I think even early 2017 is overly optimistic.

It's already been in development for awhile, it's on Unreal 4(probably) and the world and story and pretty much done aside from the changes they want to make. 3-ish years sounds pretty good to me, especially if they are getting outside help, like from CC2 and Sony,

Nomura...you are getting sleepy...verrry sleepy. When I count down, you will sleep and listen. 3...2....1...sleep.

The levels will be designed similarly, however the camera will follow 3rd person and the scale of the cities and backrounds will be beautiful and LOOK enormous.

The battle system will be ATB, but the fights will look more cinematic and may even have enhancements or tweaks to attacks, limit breaks, and summons. The sense of urgency will remain, just as it always has.

The music will be orchestrated, maybe except for the boss battle which sounds like Boston playing metal. Also things like G-bIke and some other stuff that use synthesizer can be practically the same.

The world map will be open world, obviously scaled down a little bit, with loading when you reach a city or location barrier.

You will fix the Gold Saucer games so that you will not be able to stop playing them, because they are so awesome, and have online leaderboards.

The in game tasks like cpr, dolphin jumping, stealth, mountain climbing, and frustrating puzzles shall remain, because gameception.

Silly things like RedXIII in a sailor suit and nobody noticing, Palmer shaking his ass, and whatever other 50 goofy moments will be hilarious, especially since the entire game is pretty dark.

Last but not least, whatever you do, just make it amazing and people will be happy. These are not my commands, but those of God, and if you mess this up I will renounce gaming forever, for this is the only game God and myself have ever truly cared about.

When I snap my fingers, you will awaken anew, and will create the greatest game in the world...again!

*snap*

Lol, yeeeeee, no.
so Hidemi Matsuzuka posted a new shirt which is in development right now.. the background is definitely Midgar from FFVII:Re.. so it could possibly show Sephiroth's FFVII:Re design as well.

That's one ugly t-shirt.

The more info they can give us early the better, that way all the "I'm out" people can go along with their lives and not have to worry about 'suffering' in FFVII:Re threads. ;)

Well, Advent Children-like battles would basically look like FFXIII (which they admitted was inspired by it). The biggest question is just how inputting commands will work. Menu-driven like FFXIII/-2 or face button-based like LR?
I'd be perfectly fine with something like X-2 or even XIII.

I'll probably bail out if they go full on action RPG, though. At least if that leads to the playable cast being downsized.

Uhm, is this new news? Dramatic battle system changes?

Official Playstation Magazine said reported this, apparently. I might just be late to the news. I'm a little slow sometimes.

Those comments can be interpreted several ways. He mentions how it's still gonna be recognizable and won't turn into something like a shooter. Yet he also mentions how it's taking inspiration from Advent Children, something Versus, now XV, also took inspiration from for its action battle system.

And of course, that being said we want to clarify: We’re not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that. We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it’s still recognizable.

What exactly is so scary about that? You were kidding yourself if you thought for a second that they'd make the battle system exactly like FF7.

To the people saying they're out: what does that mean exactly? Will you literally stop following/reading/watching the news about this game?

I'll still follow the game, just to see how much worse the changes get (kind of like that car crash that you can't look away from), but "I'm out" means that I no longer have any interest in spending my money on this.

This remake, as much as I wanted it to be, isn't for me. It's for someone else.

What the hell!? You still don't know what it is. It'll be flashier, sure, but there's no knowledge yet of how it will play. Wait, for piss sake.

Recent negative experiences with Square/Final Fantasy games sets the precedent for me to have zero faith in these major changes. As someone who strongly disliked the FFXII battle system (to where I just stopped playing after a couple of hours) to the insultingly lazy battle system of FFXIII (the game the destroyed most of my faith in FF moving forward), yeah-- if Square is making major changes to a system that i felt comfortable and familiar with and making it something else? I don't want any part of it.

But then people couldn't bitch and moan. :P

Honestly just wait till we see footage, there extremely vague on what the actual changes will be to the battle system so it could be anything.

