What makes the action RPG better then ATB or the X system for those that prefer it? I've never quite gotten that.
The ATB or X system allowed the developers to really go nuts with the character animations, the strategy with each battle, the different " bulld-up " systems like limit breaks or whatever snd such like that. Hell the animation sets for all the different attacks on FFX are so far beyond anything seen in a current day ARPG it is mind boggling. I'm watching Tidus as we speak run at an enemy, jump off him, hang in the air, build energy in his weapon which he then sends down in beams of glowing light which then explode in a wall of fire which sends all the enemies into the air and then slam down to the ground.
And that's just one attack. The animations are ridiculous in X and the battles in general are quite fast but still have plenty of strategy to them due to well designed enemy encounters that almost always have something dangerous to look out for. A simple regular foe like this 4 armed ape thing will go into a ready stance like a euro boxer and beckon you to hit it, if you do he counters in and knocks you in the face like a boxer for big damage.
That's what I've always loved about these systems vs ARPG systems. It allowed the teams to go nuts with animations and particle effects and spell detail and battle tactics.
