Glad to see they are fixing some of the oldest quests in the game. There still a lot of them that are ridiculously annoying for no reason at all, though.

Next time I'll have an account, I'll should probably write some.

... but still no Coalition nerf. Fuckers.

Can I do any of the required prereqs for Oboro JSE equipment solo (AKA w/ Trusts only)?

https://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Oboro

I need a Priwen badly. All the High Tier stuff seems to be ilvl119 content though and I'm just barely 117 with the RoE gear.

I would try to get a group for Ambuscade normal, this month in particular is easy compared to previous months. The cost of failure is lowest out of the bunch, as well.

You can probably get it done with 3+trusts. Solo might be tough considering the adds.

It may be possible to do HKCNM Difficult solo with trusts? If you're on Sylph, my wife and I can get you a clear of that or a HTBF, if you like.

If you guys wanna set something up on a tuesday night that we can just make it the event too. There was interest in Sacred battlefields the other day actually, people need papers, etc.

If anyone wants to get geared up please do come around Tuesday nights and say stuff in ls often, especially after 8 pm when folks are actually around. Can also ask the regulars for discord info so you can find help easier when folks are out of game.

Hey guys,

New player here, been playing the game for a day or so and I'm looking for some advice.

I'm up to lv29 with my red mage, things have been going well, I have over 10K sparks, which sorts my gear out for leveling at least. I got some great trusts like Tenzen / Abenzio and I've amassed a couple of thousand gil.

But I'm at a bit of a cross roads, I originally intended to stay as Red mage just to get to lv30 (I thought having a sub job with spells would be handy) with the intention of unlocking Beast Master, but now I'm not so sure, even the early black magic spells seem to hit way harder than anything I can do with a sword (and I'm using the best spark sword my level can get)

Beast Master looks cool and my main goal is to get through as much content as possible and see as much of the world as I can within the 30 free days. From the research I've done; playing BST with trusts is the absolute best way to tour the games content (even if they are not that popular in groups) but I've kind of become attached to my RDM.

However, there are a few obstacles to my enjoyment of RDM, while I thought having white / black magic would be great, as it happens it actually makes getting spells very, very expensive. I'm learning now that I may have been better off starting as a thief then going BST.

Based on what I'm trying to achieve (see as much as possible, as easily as possible) do you think I should stick with RDM or just go ahead and change to BST? I'd hate to get to level 70 as a RDM and then find myself flat broke when I could cruising be as a BST

When I returned and started from scratch I did RDM to 99 and was fine even broke and missing a lot of spells. Remember that sparks/accolades easily convert to petty cash. Make sure you keep up your mission progress, particularly Rhapsodies, so you get the multipliers on accolades.

BSTs do get parties, but they're not the flavor of the month anymore so you'd need to start your own groups.

If you're on Sylph and need help, check the spreadsheet in the OP for familiar names, get pearled, etc.

Change to BST and keep RDM as your sub. You'll be fine. Trusts and fast travel/mounts make the game so friendly to explore now. Ideally if you take BST to a higher level, SCH is really good as a subjob because you can get free MP through one of it's abilities. Ninja is also good as a subjob, and Dancer is a must. All of it's abilities cost TP instead of MP, so you pretty much always have those resources, and free sneak/invisible once you get it to 25.

RDM is one of the starter jobs with access to Sneak and Invisible, which is really handy is you want to see as much of the world as possible, so it's worth getting the job to at least level 49 so it can be a subjob for any other job you favor.

Those spells, like several others, can be acquired as drops from some mobs - the FFXIDB.com site is pretty handy to see what can be acquired in that manner, from which mobs, what the odds of the drop are for which, and where in the maps to find them. As an example, for Sneak and Invisible:
http://ffxidb.com/items/4745
http://ffxidb.com/items/4744

You can get by without having every spell now that parties aren't that critical at low/mid levels, and if you keep recurring Records of Eminence objectives set, especially some that match whatever you're doing at any given time, you can accumulate a fair amount of sparks - and that currency is often used to get gil by using it to get Acheron Shields and then selling those to NPCs, which sjould help with spell scrolls.

I was expecting some more pics or info about the mobile version at E3 but we got nothing :(

Yea I was right there with you. I kept looking for FFXI related news. I really hope they do the game justice on mobile, I would absolutely be in day 1 if it's good.

Thanks for the great advice everyone, especially the stuff about the rhapsodies, some of those quest rewards look crazy.

Do those exp bonuses stack? Do I have to activate them or are they a passive kind of thing. I think I'd least be able to get up to rhapsodie white at my current lv, but what about rhapsody crimson, is that doable at lv30? I think I'll take RDM a little further, after all BST leveling will be a doddle with those exp bonuses.

The Rhapsodies key item rewards are passive bonuses, no need to do anything specific after you've completed the relevant missions.

Yes, it appears that way, there's still a lot of stuff I need to do just to get the first one though, getting to the city of Norg looks like an epic quest in itself lol

Apparently I have to run around the world farming these keys in various dungeons or pay like 140k gil to get a bloody airship pass.

You can cheat your way to Norg nowadays using Rhapsodies. I don't think I ever got Airship pass to Khazam when I re-started on Sylph lol.

Just do the first questline (the one with the pollens) and they'll warp you there.

Check the AH for spells, it's generally cheaper. Also you can avoid the most expensive ones like Warp, Teleport, etc. They are either kinda useless noways or you can just Quest them (Fame has been buffed, it takes 30 minutes to Quest Warp or Teleport Holla)

You can sell sparks gears for gil, the conversion rate is something like 1:10. So the 2500 sparks Shield becomes 25k gil.

