Btw returning to the first minutes of the game, it's surprising the amount of details they've been able to put in those in-engine cutscenes. The first one didn't have anything spectacular as in this opening sequence. I'm really impressed, and the engine seems to be stable too.

Saw dozens of copies of the game sitting piled up in a sales wagon behind an open door in an Akihabara game shop when I went in today -- the displays are all set up and I imagine that the employees will be setting things up as soon as the store closes tonight.
Also grabbed the FFXIII-2 World Preview book; couldn't resist. It's a very handsomely-made book this time; fold-out covers, big posters, etc.; quite a step up from the money-grabbish one they made for the original FFXIII, and well worth the purchase price.
On the inside front cover is a long passage in Cocoon writing and in English, which, being a big fan of in-game writing systems, I can just about read at sight (even though I haven't touched FFXIII in a long time). It says:
Three years after the events in FINAL FANTASY 13, Lightning has gone missing, and Snow is nowhere to be found. In a rebuilding world, Serah notices that something is amiss. After a fortuitous encounter with a mysterious man named Noel, the two set off to find Lightning.
(They changed five years into three at some point? And 17- (of course) year-old Noel qualifies as a "man"? And come on, SE, stop writing the name of your games in ALL CAPITALS all the time. Show some respect for English orthography!)
Got it. I had feared that they changed five to three so that previously-14-year-old Hope would then be 17, the magic age that SE seems to consider the only valid one when it comes to protagonists.
Still not sure what to expect in comparison to FFXIII, even with what I've read and seen, but I'm willing to take the risk to find out.
Not like I didn't like FFXIII, was just not expecting the sequel so soon after, thought they needed more time to make a fully fleshed RPG. It may no longer be linear, but if it's mostly focused on 2 characters, that is a bit disappointing too.
Got CE pre-ordered, I have some amount of faith in SE.
I'll watch trailers, but won't watch live streams, I'd rather wait for the game to release. I'm replaying XIII too, but off and on, cause some of the difficulty is pissing me off. Like right now I'm at:
Barthanduls #2 in Oreba village. I did better than my first attempt, got him under half, then got KO'd by doom. I'm going to say he has to be debuffed now, or there is no way I can damage him faster.
Sure wish I could remember my 360 play through years ago. I really hate this battle. I guess you have to use Fang for this one.
^Equip Rainbow Anklets, as they protect you from Daze. My strategy is to go in with Sabs first then attack him til stagger, switch to sent when he does his ultimate attack and heal when necessary.

You're better off trying to put out as much damage as you can during his Thanatos laughter or whatever it's called. If you hit him hard enough then the attack does less damage or gets cancelled as far as I recall.
Flipping through the World Preview book and there's some interesting stuff in here.
(Spoilers, I suppose, for the very beginning of the game, but keep in mind that this boko went on sale two weeks before the game did, so it's not giving away too much.)
* Serah's chestplate says SAECULA PRORA. "Saecula" means "ages" and "prōra" means the prow of a ship, or the boat itself. It doesn't seem to be inflected correctly, though "ship of ages" might make some sense. The alphabets in this game aren't an easter egg anymore; they really want you to learn them and they introduce the Cocoon one right there in the book.
* Her sword also has writing on it: LONGE LATEQUE AETATUM. ("the width and breadth of generations"?)
* The amusement park "Xanadu" will evidently be "Serendipity" in English. Why change it? We English speakers know about Xanadu; the Khan's pleasure dome being there and all. Supposedly it doesn't belong to any particular age; the casino is there and it was designed with FF7's Gold Saucer in mind. (The numerals on the slot machines contain Etro alphabet numerals, for what that's worth. Some kind of heavenly alternate dimension?)
* Academia is the name of the beautiful futuristic city with neon all over the palce, and what we're seeing is 400 years in the future. Many of the companies who advertised all over Eden and Cocoon in the original game have their logos unchanged, BTW.
* Anybody else catch that there are now six digits in characters' HP totals? Waif-like Serah might have ten times the physical stamina as Lightning and Snow?
* You can give names to the monsters you recruit, but only from a list of pre-set possibilities. The cat-like monster in one screenshot gets very insipid childish pet-oriented ones indeed. I pity the translators who have to find English for these.

I remember one of the recent videos from SE showed a battle with Snow as a Guest NPC, and he Potion'd himself for something like 12,000 or 120,000 HP.
Sounds like some Disgaea-like character building may be possible.
Dunan, I'll look at that Latin a little later and see what I can make of it when I actually get some sleep.
I've thought about it a little, and I realized... hey, I thought the battle system in FFXIII looked great from the livestream, and also based on the demo I bought for it (kind of; I forgave it a little because it wasn't the current build), but then when I finally played the game I didn't really care about battling or the enemies because it was boring until three very late-postgame mission battles and the Bart battles. :/
I hope that what I've seen so far translates into how I feel when I actually play it.
Looking forward to impressions, Kagari! The story still seemed kind of meh.
I'm super-sleepy, so this is "really damn tired and surviving on 2 hours' sleep but I really need a nap" Schala, but I think that song is just hilarious at this point. My bf and I burst out laughing last night upon hearing it.

