So on the subject of FF as a whole, my sister is coming over to visit soon with her kids and I want to introduce her oldest daughter (7 y/o) to the series. I haven't played X yet and really wanted to play through it together with her - would you guys say it's relatively safe for kids? Also out of curiosity how old were you guys when you played VII?

I haven't really played enough of FFX to give an opinion on that.

As far as how old I was when I first played FFVII though, I was in 6th grade so 10-11 years old.

Kids these days wouldn't put up with the slowness of IX's combat. Even I get fed up and I love the game. X is the best introduction to kids these days.

She's 7. She probably doesnt know any better, lol.

Yes, it is slow, but everything around it is pretty great. I'm still sticking to IX. It has Vivi, the beginning they are trying to capture Garnet, it has a musical, airships, etc etc. All great stuff for kids.

- Fireworks
- Theatre (on a ship!)
- Moogles
- Vivi
- Princess and nobles
- Knights in shining armor
- Ass-grabbing protagonist

They have guts to remake this, let me explain

Only the first CD of Final Fantasy VII is bigger than any JRPG they've released since the PS2 era, when they became more cinematic (this trend started with Final Fantasy X which was already "so damn short in the number of events and dialogue" compared to previous entries

I don't see how can they release the game being as big as the original and with every event being a cutscene, they should do many "text based" cutscenes, an hybrid of cinematic events and text based that "Tales of" has been using for a while.

By text based I mean the "press x to see more" from player's perspective, like in FFI-IX, when they halved this in favour of cutscenes RPGs started to get shorter

I was pretty young when I played VII (I had to ask my mom what a brothel was =X)

I'd say X is a better option. VII also has some pretty dark moments (for a kid at least).

I was 7 when I first played it and it was magical. Definitely go with VII.

Final Fantasy IX is bliss in disc-format. As long as you can withstand the battle system, that is.

Just play X HD.Its the best "modern" version of FF you can play right now and its colourful and gorgeous audiovisually as well as easy to play.

Molasses combat is my only real gripe with Final Fantasy IX. Makes replays a real chore. :(

Well, that and Trance is stupid compared to Limit Breaks, I guess.

I agree with you, though. IX is the best FF for a young child. I bet children will find the romance between Yuna and Tidus too mushy. Zidane and Dagger's relationship seems more relatable to younger children.

I must have been 8 or 9. I got the FF7 demo on a disc. And I remember it being very very confusing because id never seen a turn based RPG on consoles before and I didnt get why I could move or block. Suffice to say I am still not a huge fan of turn based combat.

Even if Nomura made this ARPG, I would disappointed if he can only put floaty combat ala KH

I mean I love KH Combat, but come on vary it a bit.

Hmm Final Fantasy VII came out in 1997. So I was 16 at the time.

Athough FF6 on the eShop might be a better entry-level FF game. It's also a PSOne Classic for PS3 / Vita.

Either FF6 or FF7 should suffice for introduction to the series. FFX is good too.

X has a few morbid moments, especially an event that happens early in the game. No blood or foul language though, but death is a theme during moments of FFX.

As for the second question, I was 7 when I first played VII.

When the game first came out in 1997, I didn't own a PS1, but I remember trying to convince my friends that did that there was a secret cheat code to uncensor the swearing. This was the exact same time as the Tomb Raider nude code, of course, so it wasn't hard to make shit up back then.

We were also 12 years old and swearing in console games was like this crazy, shocking thing for us, after a decade of Nintendo's whitewashing.

Overall yes it's just fine. I'd equate it to showing them Star Wars. On the whole, it's completely harmless, just probably more actiony than the typical stuff they're used to. There are occasional moments where people die, but it's never gory. Again, very similar to how you'd expect to see death in a Star Wars movie. Though I'd say FFX treats death with more respect and solemnity overall, and I'd argue that's a much better depiction of death.

They say the word "damn" about 2 times in the entire game(as a 10 year old it filled me with glee so I remember them quite well). Other than that you're smooth sailing.

Also, as a game to play in front of them, and potentially pass them the controller from time to time, FFX is great! Cutscenes are voice acted, and the FMVs are beautiful so watching it is a treat. And the turn based battle system makes it approachable gameplay wise as it doesn't require any crazy reflexes or hand-eye coordination.

how would the KH Combat even work with all those party members all having their own style of attacks

Nah. I think we will see an more dynamic/action approach of the ATB

I would think a young kid would find the chibi version of IV to be the most appealing. And it's on the most accessible platforms.

Although, I was 6 or 7 when I was following my brother on the original FF1, and even that was a little intense for me to play by myself (I was terrified they would die under my control). FF2 (IV) was the first I could play by myself years later.

