There have been a handful of free login periods, but at the same time, they're not very common either. Typically, they coincide with some other major event happening - the release of Rhapsodies, just prior to the end of PS2/360 support, this year's anniversary event, and so on.
Ah, I see. Thanks for letting me know.
How often do they do the free login periods? This isn't the first one, is it?
Anyways, I've restarted playing during the free period with the expressed purpose of getting to 99 and finally finishing some story-based content, and I was able to finally complete Divine Might after all these years, along with the rest of the Zilart missions. Also finished up apocalypse nigh, so I've moved onto wotg now. Also took my trusts up to max and that's Just made going through story mode so much fun.
And being able to quick travel through HP points and survival guides? So convenient!
And the records of Eminence? Very nice! Spent quite a while checking things off I did in the past.
Man, I'm really enjoying being able to finally be able to see the story-based content at my own lesiure without having to really search for parties that are on the same mission or to wait for people to get ready.
Like I said before in my quoted post, I started doing wotg missions, but instead of doing a few of them here or there, I decided to do make the most of my remaining trial period and take it even further: marathon the shit out of Wings of The Goddess from mission 2 (where I left off so I could get access to campaigning), all the way to the end. thankfully, It was a long weekend so I had free time. One of the biggest regrets I ever had during my time playing FFXI was not being able to play and complete the majority of the storylines the game had to offer (I finished Promathia and the nation missions for Bastok).
I had previously chosen Windurst as my nation during the campaign (i'm pretty sure it was because I wanted gear for my dnc at the time), so i decided to stick with it. Boy, I sure am glad I did. I really enjoyed the storyline that played out for me. And since I did nothing else but do mission and quests only related to the storyline, everything was still very fresh in my mind. It also didn't hurt that I had begun wearing the level 117 gear, and when packed with 5 trusts, made pretty short work of boss fights, allowing me to proceed through the story in a quick manner. The only real issue I had was with the very final fight (one of the enemies kept casting doom).
There were a bunch of times where I didn't think I'd be able to do it. For example; I had to go back to the present and complete a bunch of regular windy quests just to get a Rhinostery Certificate to give me access to Toraimarai Canal which would give me backdoor access to Inner Horototo Ruins for a 5 second cut-scene. There was an underground mission where you had to detonate bombs which quickly became irritating to do over and over again. I also had to stay up quite late into the night as I ran and warped my way around the different areas of the game.
Quick Travelling is such a godsend. I would not have been able to do it otherwise. I was also really glad I was really into campaign battles back when I played it regularly. I had a ton of allied points so I just used that to warp around the places I needed to get to fast. and thank you to whomever decided to bring the warp ring into the game. holy crap, I used the shit out of that ring. I also did luck out on a couple of occasions and had key items I needed for completing a quest already sitting in my inventory for years (bottled pixie and a testimony for one particular quest).
I wouldn't recommend doing what I did (there was a time-limit in my case), but I have no regrets about doing it. It was a great FF experience for me.
If there's another Free login period, I might try completing Aht Urghan next! haha
