Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age |OT| You Had One Job!

I'm starting to remember why I stopped like 11 years ago. It's early but I still can't gel with this battle system doesn't help feel like the party attacks way faster than I can but I guess that's just for now

Is this party looking okay?

Vaan – Bushi – Shikari
Penelo – Monk – Black Mage
Basch – Knight - Foebreaker
Balthier – Red Battlemage -Machinist
Fran – Archer – Time Battlemage
Ashe – White Mage -Uhlan

I don't care about having it be super optimised I just chose what I thought seemed good but tbh I don't know much about the jobs since this is my first time playing.

Does this have any glaring errors or is it ok?

Depends on your weapon, your speed and your overall stats. You can also get up to three license by character that boost your action speed. If you're that impatient when you start attacking just turn on 4x speed, things dies in seconds, the definition of a non issue. (Make sure you don't die at 4x speed it can happen quickly :p )

And you can also turn the battle speed to the maximum in the options menu.

This is exactly why the battle system works the way it does.

You shouldn't be thinking about "attacks" as manual actions like they are in other FF games. You should instead think about reacting to status effects, managing buffs/debuffs, adjusting overall strategy on the fly, drawing enemies' fire by moving the characters they're targeting, slowing down enemies by moving characters out of range, etc.

Whether the party can or can't attack faster than you can shouldn't even be a question on your mind.

Would a party of

Ashe - Samurai/Knight
Fran - Archer/Red Mage
Penelo - Black Mage/Monk

be able to do the endgame (Espers, Yiazmat, etc)?

That would work, pretty much any combination works, all these bosses have been killed by a single character instead of three, people like challenging themselves, some combo makes it easier than other but you can't make a choice that will prevent you from killing them.

I'm also feeling the anxiety lol. Really want to not screw myself over haha.

I started with the JP voice track out of curiosity and immediately recognized Basch as Kiritsugu Emiya. And looking at the JP voice actor list, I'm seeing Gabranth is played by Solid Snake and Cid is voiced by Big Boss. I'm definitely sticking with the track now.

So what would be a good way to bring your lagging characters up to speed level-wise? Just have a party of 2 strong characters, one weak and keep swapping out the weak one?

It's a long time since I've played XII, is there any loot items which I should avoid selling? Besides the obvious ones like teleport stones which are bizarrely listed in that category.

I haven't seen the parallels mentioned yet, but FFXII is basically the Yokai Watch 3 battle system with more freedom of movement: less about individual actions and more around managing your surroundings.

Ok. Got over any job picking anxiety. Got into the flow of things and damn it feels great to be back with a single player FF. one I've never played so it feels brand new. Know nothing about the story going in.

Also feels good knowing that the Ivalice raid in FF14 is coming up soon.

FFXII's OST honestly continues to be the one that gives me the biggest smile whenever I hear it. Even though it's one of the more recent FF games, the nostalgia I feel for it is something else. Only a couple of hours in but I find myself humming nearly every tune. Going to have a hell of a time with this remaster.

So far I'm rocking Vaan/Shikari and Penelo/Monk. Seemed like the right choices thematically and also build wise, they seem to be good entry jobs. Am I right in thinking this?

Edit: Nice, just seen iosefe's post.

Got the normal version via BB and debating if I want the steel version from Amazon now that it is back in stock...problem is I don't know if I want to wait till Friday night to get the Amazon version in. Probably just going to say screw the steelcase and play the normal version...if it wasn't the same price I wouldn't even be having this problem.

I thought it would be fun to write a small guide to compliment this one from GFaqs a lot of people here seem to be using. That guide is a bit older now and since then new amazing combinations have been found (mainly Shikari/Red Mage). I put most combinations under characters so you can mix and match your party more easily.

Vaan – Can pull off any job thanks to high stats everywhere. A lot of people like him as Shikari though for ‘canon' reasons.
  • Shikari/Foebreaker – DPS (genji gloves) + Breaks. Big con is that it has no magic (therefore suits Bash and Balthier better).
  • Shikari/White Mage – Nearly invincible tank with healing.
  • Shikari/Red Mage – Tank+Black Magic+support spells. Jack of all trades and mostly great at them all (makes for an amazing ‘leader character'). Penelo and Ashe are also great with this one.
  • Pretty much any job combination (can use any of the ones below)

Balthier – Best as a katana user, but a lot of people like him as Machinist.
  • Machinist/White Mage – Healer/support that uses gun on downtime (better used by others because Balthier isn't a great mage).
  • Machinist/Uhlan – Gunner that can hit all weaknesses and is able to dish out big damage.
  • Shikari/Foebreaker – See Vaan list above.
  • Bushi job (see below).

