could probably run a league in the US. But if we're going on tournament results, there are way too many variables.

Man. Imagine if SF4 had GGPO quality netcode. You'd get some amazing online tournaments.

In fairness, given that most anime communities are less than ten people per square country...

TBH if you want more people playing fighting games competitively, one of the big titles (SF, basically) needs to have outstandingly good netcode. Online warrioring in SF4 at the moment is like playing SF2 on your SNES then going to the arcade. Nobody wants to sit there, the only guy in their town who plays SF, running into YOLO online players and lag spikes. It's not the same experience as playing locally. Other big competitive games are tournament competitive online.