It's kind of sad how people's attitude is often "It is 2015. Turn based combat has no place here" instead of "It's 2015. What new ways can turn based combat take advantage of more advanced hardware?"

People always take such an ignorant approach when talking about Turn-based combat. Hello, guys turn-based can have it's own innovations, too. FF itself has had several examples of it.

I really hope they take a classical approach(in terms of fan involvement) when designing this game.

Community design sucks, especially in a game as touchy as FF7.

I don't get it either. Besides for me personally action combat gets way more boring & repetitive feeling then turn-based does. Guess I just like "passive" gameplay more then mashmashmashmashmash. Turn-based also gives ya a break from running around all the time. An its not like action combat is gonna be all super cool amazing looking like in the movies. Its just gonna be your regular ol' sword attacks an occasional limits/magic. AC it will not be!

I agree. It's as if people forgot that Action RPG's are just as old as Turn-Based RPG's are, & have been around since the early 80's.

Real RPG fans would realize that.

And I mean FFX and FFXIII have two of the turn based systems with the most potential, building off of either could mean great things for FFVII: Remake. I'd even take building off of FFXII which isn't quite turn based but is hella fun.

He're hoping they can capitalize on this hype in a reasonable time frame.

they won't

Its a shame that PC port to PS4 got pushed to winter. I bet they could have made some $$$ on that if it hit around E3.

But its square and even managing a project as simple as porting a 20 year old game is hard for them.

Such a massive delay for such a simple project gives a hint of the kind of delays the real remake will have us endure.

Its.gonna.be.nuts.I wouldn't be surprised if it takes 5+ years to come out and becomes cross gen on PS5(depending on how short/long this gen is)

Come on! It's not like they've done that-

Oh.

I still think we'll get it before 2019.

This might work out for Nintendo.

The NX has a good chance of getting a timely port.

I would say X-2 and XIII are the groundwork for modern ATB. If FF7R builds on either of those, I would be very happy.

To be fair, I see people hold a similar attitude towards action based combat as well.

"Action combat doesn't take any strategy or skill. It's just a bunch of button mashing!"

Ultimately either type of combat can be innovated or imoroved in different ways and it's just a matter of preference. Personally I would prefer FFVIIr be an action game because I like to be in the drivers seat as much as possible instead of being a voice in the characters head that tells them what to do. However I don't mind turn based combat so I wouldnt mind it returning.

There ain't no gettin' off this train we're on!!

I didn't play it all the way through until I got a PS2 when I was 17. I played some of it when it came out(I was 13). My first FF was VI when I was 9 or 10. I've played all but a couple mainline ones and I'd say they're all safe.

I really don't get the idea why some think because of the amount of hoops FFXV went through to finally get to a playable state the same thing is going to happen to FF7:Remake with countless delays and whatnot. Or because FF7's Steam release was delayed until Winter.

Did you know that Square-Enix didn't even port the original PC release to Steam and it's various additions, that was entirely DotEmu porting work. I doubt Square is stressing over porting the Steam release to the PS4, they probably aren't even handling and letting another porting studio like DotEmu handle it again.

For one thing there was three major things that effected Versus from the outset, and Nomura directing isn't one of them, and 4th reason which is regard to FF7 itself.

1) The biggest one was needing to divert almost most of the staff away from the game to fix the disaster that was FF14, as well as additional staff on FFXIII-2 (They even NEEDED outsource to tri-Ace because that's how understaffed they were), Less people on a project means, that much things getting done.

2) Then you need to factor the console generation shift scrapping the old console version that was on a completely architecture (PS3 and it's Cell derivative on PowerPC) to the newer console gen (PS4 and x86) on top of a complete engine shift abandoning the Crystal Tools to Luminous. I doubt what we see in the Duscae demo could have been on on the PS3 anyways without some consideration concessions made.

3) Versus was canned in 2012 and repurposed into FFXV. In fact most of the staff that were working on Versus are not even part of FFXV, It cannot be considered the same game anymore at the time when Tabata took over in 2012.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1057197

4) Unlike FFXV, FFVII:R is a remake of an already existing game. So things like creating an entirely new plot outline, or characters and their background stories, the world setting and it's locations, etc. This stuff has already been established in the original so, they just have to expand and improve on whats already there, instead of having to create all entirely new ones like for FFXV. Creating an entirely new game with nothing established is different than remake which has an existing universe and lore to work from.

---------------------------------

I doubt FF7-R will have to deal with the project being scrapped for one console generation in place for another along or being shifted to an entirely new engine, and 95% of the staff being shifted / moved to fix some other project to slow it down. Those were the problems that plagued Versus' conversion into FFXV. I don't think any of these things are factors for FFVII:R