Bash – Best as a katana user, but a lot of people like him as Uhlan (he's fastest with spears too).
  • Uhlan/Archer – Can use both jobs very effectively, gives a ranged option + use of many item lores.
  • Shikari/Foebreaker – See Vaan list above.
  • Bushi job (see below)

Ashe – Has the best magic stat in the game, but can also work with physical jobs because she also has decent strength.
  • Knight/Time Mage – Healing (with espers) + Time Magic + decent damage. Makes good use of her stats.
  • Uhlan/Time Mage – Decent with spears and can use that time magic effectively.

Ashe/Penelo can both do these jobs very well. Fran can do them too, but not as great.
  • Black Mage/Monk – All HP lores making your Mage tanky + ultimate Holy spell. Only con is that the 16 battle lores Monk has mostly go to waste.
  • Black Mage/Archer – Access to all item lores for emergency support + some extra HP lores.
  • Black Mage/Machinist – Same benefits as archer with a few less item lores. Access to some late game time magic.
  • White Mage/Time Mage – Ultimate support character, but perhaps not enough gambit slots to use it efficiently.
  • Black Mage/Red Mage – Ultimate Ardor (fire) spell, but a lot of overlap and only 2 swiftness.

Fran – Probably best as a damage dealer with poles (she's the fastest with that weapon), but a lot of people like her as a Red Mage and Archer for canon reasons.
  • Red Mage/Archer – Good utility for most of the game and an endgame combo with burning bow+ardor.
  • Red Mage/Machinist – Effective user of measures, allowing for amazing evasion. Access to Dark Shot + Black Robe combo.
  • Monk/Foebreaker – Allows you to use Kanya+Genji Gloves, nearly as strong as the Bushi alternative (you can have both though).

Bushi gets the strongest weapon in the game (Kumbha), which makes it the best DPS class. There are lots of useful combinations with it. All of them are best used with Bash, Balthier and Vaan. Ashe can do well too with the ones that use magic.
  • Bushi/Knight – Allows the Bushi to use some healing spells. Heavy Armor + 10 battle lores. Access to strong Excalibur combo.
  • Bushi/Uhlan – Very strong in terms of DPS because of Heavy Armor + 13 battle lores.
  • Bushi/Monk – The strongest one with in terms of DPS with 16 battle lores and access to Heavy Armors through an Esper. Allows Bushi to use Curaja + great support spells.
  • Bushi/Foebreaker – Breaks of course, but also Heavy Armor + 12 battle lores.
  • Bushi/Shikari – Ultimate Yiazmat killer, but besides that not as great.

Whatever you pick, another thing to keep in mind is that you get two Genji Gloves in this game. That's the equipment that allows you to do combo attacks for insane physical damage in the endgame. Only Bushi, Knight and Foebreaker have access to the Genji license. Besides that you want a weapon with a good combo rate. Kumbha (katana) is the best one for that, followed closely by Kanya (pole). Vrscika (hammer) and Mesa (ninja blade) are also good. It's just something to keep in mind while dividing up jobs. Monk for example could use a subjob with a genji license to use the Kanya efficiently.

There are a lot of other decent combinations, but I just tried to focus of some of the better ones. Keep in mind you can finish the endgame with literally any combination and that you should pick whatever you think would be fun. Still, here are some combinations with bad synergy you should probably avoid: Machinist/Archer, Machinist/Time Mage, Samurai/White Mage, Black Mage/White Mage, Knight/White Mage and Foebreaker/Uhlan, Knight/Red Mage

Good man the JP track is infinitely superior to the EN one.

Just played for an hour, maybe two hours after getting it earlier today. Taking my time, just running through town and talking to everybody. Love the art direction, world-building and setting so far. It basically feels like Star Wars in a high fantasy desert setting. What a magical place.

Make sure to turn battle to Active mode and max speed.

Without those, the game was kinda cancer. But it's a lot better with it.