Try this. Rainbow Anklets help out, btw. But get a full TP gauge prior to starting the battle and I'd highly recommend maxing the Crystarium up until that point. A lot of the battles in FFXIII require pre-prep on your part.
Try a Light/Sazh/Fang party. Sazh for Haste, of course. Actually, stick with a Light/Hope/Fang party for dynamism, and depending on your skill, you might not allocate enough time to buff with Sazh. I tried this with Hope as the party leader and I did fine. You do not need Haste for this. Haste is especially needed for the Chapter 9 battle. We're at the Chapter 11 battle. Defense is needed this time around.
ATK/BLA/DEF - Used to maintain stagger and start stagger up
BLA/BLA/DEF - Switch to this to get stagger up dramatically
BLA/BLA/ATK - Staggered him? Good. Use this if it's safe to do so.
HLR/SYN/DEF - Buff/heal with added help from a Defender
HLR/SYN/COM - Just to buff or heal if you need it. In fact, you can just replace this with another BLA/BLA/ATK to ATB cancel when you've staggered it.
HLR/HLR/DEF - when he uses Thanatosian Laughter or when you need healing desperately
Don't worry too much about the status effects other than having the necessary accessories to protect against them, mostly on your party leader. Stick a Bracelet (one that enhances Magic Defense) if you think you need it on your leader too. When he uses Thanatosian Laughter (ie: when you see the attack name on the screen), switch to HLR/HLR/DEF immediately to reduce damage done to the party. Recall that Defenders always reduce overall damage to the party.
Don't rush to cure all status effects on your party, like... if he inflicts fog on Hope, don't bother curing it because you're not using Hope to physically attack. Same goes for Pain on either Fang or Lightning; don't bother curing it.
When he gets down to casting Doom, don't panic. Instead of taking down the enemy with the first two Optima listed, just switch between ATB cancelling with BLA/BLA/ATK. Don't play it safe unless you really need to. If you think you're low on HP and HLR/HLR/DEF can't cut it fast enough, use Renew (you have room for two casts of Renew with a full TP gauge). Don't bother using Summons because a) they take up too much TP, and b) they take up too much time. Only heal the most important status effects.
And bear in mind, no matter the stage of the fight, whenever he uses Thanatosian Laughter, always switch to an Optima with a Defender (so ATK/BLA/DEF if your Break Gauge is low; BLA/BLA/DEF if it's high enough to nearly stagger it!). Hope that helps!

OK one more question about FF13: What's a good strategy to beat the Blue turtles again? Sorry for asking so many questions >_<
Use a similar strat to a Shaolong Gui while combing it with an Adamantoise strategy to take its legs out (I believe the trophy qualifies for the Long Guis walking around only; it's been a while since I got that trophy, though), but I'd recommend topping up with Offensive Buffing and Defensive Buffing Smokes first, since you might have trouble juggling between buffing and attacking for the first time. Oh, and go in with 5 TP.
Replace Sazh with Snow in my third strategy, and change up his role somewhat. This is because the Long Guis cannot be dazed when it is standing. You can inflict Slow on its head before you even take out its legs, though. It is best to take this on to have an easier time when you have higher-level weapons. I actually did this trophy first when the Long Guis appeared on the Steppe for the first time and it was a bit of an endurance because I think I bit off more than I could chew. I did not have levelled up weapons; I used Tier-1 weapons, believe it or not. You're not after a 5-star rating so don't sweat about doing this efficiently.
I used Smokes to buff the party (and let's bear in mind that I really dislike using Smokes), Fang as the party leader and Snow and Lightning as other members since they have higher stats. Snow is my punching bag. He's there to take damage. Lightning's there to speed things up. Because you're opening with buffs rather than doing the buffing yourself, I'd recommend starting off with something like BLA/BLA/JAM or something like that to take down the legs similar to how you'd take down Adamantoise legs. The legs are weak against poison, but that might take up too much time and might lead into Bay, which you do not want! Rely more on brute strength.
Whenever it attacks--using Ultima, Quake, Bay or even Stomp (ie: when you see its legs move, switch to a Tri-Defender Optima immediately). Never take a chance. These are stronger than the much easier Shaolong Guis. Do bear in mind that Guis are also very unpredictable. I've had one go "Stomp -> Quake -> Bay" before, which was really weird.
Keep a few Elixirs ready for emergencies. You're not going to use them in other battles, so you might as well expend them here. Do not dismantle Doctor's Codes or any other accessories to get those, btw. You might screw yourself out of the Treasure Hunter trophy if you're not careful.
Finally, I would recommend saving your summon for when you need to knock its legs out one final time. You might need to do it 2-3 times, but save the summon for the final time... or if you want... when you've run out of Elixirs and need one final heal. Better to use Bahamut for this.
I realise that wasn't very helpful, but I'm kind of tired right now... :/
Will keep my eyes off all these live streams and intro videos. Once people start receiving their copies, I shall bailout.gif until the English OT hits.
I followed XIII so closely that I ended up knowing how opening chapters would play out beforehand.
Yeah I'm impatient as hell for this game but I refuse to follow live streams of ALMOST any game (other than shooters), don't like to see too much. I require freshness.
Whenever you're ready, Magistra. There's actually one more word after the stuff on her sword that's too small to read. That screenshot is probably as good a close-up as we'll ever get, so the word probably won't be revealed until the Ultimania Omega or something similar.
Speaking of far-too-small-to-see writing, there's some around the minimap too. They must be preparing for 2160-pixel Super HD.
