The first continent alone could be Witcher 3 levels of big. We don't know.

Optimism might seem foolish to people used to being disappointed by Square, but what they have shown us so far all looks amazingly well done. This one announcement isn't going to diminish the quality of what we've seen nor is it going to take a FULL FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE away from us, which is better to get piecemeal than not at all. I'm just trying to look at the bright side of things.

Here's my crazy stance that I'd hope fellow GAF members would agree with me on:

I would rather wait longer or pay more for a complete gaming experience rather than this season pass bullshit.

2016 is a huge year for both Square-Enix and games in general. We're getting FF15. FF7R wouldn't be out until 2017+ anyway.

I would easily pay $89.99-99.99 for a multi-BD package.

So, then, why is this different than just waiting until all of them are out at once?

Because they can create the game as one whole cohesive experience. That materia I pick up early on I can level up and use at the end-game. I don't have to think about missing items or materia in side quests or caves that are handed out to players who jumped in at Episode 3 or 4 and were given as baseline gear for the sake of balance. I can participate in chocobo breeding as early as possible without worrying about how players are automatically getting end-game chocobos for starting at the end. I want my time investment to be reflected, and having items carry over between episodes is not the same experience.

I won't have to be concerned with fan feedback or bad sales or changes in leadership between episodes. I'll know I'm either getting the entire game or I'm not getting it.

Every step of this game's status press releases have left me going "This isn't what we asked for.", and at some point, enough is enough.
 
What is the point in this being episodic outside of money?

We know what happens, so the "cliffhanger" elements or breaks aren't going to be "cliffhangers" for the vast majority of people.

Episodic gaming, for me, doesn't work anyway and no one has ever made it work properly because the release dates are all over the place, but when the narrative is already widely known? What's the point? I get to the end of "episode 1" and I still know the rest of the narrative.

Just make the bloody game.
 
What if S-E see here a good business, selling to lot of us the game twice (episode by episode and final disc version) and encourage them to remake other Final Fantasy titles?

Probably many just overreacting. It could very well be broken down like the PS1 era FF games- 3 to 4 discs, which wouldn't be a big deal. Except we will have to wait for the following episodes.

Quit CoD and BF after Ghosts and 4, and will write off any other developer that I feel is taking advantage of my money and/or time.

FFXIII was a complete experience, with a full story (beginning, middle and end). So were XIII-2 and Lightning Returns. Each game being 30 to 50 hours. FFVII is one game that is around 45 hours.

The XIII trilogy also managed to give us fan favorite beloved character Lightning who's had nearly as many appearances in games now as Cloud. No need to drag that underrated trilogy into this Episodic Remake MESS.

Part 1 will have no open world whereas part 2 and 3 will have the world map or w/e they have for it. Maybe this could let them get out part 1 really quickly. Also Part 2/3 they could just leave Midgar completely out of it.

Stop it with your reasonable logic. We just have to accept this because thats just how things are according to some people.
 
If this is due to lack of manpower: then if SE made FF7 as one game and released FFXV and that was all for this gen, I would be good.
 
As long as we get the entirety of FFVII, and they don't skip any areas between episodes, then I don't think this is too bad. The last thing I want is for there to be some comic you read before every episode which details the parts they decided to skip.
 
Huh. Well, that sounds unfortunate.

Best case is now to hope for the game to still be a good recreation of the original, and to try and wait for the compilation at the end. I don't think I could stand to wait x years between pieces; pieces that I'm sure they'll charge near full price for.

I remember ff7's world was fairly directed until near the end when you got the airship, so it could still work. I just hope this isn't used as a way to cut out the world map or other content.
 
So let me get this straight, this is without question the most talked about and wanted game for as long as I've been a member of NeoGAF, yet even the mere possibility of paying more for it overall than a regular game is a potential deal breaker? After all this time?
 
ok so this is not relevant per se ,but Revelations 2 was the best RE game in ages and it was episodic.

It had more exploration than RE5 and 6(which were mammoth AAA "complete" releases)

I agree, but we have no idea which form this will take. Might just be 3 physical 50-hour RPGs (I wish.)
 
Square just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase FFVIIR or any episodes, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market wit this move.

Square, publicly apologize and make FFVIIR one game or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Has there ever been an episodic JRPG? Am I'm not talking Xeno Saga (just call the sequels episodes). I mean break a story into multiple other titles and sell them separately.
 
You had one job SE. The game itself actually looks fucking great.

But then the day after the trailer comes out you find some way to eff it up with cutting the game into 3 pieces.

Or just don't release such an ambiguous press release in the first place.

You didn't quote my second half of the post, which was the part that actually mattered.

You have every right to be super upset at this, I'll admit I got upset about stuff we see in games, but until we get more info on how this is handled, there is absolutely nor reason to make posts bridled with complete paranoia and anger.

Jump Festa is in two weeks, and if enough fuss is raised, we might see that info sooner.

So until then, I don't think making 80 posts going "OH FUCK OH FUCK SE/NOMURA AT IT AGAIN FUCK." is anything but "negativity" in of itself.

The best we can do is discuss and present arguments and come up with reasons on their motivations for this, if it's possible to remake FF7 in its entirety this day and age etc.
 
I'm okay with episodic if needed but..... what does this actually mean! Is it linear or can i explore? Is the story going to be cut to shreds, is this going to be 13 again? Can I get my ass on a fucking airship and fucking travel back to a city I was at earlier! FUCK FUCK FUCK i'm scared!!!!!

I think it will be better than the original.

My issue is that playing FFVII so many times over the years and then reaching a point in the story where it says "To be continued".

That's a buzzkill honestly.

FF 13 trilogy is pretty much considered to be a huge let down. And working on 13-2 and 13-3 DID take resources away - big time. FF 13 came out in 2009. We are nearing SEVEN years without a new mainline title, thanks to the fucking trilogy (and that stupid MMO).

I didn't give two shits about square, they lost my faith with the whole fucking FF 13 trilogy (and the game itself). A FF 7 remake was all I ever wanted. They showed it to me, only to now take it away from me. I wouldn't have cared if they had never shown it to me, but this way is just utterly disgusting. And that fucking half sentence is really flat out INSULTING to me. The knew it is utter shit, but they hid it consciously. They let my hype build up only to now break me apart. That's the biggest problem here.
 
I guess many people here didn't played RE Revelations 2 to see that the episodic format can work in traditional games.

For everyone that was going to buy the full game, this changes nothing. For everyone else, they can start and see if they like before committing to a full purchase.

It's also uncertain how long we will wait between each part. Could be a week, a month or several months. I doubt SE will keep the episodes apart for too long to avoid people finishing one and not returning later.

If anyone here doubts SE can do episodic right, I question if you ever believed they could make this remake right, episodic or not.
