Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

just watched this a few minutes ago.... huge huge FF VII fan (bought my PSX just for the demo that came with it and basically close to my #1 favorite game)

first thought was actually a bit underwhelmed :O I kinda didn't like the voice acting I guess... Barret sounds so... serious. He should be hollering and howling. Both Barret and Cloud seemed a bit skinny, too. I mean, they looked too normal ;p Cloud is OK but I kinda wish Barret was bigger.

I guess I was hoping for maybe slightly disproportionate realism... kinda like the FF VII concept CGI, like that original CGI of Cloud in front of Shin-ra HQ... more realistic than chibi but just a little disproportionate. this looks basically full realism a la AC. I always thought that when you model Cloud's sword proportions based on disproportionate body's you gotta sort of keep them the same. it sword looks better when you have a little bit of a disproportionate body size, kinda looks weird when he's just a realistic skinny guy walking around town. wish it was a bit more like the original CGI concepts but i mean, that's just personal taste anyhow so no biggy, just smalls.

sort of super subjective stuff aside though... pretty happy but what i saw. game looks good and farther along than I thought. the combat looked really good... kinda too flashy? but maybe it's a little overloaded with special particle effects and not indicative of regular combat. and yeah I was hoping for turn-based but it looks like it's kinda... FF XII or XIV esque? real-time buth you use menus to attack, not press X to hack and slash? or at least a mix of X attacks and menu for tactics... looks good, at least, and I'm happy to see the menus

it was kinda weird seeing some of the boring world movement parts haha just because you build up a game so much and forget about that, yeah, there's generic walking around the town and such. but that's great... shows progress. definitely overall psyched.

Yep

Let's look at female Cloud for reference

Needs more belts. Why stop at 13?

music sounds good, put my worries to rest about uematsu not being involved. also I was one who wouldnt have minded atb making a return, but i like the new fight system based on the little i saw. looks good and im hyped.

... What...? If anything this looks like a flashier Crisis Core.
Versus XIII was kinda looking like that at one point

I'm almost serious.

This is everything Versus 13 was supposed to be. lol

That's pretty obvious. Nomura's blog post about 'burning passion' really comes back to me heh.

Like a fusion system of Crisis core, Type 0, KH, Versus, and original FF7 all mixed together

My assumption is that those were Shinra soldiers, but SE/Nomura/whoever changed their minds since then and went with the more original look.

Ah, I kind of liked the designs, kind of fit the slightly more realistic vision they had, maybe they could have met a common fusion between both designs.

Looking around the internet, it seems people are interpreting the battle system in a million different ways. I'm seeing some people saying it looks like Grandia, with some saying it looks like Xenoblade with more control.

As much as this news is giving me an aneurysm, it might be a good idea to wait.

I disagree. For me the best part of the game was when you were free with your ship and were allowed to search yoirself for hidden stuff. Now people domt bother exploring anymore and just look for it online. Back then I think I spend 50hours to breed chocobos / try to find hidden caves / landing on every island and hidden spots to see if there was something cool/ be the vest at every single game of the gold saucer / ... That freedom man. Its the best

Now this is one thing I didnt think of. I really hope the world will be like XIV / XV /Dragon Quest VIII, where its totally explorable and not some point to point on a map.

There has to be a full overworld... a fully realized overworld. Same with whatever airship travel.

I dunno how someone could get Grandia out of that. Unless they are on auto movement after targeting an enemy?

I'm sure this was discussed to death already but this is officially a cross platform game right? It's a timed exclusive for PS4?

I still think the left looks significantly better. her facial features look more human. I feel like in the transition, her face ended up looking more doll like, which is a little weird. Also, I think the red hair is just easier on the eyes and fits better with the rest of her color palette.

They might be, which is my point. We know how it looks, but we don't know how it controls. All we can really assume is there is some kind of combo system in place based on the menu going grey during attacks, but even that isn't set in stone. Everything else is speculation.

People are going to be wracking their brains over this until we get more footage.

Bruce Lee couldn't swing around a sword as his back and taller than him.

Ha true but they're clearly going for a similar aesthetic. The whole super soldier aspect of FF7 really never translated well into physical design. Really on Angeal from Crisis Core had a physique that matched that aspect. I'm assuming with Cloud in this remake they are attempting to push him towards a more realistic take on his body while still keeping it stylized. So he's incredibly muscular but very thin making his feats superhuman looking.

The only thing I don't quite like of the remake model is the hair, which looks greasy.
They got the hair wrong tbh. OG cloud has his hair all on one side of his head, not even like the remake has it.
Though i'm sure the character models will be tweaked from here til release

Now that people have pretty much established at this point whether they like or dislike the footage/battle system/gameplay... some follow up questions:

1. For those who are ok with a full-on remake, and them changing a lot, how much change would be too much for you? For example, hypothetically, if they just took certain towns out of the game or something. Like Kalm just wasn't in the game. Or maybe
Aeris dies at another location or in a totally different way
, or maybe they add some towns that weren't in the game at all. Say they remove or change certain bosses, and changed big chunks of the story. Would you be ok with that? Or do you draw the line eventually?

2. Do you still want materia in the game? How would you implement it?

3. For the towns and locations they do keep the same.... how closely do you want those to the originals? Do you want them just generally the same, or almost carbon copies, just with brand new graphics?

I wonder how much of that "gameplay" was target render vs what it'll eventually look like. I'm getting a lot of SE Bullshot bullshit cgi nonsense from those battle scenes like with the first 13 trailer, Versus trailers, and Kh3 trailers.

i'm serious ;p I mean, I don't know exactly what... to quote the great philosopher king trevor philips, "it's sort of like the perfect turd... you don't know what it is, but you'll know it when you see it" lol so i don't know how he's supposed to look closer to the concept art but i do know i wish he did haha

but again, not a big deal, and slight changes can be interesting, too... i'm sort of excited to see how all the shin-ra corp guys look different.

Well, the framerate was pretty terrible, so I'm willing to bet all of that gameplay segments were entirely real-time and not target renders.
