Fighting Games Weekly | Sept 8-14 | Fining Nemo

I don't see Smash 4 taking over the scene because the other Smash games haven't done so despite having larger turnouts. Plus much of the fighting game scene is still segregated from the Smash scene.

I do expect to see Smash 4 at more events with fighting games since it will be easier to run on a modern console without having to deal with CRTs, but ultimately it will depend on how well the game does competitively.
there's a bunch of marvel players that started off as smash players so i can see them going back. hopefully the game is pretty good competitively so other pros pick it up.

Damn, scrubs beating top players? I can finally win EVO.

You've been at it like a week. :<

I feel like I made the transition from the first game and am doing how I did back then.

I'm just doing too much autopiloting and not enough adapting. :(

But you're right, it hasn't been too long. I just need to work at it and think more.

What's the deal with scans and GAF? I assume you mean scans of magazine articles? Or does it mean something else?

Yeah, from the TOS:

C. Copyrighted Material

Full transcriptions of articles and whole or partially-scanned images (e.g. magazine scans) are prohibited. Standard fair-use policies apply, and sources should always be attributed.

Then there's the common law built up around it, as best I can tell, direct links to scans are also banable, but discussion of them is not. You can hint to people how to find the scans, but not clear to me where the line is. I guess a common sense line of not doing anything directly to skirt the rule.

--------

Man people get mad salty (or at least pretend to be) over the Smash roster. Did that happen with Marvel?

Scans used to be allowed on GAF and it was probably the best place for flying get early Famitsu info, but then they realized it's probably not a good idea to bite the hand that feeds.

I don't mind having to unlock characters, but when they're almost all clones or vets, it's much less fun. Bizarre design choice for Smash 4, Brawl kinda had a similar problem but nowhere near as bad.

Gematsu translated the Famitsu piece on Elphelt
Rifle-Type

By entering a specific command, players can switch to the rifle. To fire, you must take stance, use the directional pad to aim, and press the attack button. Elphelt is unable to move during a stance, but can aim far ahead of herself.
Shotgun-Type

By entering a specific command, players can switch to the shotgun. By taking this stance, players can make all sorts of movements for close-range attacks. These close-range attacks have tremendous power, and she also has a sharp blow technique and quick forward roll.
Reload Action

After firing her weapon, Elphelt will proceed to put her weapon away, but by entering a specific command immediately after shooting the rile or shotgun, players can reload, allowing for immediate fire after the previous shot.
“Stance” and “Damage”

Shooting immediately after drawing out the rifle or the shotgun will do little damage, as well as only push the opponent back a little. But by giving it a little more time, Elphelt’s stance and aiming sights change, enabling players to at that point deal out massive amounts of damage and even down the enemy character.

First stance character I want to play. Also, I didn't know Sin was going to be an in-game unlockable character. I thought he was DLC too (well, he still is if you're too lazy to unlock him in-game). I guess they're not making him playable outright for story reasons?

well maybe not taking over, but since Melee is already pretty close to Marvel, Smash 4 should overtake it (since Marvel is falling)

I'm glad Smash is gonna have legit combos. It's sounding to be a great game. I think Little Mac is gonna be my main for sure, but that whole excitement of getting the game and trying all the characters out with friends is gonna be so hype.

New Smash has potential. Found out a thing or two regarding movement that I haven't seen anyone talk about yet.

You can cancel your initial dash animation into another forward ID after going back to neutral. It's a stutter step of sorts that allows you to space yourself on the ground. You can't ID backwards out if the forward ID frames ( you'll get a skid animation) but its not very long. Once you get the rhythm down, you can play the ground game, although it's obviously much slower than Melee. That's not necessarily bad. More testing is necessary to make sure there's no way to stutter step backwards.

Mario up tilt combos are legit until we learn more about DI in this game.

I'm glad to hear you of all people say this. You were hating so hard leading up to release that I didn't really expect you to give the game a fair shot.

Smash is the first fighting game where I actually want DLC.

Well if the leaks are all true, then we should be getting Snake, Lucas, Wolf, and Ice Climbers in the future.

I would love some stage dlc and alts as well.

Also what was Sakurai talking about building every character from the ground up? Link looks just as terrible as ever.

I can get behind this. They can do something similar to Mario Kart 8. I also hope the dlc rumor is true.

By the way Casper I sent you a PM a month ago about tournament results, did you got it? :o

I believe I did, thank you! I'm actually doing a lot of work on the core infrastructure, but I have your PM (and a number of other things) on a list of data to pull in.

When I get to that point, I'll definitely have more questions, thanks!

I'm still surprised I've met people that hated the inclusion of Pacman and Duck Hunt Dog.

Some strange people out there.

Yeah, I felt that the newcomer list were very good despite the fact that there are haters. I really hope that Smash 4 would be good game for competitive scene because I don't mind to main Duck Hunt.

dude....and the laugh is not even a taunt, he does it right at the beginning, and he summons hunters? So perfect....

Never thought I would regret buying an american 3DS

Well, Dog have 4 different ways to laugh; intro, final smash, taunt and victory pose. I'm pleased. :)

Good job on that OT man.

Any surprising information from Smash copies out in the wild?

Seems like the DLC will be exactly what was leaked though.

Will get around to adding the Tekken and Thaiger Uppercut to OP.

Man, if it's a thing, there's a hater for it.

I feel like dudes in their mid 20's or less will dislike the roster more than older people. I mean, I'm 27, I grew up playing games like Mario, Sonic, Megaman, Punch-Out, Pac-Man, Duck Hunt, and now they all are in the same game! That's mindblowing for me...young people wants more Pokemon and fuck those old ass game

Good job on the OT btw, and it's good to have you posting here as well

I think even if I disagree with a lot of Sakurai's gameplay design ideas he seems like the main reason we are getting obscure, retro characters and the designs of Pac-Man and Megaman are more "classic" than their current incarnations. I like the Smash Mega man design even more than the MvC, high-pitched Megaman. Smash Megaman is a better balance between the concept art and the NES sprite.

Apparently Rise can do a ton of damage in Ultimax. 10k with resources (probably all of them).

Yeah, I'm liking it too. I especially love how Sakurai is throws in a really old classic character in each sequel.

I think the only one I'm bummed about being cut (for now) are Ice Climbers. They were very unique, but I guess Rosalina and Luma will have to fill some of that role.

If the cross-link exclusive character thing is true, that's diabolically brilliant.
And will sell a lot of Wii Us.