BST is fine for group content, but if you objective is to just "see as much as you can" just level the job you want/like. Any job can solo its way to 99 these days thanks to trusts. At this point SMN and BST don't have much more solo potential than, say, WHM, on their way to 99. Anything goes, really.

Also don't worry too much, you don't risk "screwing" yourself by leveling a job you don't like.

Check RoE---->Tutorial for additional trusts if you didn't already.

Also always check RoE when you complete a mission (Mission category, iirc). They give you permanent exp bonuses.

For anything else be sure to ask, FFXI can be a bit intimidating. :)

I'm also eyeing the Steam Sale, I'm wondering how much can be reasonably completed within the 30 day period? Assuming I have ~10 dedicated days of playtime (weekends/long weekend) plus about an hour on weekdays. I played through the base FFXIV but dropped it a while ago, would love to see the game that started it for the franchise and why people speak so fondly of it.

It's not something I've tried, as my one character is older, but with some focused effort in the very least getting through the nation mission path up to 5-2 and Chains of Promathia seems viable, with some Rhapsodies of Vana'diel along the way - that should get you more bang for your buck as a shorter experience, as all nation missions converge by 5-2 as Castle Zvahl (they diverge back into their own stories after that), and CoP is superior to Zilart, which precedes it (although completing both opens a quest and battle that provides some closure to both).

It seems possible to do more, so this is more of a recommended focus, as those are closer to the "heart" that XI's setting was built around.

Level 99, Rank 6, Zilart Missions and some fraction of Rhapsodies should be easily fit in that time frame. You might want help here and there, so find a busy server or active linkshell. The heart of XI has always been the story.

I keep telling myself that I will reinstall one day and finish CoP & WotG.

You should. I just finished CoP for my son. It can be done solo in a day, though he had done Three Paths himself. WotG can be done in a weekend.

Fast travel has made these missions far easier than when I did them long ago.

They're introducing a paid service for extra gear storage, up to 2 more wardrobes applicable to all accounts: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/envi/wardrobe/index.html

I'm curious to see what'll happen to gear left in there if the payments stop, but it's a least a more elegant system than mules, let's see how it goes...

I'm also going to take it as a good sign that they're apparently introducing this through the account management website and not PlayOnline - the less things in the game depend on that, the better, and this does look like a different enough implementation to things we've seen in the past... but maybe I'm just hopeful the underlying infrastructure is getting looked at and maybe updated along the way. The sooner people curious about the game are relieved of having to deal with PlayOnline and its slow updates, the fewer firs impressions of the game are tainted...

I imagine it'll be the same as the Mog Locker from Aht Urghan: once your time runs out you can't access the gear until you re-up the payments.

Is Yoshi-p also directing FFXI now?

This is actually a practical issue, not aesthetical stuff referencing previous games people liked.

AFAIK Yoshida has no direct involment in XI other than running SE's Division 5, which runs the company's online game division - which likely means XIV gets the bulk of resources, since he's so heavily associated with that game. At this point I'll be glad if he inflict no detriments on the game.

While I guess it's better than mules in terms of utility, having that be a recurring fee leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.

Now that Login Campaigns are generally worthless I see a lot of people cancelling mules to offset the cost of Ward 3+4

I wonder if this is mostly a way to get people to cut down on mules to make it simpler to assess how many "real" characters exist per server (which in turn may help to plan any future server merges)... technically mules are cheaper, which is the weird bit, but it must be a huge hassle to switch between characters to manage inventory issue, and I guess that based on the way the diagram presented it, it's mostly worth it to people who have multiples... but does anyone even maintain 2 or 3 mules nowadays?...

There's an easier way to do that and get a useful ballpark number - just exclude any characters that have no jobs above level 1. I'd wager that most pure mules are never leveled in any way at all, so it should be close enough.

As for mules, I have 15 currently, but will be cutting that down after the bonanza, since login campaigns are garbage now. (Obviously most of them aren't there for storage reasons at all, but were added when login campaigns were legitimately useful.)

When are Bonanza results, by the way? Winning an Idris would be a great incentive to come back lol.

Not soon enough:

Winning numbers announced: Friday, July 15, 2016, at 1:00 a.m. (PDT)
Collection period: from Friday, July 15, 2016, at 1:00 a.m. (PDT) to Sunday, July 31 at 7:59 a.m. (PDT)

New director been slippin lately.

I can't say I'm a fan of his direction at all. The way Ambuscade, Master Trial and the new Seekers of Adoulin quests were handled all left me shaking my head. Now this monthly fee for extra mog wardrobes? I'd have preferred a one time purchase and even that would have been slightly annoying for a game with a relatively high monthly fee.

Keep in mind that FFXI probably has a skeleton crew at this point. Considering what a mess the game is in term of coding/content/engine limitations, I'd say he did pretty good job.

Bleeding the hardcore fans still left playing for even more money now? Just for some more inventory? *shakes head*

That is ridiculous SE.

PlayOnline is one of the most infuriating things I've come across in recent memory.

Edit: Gaaah, it won't log me in. Keeps saying incorrect PlayOnline ID or Password. I tried linking my Square Enix account, I tried getting rid of it and nothing is working.

And that damn background music went from charming to a piss off.

Did you try SE support? They can fix password problem for you.

Two way street sister! I just forget to open irc sometimes :p

I've heard that the story in this game is great, but I only ever played the trial back in 2009 and found myself very lost at the time.

Is it worth picking up to blast through the story? I might stick around afterwards.