For those interested here's a list I found online that list all the rare game mobs in order (lowest to highest level) since there's a trophy where you need the full bestiary, figured someone would like it:

I hate this job system, why can't I do w/e the hell I want. This aint the same game I loved on ps2, now I'm here 20mins into the game thinking hard because now I have to decide whos is going to be who. Hate stuff like this. I just want my balthier with a Masamune and genji gloves like I had back in the day... Is it still possible? Im already being put off by the game, and this was one of my favorite games ever back in the day.

Bushi gets access to Katana and you can subclass into Knight, Foebreaker, or Shikari for Genji gloves.

Thanks for the overview. What do you think of a setup that gives Genji Gloves to Monk and Bushi, and Jackboots to Shikari?

Would probably be something like:

Balthier as Shikari/Foebreaker
Basch as Knight/Bushi
Fran as Monk/Bushi or Monk/Foebreaker

Taking advantage of Fran's best pole attack speed, Balthier's best dagger and ninja sword attack speed, and Basch's best katana, 1H and 2H sword attack speed.

I'd round out the rest with something like:

Ashe as White Mage/Time Mage
Penelo as Black Mage/Monk
Vaan as Red Mage/Black Mage or Red Mage/Archer

Done let's see how it goes
I see you big dinosaur but im sure I can't beat ya lol nope

Yeah best not to touch him yet. Btw the attack thing feels a little better as you get further into the game since you start getting multi attacks more regularly. I dunno what actually causes that, maybe gear or something but I'm already getting regular 3-4 attack chains and pretty early on still.

I panicked and made Fran a Time Mage. I feel like I fucked up my game already.

I personally hate the pressure from the licence system but like the overall effect it has on the game. Decided to go with the cannon classes for their first licence and from there will swap the others around to suit my team. Right now it's looking like I'll be rocking a girl power party of 3 for most of the game since the guys can't heal for shit on their cannon paths.

That definitely works if you don't mind doubling up on jobs. Personally, I like Bushi/Uhlan and Monk/Foebreaker. My Genji users are likely to be under berserk and have little use for magic. Using the Shikari/Red Mage combo because I think it's great and it still does decent damage with jackboots.

He is indeed but y'know something actually struck me last night that I'd never thought of before. Had Vaan and Penelo not been in the game it would have felt even more at odds with itself due to the upbeat pleasant music. As much as I prefer any of the other 4 I've come around to them a bit as a result.

I was trying to envision the first 4 hours of the game without them and I couldn't make it work in my head

Anyways, Red Mage is actually a good choice for Yiazmat, since it learns Darkga and can hit its Darkness weakness a ton. (Slap the Zeus Mace on them for more hilarity) A Shikari is also good with Yagyu Darkblade for the same reason.

The game has 12 classes but I feel like I'm seeing 20 different class names on forums and guides. No idea what a Hunter or Samurai translates to in this new version, for example

Hunter = Shikari. Samurai = Bushi.

Bushi is the one with access to the Genji license, together with Knight and Foebreaker. Shikari doesn't have it, but can use Germinas Boots (Jackboots) instead.

'enry 'ollins
Just finished the prologue.

Being older definitely helps appreciate the setup here. The job system additions should hopefully fix the biggest gameplay issue I had -- the license board. I just wish they did something about the Mist attacks. IIRC they pretty much felt like slot machines with a speed element to them -- faster rerolls = more chance of chaining.

I don't remember enjoying the music so much. It was odd though, when Penelo's theme kicked in, even though I haven't heard it in nearly a decade, I had a stupid grin on my face.

Eeeeeeh I'm pretty much happy with with everyone except Ashe as Uhlan/Breaker... Otherwise I think I have a nice balance between lore and optimization.

Vaan: Shikari/Time Mage
Penelo: Monk/Black Mage
Basch: Bushi/Knight
Balthier: Machinist/White Mage
Fran: Archer/Red Mage

... Maybe I'll switch Ashes Breaker with Vaans Time Mage...

Went ahead and got a digital copy, downloading now. This will be my go to game when I want a distraction from FFXIV. I see many posts about making sure certain characters have a specific job. I had planned certain jobs for each person but now I'm rethinking this due to reading over the thread lol. But, once I start playing I'll probably just assign jobs based on how I envision what each character should be, lore be damned.

If this ends up working....Well...hell yeah haha. But thing is I want to use the other 3 as my "main" endgame party. I'm just afraid Red Mage won't be a good enough healer for the big bosses. I don't care for optimal builds here. Just to know that my Girl Power team can go through the endgame.
