I'm too aware of how much smoke and mirror world-maps in FFs were anyway to really care if they scrap it or not. Many of my favorite JRPGs, like Shadow Hearts or Baten Kaitos, only have a menu-based world-map, too, and I love them.
If they do a full-scale world-map for FFVIIR they'd have go ALL OUT. No oldschool one, no DQVIII one, but FFXV. And if they do that, then even UE4 won't magically make them finish the game before 2019. Though, maybe I overestimate the size. FFXV would probably still be equal or bigger than FFVIIR with a similar scale (huge zones with loading inbetween new regions - unless FFXV will be completely seamless open-world, which would be crazy).
I'm curious: can you seamlessly traverse the ocean in Witcher 3 to get to other land masses? Is the world seamless or are there loading transitions between zones?