No!! NOOOOOO!!! DO NOT DO THIS SHIT, SQUARE! Don't fuck with the combat mechanics please. I fucking beg of you!

For God's sake give us the ability to make it an option or something!!

Well i give them the benefit until i see actually gameplay BUT If it ends up that i only can control cloud in battle or that the materia system gets neutered or even replaced >:| he can just stop for all i care and don't even bother because that's not a remake that's just another ff7 name cash in.

I think the best you can hope for is that they make 2 different versions of the game. 1 with atb and one with action rpg.

Do you only play turn based games?

I *strongly* prefer them, when it comes to RPGs, with Champions of Norrath-like hack & slash / dungeon crawls being in the mix.

Battle system changes from familiar turn-based combat (FFX and before) have gradually turned me off and away from the later FF games. Strictly preference.

Weren't FFXIII and FFXV both inspired by Advent Children? This new FFVIIR battle system could literally be anything. Not to mention the first FFXIII trailer and FFVersus XIII also had different systems than the final versions.

You'll have the option to play the PS4 port if you want the same battle system.

PlayStation Magazine, game director Tetsuya Nomura said that the team will be making "dramatic changes" to the game's fights. "And of course, that being said we want to clarify: We’re not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that. We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it’s still recognizable."

they really have still said NOTHING. I will be furious if they really do make an action rpg, but as of right now they've said nothing. The final line here honestly sounds more like it will be some kind of menu driven RPG (with only the comparison to shooter as opposed to FFXV being the one thing not making it obvious.)

So seriously, take it easy for now. We really know nothing. This winter when we actually learn more, if they do go action RPG then PM me, I'll have the pitchforks, torches, maces, axes, 2 handed axes, battering rams, swords, great swords, katanas, cannons, daggers, shanks, glass bottles, shovels, throwing stars, metal chairs, well balanced throwing rocks, and rob schneider all ready to pass out to the mob

Im 99% sure its a arpg.

Anybody still expecting the same exact turn-based battle-system (with random encounter even, LOL) is plain delusional and should immediately stop following this game's development for their own sake, yeah.
At least half of their target audience for this will be young, modern gamers used to faster, immediate gameplay.

Combat isn't a strong point of the JRPG genre, turn based systems rarely come down to much more than a really slow form of hack and slash.
Exactly.
We once discussed this matter for days in a FFXV thread. This post says it all:
While I agree with you, I think that problem extends far beyond FF, and to almost every JRPG series.

The much-lauded difficulty of the SMT (and related Persona titles) comes almost entirely from a need to "think", or so people say, but really the vast majority of fights come down to the same sort of rote memorization. There is rarely a reason to not go into every single fight using your weakness-targeting attacks on each enemy, and then buffs/debuffs if you know you need them and/or know the enemy is weak to particular ones.

All of these systems that ignore things like positioning and timing tend to fall into the same position, IMO, and that's one of memorization and repetition being more important than any higher-level thinking or strategy.

It's one of the main reasons I like the move towards real-time, because it add another element of unpredictability.

U guys are crazy, FF7 remake us real, I'm open to whatever the team believes in and is passionate about. FF13 with materia and more options sounds great to me, just don't hand hold us with autopilot AI commands.

What do you even mean with crazy? you kinda describe the orignal battlesystem lol
Remove the stupid stagger and add chracter switching and we are golden.
Also more options sounds funny it will be a miracle if they can pull of the old materia system you kinda had more possibility's with it than in any other ff system

The endless debate of Turn Based vs Action. I'm for the first one, but I've already started my brain reform to try and accept whatever comes. Nevertheless, watch the huge backlash this game will get when this comes out, especially from FF7 fans.

The only people who will backlash the game are the people who have nostalgia goggles fitted on a bit too hard, or people who instinctively flinch away from anything Japanese

I have full confidence that Nomura and co have the skills necessary to make this game a quality work. They know the stakes and the expectations. My only advice would be to not listen to fans in general when working on the game.
