Nobuo Uematsu is definitely my fav composer. An unbelievable legacy of both quality and quantity, the man behind so many memorable gaming themes, made him the ‘’John Williams of gaming’’ to me, for lack of a better comparaison

So I followed the making of FFVII Remake (and its soundtrack) as close as I could

When the game released, I immediately started looking for the soundtrack

Single option : the physical japanese (import) - 8 discs megaton

TRACKLIST | FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

This sprawling selection of tracks from the long-awaited title spans seven discs and features "Hollow," the brand-new theme song from composer Nobuo Uematsu!

Not willing to pay that much, I decided to wait for the iTunes version like the poor, cheap bastard that I am.
Sometime in May, it finally showed up, unnanounced, on iTunes Canada

I was anxious to listen to it all outside of the context of the game, which was the only way I enjoyed the music so far.

I was looking foward to new takes on old themes, but I was also looking foward to some of the jukebox songs. I wanted to heard good sounding versions of Tifa’s Theme, the new song Stamp, and that weird-ass hip hop take on the Chocobo Theme

Unfortunately, all those jukebox songs seem to have been compiled as a single CD; the elusive disc 8, which was not included in the iTunes version (no deluxe option, either, at least at the time)

To this day I have still no idea why this cd was excluded from the iTunes soundtrack
Anybody knows why?

Also, what did you think of the Remake’s OST? How does it compare to the original, to you?

the Remake ost is stellar. The multi variation of phase also make the soundtrack elevated to whole next level.

I'll be suprise if it not win best soundtrack award this year.

and Nobuo Uematsu always deliver. His part is most awesome. Masashi Hamauzu and others also good, but not close to him especially how simillar Masashi Hamauzu's part is to XIII soundtrack.
Nobuo Uematsu on other hand is very versatile. Another composer i think come close is Masayoshi Soken.

I liked the original OST better but I tend to prefer original games over remakes. The remake's OST is objectively much better produced and orchistrated; for me it's mostly about the nostalgia of the original that makes me prefer it over the remake's. Uematsu is definitely a musical genius, right above Mitsuda for me.

The execution of Remake's OST is phenomenal. A character shows up? Well their motif starts getting layered into the same song that's been playing. The songs build over boss battles. And there's some fun takes on the originals.

My only problem is they backed down from the heavy synth sounds for things that are "unnatural" (Shines/Sephiroth) verses the planet/life stream being more orchestrated.

I imported the limited edition a few months ago. Great soundtrack. My only gripe is there are so many tracks so it’s hard to pick out the bigger standouts. It took me awhile to rip and rename all 8 discs from Japanese to English.

Thankfully the remastered soundtrack didn't stray too far from the GOAT original. Some of the new tracks like Jessies Theme and Avalanche theme were pretty good.
Didn't like what they did to the Wall Market tune though...

I got worried for a while when Uematsu has gotten sick, and wondered about collabs with different musical approach on an ost people are really familiar with, but in this case it kinda blended all nice nicely in the end. Pleasantly surprised

Agreed. Nostalgia + the original songs were already good + the new ways they remixed the tracks and added even more songs and varieties = aural pleasure.

Yeah the original FF7 OST was a product of it’s era. Obviously nowadays there’s next to endless possibilities with game soundtracks, but at the time it was pretty much the top of the ladder, and the ost has aged well in many, many ways. A lot of its charm is still intact today, I think

I also agree on this. the original was far from being all ‘’orchestral’’ (much, much less than, say, FFXII’s OST)

I’m a bit worried about having already faced the like of Sephiroth in part 1 and already heard a version of One-Winged Angel

This song is so iconic (both musically and where it’s used within the game) that I would hate to hear 12 versions of it throughout all the remake parts

Like when the Star Wars prequels started to over-use Duel of the Fates in sort of anti-climatic and unusual places

Kinda makes it less special in my eyes

I loved the Remake OST, i prefer a few of them over the original, but i do think some of the original are still better.

My favorites are Flowers blooming in the Church, Aerith's Theme, Tifa's Theme, opening theme(Midgar City of Mako), airbuster theme, theme of love and Jenova Quickening from remake, i still think the best version of One Winged Angel and Those Chosen by the planet are the originals.

The song that plays before you jump into the Singularity is amazing as well.

I'm mixed in how i feel about Hollow, i want to love it so bad but i hate the fact that the guy breaths into the mic so much.

True. I think there’s about 7-10 variations of the main fight theme alone
I particularly enjoy the Abzu and Let The Battles Begin! - A Merc’s Job versionsof it

There’s also like 5 Aerith theme variations, too. I find most of them quite good and charming (even the ‘’Red Carpet/dress reveal’’ one)

Yeah I’m not too fond on the 3 versions of Wall Market either.
In-game, it doesn’t bother me as much, though, but on my iTunes/phone I tend to skip, generally (I did listen to them regularly at first)

I regularly have the Avalanche Theme stuck in my head. It’s not a super great track compared to some other epic ones, but it flows well, and I like it perhaps more than I should

I enjoyed what they did, soundwise, with Under The Rotting Pizza. I think it captured nicely the uniqueness of the original track

As for Jessie’s Theme, I like it, just as I enjoyed her role being fleshed out. It was all a nice addition

On the other hand, Leslie’s Theme bluesy approach kinda brings me back to some of the stuff on the FFXV OST more than anything on the original FFVII OST

Yeah, I also like how some old themes got blended together. I was pleasantly caught off-guard most times and enjoyed it

FF7 is my favorite game soundtrack of all time, and the remake exceeds on every level. Where else can you listen to this much BADASSERY? The added chorus midway gives me goosebumps every time I hear it!

Those are some very good songs!

As for Hollow, I prefer a thousand time its instrumental counterpart ‘Hollow Skies’

I usually waste a lot of time in sector 5 so I can listen to it in-game. It might be new, but it fits the ost like it’s always been there

The two ost are different.
The original tries to fit the tone of the game, the other is just an orchestral take of the original.



Fits right into Biohazard, all you need is naked zombies walking through Shinra HQ.



Good, doesn't even come close to the horror the original emanates.
