The combat is the one thing I don't get the criticism for.
I personally found it to be one of the worst combat systems I have ever played and I play a ton of jrpgs.
There just really isn't anything I like about it.
It's to much real time to be able to ignore it and do other things during combat like a pure turn based combat, but at least through the first 20 hours such a basic and boring system that it doesn't hold my interest.
The characters don't feel well fleshed out for combat at all, they each feel like a single final fantasy character pointlessly broken up into 3 parts to force a player to have to switch between them in order to try to make things more interesting but instead just makes it really tedious. (and even then they have far less flexibility then most FF characters. 20 hours in on most other FF games and I would have quite a few more moves to choose from)
Add in a shield that you have to break to do real damage to make the combat even for guys that should be a piece of cake take way to long, sprinkle on a if your leader dies (whom you can't choose through the first 20 hours) then you get game over despite the fact that there are items to revive people and finally add in horrible AI that even if they are long range characters like to hump the big enemies so that the tiny AOE attacks the enemy has hits all of the characters when it should only hit one and you have FF13's combat.
The kicker, I actually was enjoying the world/story through the first 20 hours (it wasn't great but it at least held my interest), the only reason I stopped playing was because I couldn't stand dealing with the combat anymore.
The combat's quite fun once you control three party members. Give it a chance on regular difficulty so you're having fun. You're gonna be spending probably 30-40 hours on it, so you may as well try to enjoy it instead of writing the game off as horrid before even fully utilizing the battle system.
But yeah, was watching some streams and it looks like Easy mode is there.
nah it's just tedious. I know I was missing the information previously, but yeah I didn't write any part of the game off, I tried my best to give the game a chance for 20 hours but I just couldn't take anymore with the combat system. I know at the very least ff13-2 fixes some of my issues with the system, but I haven't tried that one since I wanted to get through ff13 first.
