But once...April begins, things are looking pretty slim, and I think their e3 showing is going to correct that

No evidence - just an equal and opposite hunch. It would make some sense to do just enough at E3 in order to stuff X07 full of wonder, but I'm choosing to believe that MS will bring the amazing again. A bunch of the secretive studio projects ought to be just about ready to get a proper title / a good airing.

If it doesn't happen, there's always Harry Potter to rock my midweek.

I think that's what people are going to be saying after the conference, but in reality, it's just that their '08 is just a paltry, dilapidated Straw Man in comparison to their Guinness Book Of World Records shattering '07.

I mean, Mass Effect is hell of delayed, so it's getting the Gears treatment, but who's going to give a **** about a game we've already been gawping at for almost two years now? Few. Extraordinarily few.

I suppose it's possible that they've been sitting on some remarkable new IP, LBP-style, all year, but that seems unlikely. More likely, they'll just be trotting out stuff that they've been showing for two years now like Lost Odyssey, and maybe a hint of PGR4, only because they're '07 line up is so overloaded with awesome that it's oozed into Q1 '08. But once my birthday rolls around and April begins, things are looking pretty slim, and I think their e3 showing is going to reflect that. Since e3 '05, they've been hyping the same two years of content, what they've seen as the critical time for the console, and not really venturing beyond that. They've built up some amazing new IPs, but their sequels probably won't be as exciting a reveal as something like HOME or Little Big Planet.

They've spent the last two years blowing the same load, and I don't know that they've got enough to get it up again. If anyone will end up "losing" this new e3, it'll probably be them, unless they can swerve some kind of Rock Band connection. Or somethign completely out of left field.

By the same token, continuously showing these games have shielded what could be going on behind the scenes at their studios. As far as an open book, yes, we do know a lot of their future games, but I still think that they are holding some trump cards in their hands. The rain of money isn't going to go from 2005-2007, if anything, they have to turn up the heat even hotter.

Like I said, I'd love to be surprised. Realistically, all they need is a price drop to get a lot of the buzz in their corner as all the Rock Band dazed journalists start doing the math on how much it will cost someone to jump into the game with a 360 purchase as opposed to a PS3 one.

If Blim is right and they've cemented Rock Band as part of their e3 presence and not just EA's, then they could sit on stage for 90 minutes and read Against The Day out loud and still win e3. It's exactly what they need to combat what will be their closest competition's most serious firepower.

In a way, I suppose their approach kind of makes sense, because if they can completely dominate this Christmas, commandingly, like double the sales of PS3 units, then they might have the Hi Def market in the bag no matter what happens.

At this point, there's no hope of them holding off the Wii, so they're goal is most likely to keep the playing field the way it is now, with them having the lion's shares of third party exclusives and timed exclusives, with them being the go to system for what will undoubtedly be the Guitar Hero of this gen, for the life of the system.

Which, if successful, will probably be very good for them.

This is true, but the last sentence is the most important. They really have to have an equal amount of gigantic guns in '08/'09 as they did in '06/'07.

What's interesting to note, though, is that by sheer force of the userbase they've cultivated, they could have much less stellar offerings, and the userbase will still make those games as big as the '07 titles through sales alone. The userbase will be bigger and, if this year has been any indication, the tie ratio will hold.
