Final Fantasy’s Aki Ross | The World’s First Digital Actress (Video)

The Spirits Within ended up being a misstep for Square, but one element I always found fascinating was their ambitions for the main character to appear in different roles with slightly tweaked designs in future movies and games by the company. This video goes over the technical details of her model, their intentions when creating her, and how well executed the idea was in The Spirits Within itself. I also go over a similar character named Laura who was featured in 3 games by Warp Incorporated: D, Enemy Zero, and D2. Would you've liked to see her reappear in other projects to see how well the idea would've worked? Do you think SquareEnix would revive the idea today or at least have her make a cameo in a new game? Do you like her design and personality in Spirits Within? What do you think caused the film's failure?

Spirits Within is easily better than most of what Disney and WB shit out these days.

The Spirits Within was the last time I really cared about Final Fantasy saw it in theaters and loved it

I remember all the wild Aki Ross fansites back then as if she was real (she was even listed with real actresses) nothing like it at the time

Still sad the general public didn't vibe with it like I did. TSW was the exact direction I wanted the IP to go.

Problem with spirits within was a lot of things. The title did it a huge disservice, it was just too early for mainstream audiences to get behind photo realistic cg movies especially in the numbers needed to make the film profitable, and in terms of the story itself it really should have been a miniseries as a lot of the more interesting elements and character building happen before the events of the film. I think if it was released now as a streaming show it could be something really special.

The movie wasn't even bad at all.

It just was a pisspoor FF.
I remember that being my takeaway at the time as well. Really liked the movie, but the only reason it's a Final Fantasy movie is because of the studio that made it. And I guess they have a guy named Cid in it too lol.

I saw it opening weekend. It was OK. I think it wasn't "Final Fantasy" enough for FF fans and it wasn't exciting enough to be the Hollywood blockbuster Square wanted. It was just an OK action sci fi movie with CGI actors.

The end scene where Cid says "it's…warm" made a bunch of people laugh.

not really a high bar.

I saw spirits within at release and i was a young'un and haven't even tried going back to it. my brain doesn't remember shit from the movie other than the energy tenticle things

It looks exactly like the test model of her they used in the making of. She's grimacing. It's her.
It doesn't look exactly like the test model from the making of. The hair and clothes are totally differenf for one. They said they just slapped in her Spirits Within model for that test and you can clearly tell it's her there. This lady from Final Flight of the Osiris looks similar when she's standing in the background, but her features just aren't the same.

Erm...nope.

Short hair and black suit in the test. As it suited the in world image.

It's the same model (or at most very lightly modified). I've got the thing on my TV in front of me.

Her hair and clothes are different because it's a different movie, or does every actor wear the same clothes and hair style in every movie?

If those aren't the same base model with at best some minor tweaks, well they wasted a load of time making it from scratch.

Frankly, the elements in the film that were more easily traceable to the general idea of Final Fantasy (essentially the nature of the alien forces and the resolution of the conflict) were the only elements of any interest in the film, which was otherwise a collection of the worst tropes of American action cinema of the time. Visually, the film was an admirable attempt but too premature and very often the animations were too stiff for the level of realism of the models

Okay, rewatched it at home and I can't def see the resemblance in another shot where she's standing in the background. Your screenshot looks more like Abby from TLoU2.
