Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

They mentioned how Raptors were primarily forest creatures rather then the desert plains like creatures they were in FFXI. I guess my main issue is... the new mobs, especially the additional mobs from FFXI, just look transplanted into the world. I would rather have 'less' mobs then more of the same mobs from a different game unless they can give an adequate reason for them being added into the new version of 1.0, it just breaks immersion for me even more so then the previous 1.0 mobs from FFXI.

Here's your explanation for all the weird happening in ARR.

Summarizing: A huge moon-like thing prison was summoned towards the world by some crazy ass maniac seeking to gain more power, that ended up unleashing Bahamut from within his prison, and wrecking havoc on the world and break the balance of the Aether. Due to this you get Lightning to show up on one of her many dimensional jumps, you also get male-miqo'tes when they didn't exist before, and Mamool Jas.

Sounds acceptable to me.

I hope that we get an special PvP event of players with Noctis clothes vs players with Lightning clothes.

Winner side will receive Cloud's costume, loser side will receive Sora's.

So, if you get early access it only runs for one week? That pisses me off. Mainly because I won't get the game through the mail until 5 - 8 days from release. I couldn't afford two day shipping from Amazon, and they used to do that shit for free. Now they want you to sign up for prime. -_- Fucking annoying.

If I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition online, but it said that the game would be delivered on August 27th, how am I going to get early access if the game is sent on release day?
Those who qualify for early access will be able to download the client before the start of official service, allowing you to log in and play before release day.

Not sure if it's level capped or not but it's an open beta with data transferring over to retail.

Okay... cause preordering didn't give me any damn information other than "Hey submit your email". Don't you aleady know my email jackass? I just bought the game with my account. No indication that I "own" the game in my square enix account either.... I'm having flashbacks of playonline.

Seeing the FFXI monsters was exciting at first. It was something I recognised and it made me think of all the great memories I have.

But as I played more and more of the beta I started to feel a bit of concern. Not really just the reappearance of monsters but the whole nostalgia thing in general. FFXIV at times feels like it tries way too hard to hit everything in the long Final Fantasy history and it really breaks immersion.

It's like they think they can't craft a unique enough world on their own and need to lean on nostalgia. But I guess I understand. They really need to appeal to the Final Fantasy fans to get ARR off on a good start.

Having a Cid before was neat. But by the time I was hearing a FF2 boss battle remix for a quest and seeing another Biggs and Wedge I just rolled my eyes a little. It has the feeling of "trying too hard" to me.

Yeah but that code you get for pre-ordering will let you start playing a few days before the 27th, P4/OB is totally unrelated to purchasing the game.

I understand the complains about monsters. But Cid, Biggs and Wedge.. Really?

Those 3 are iconic characters in the Final Fantasy franchise just like Lightning. How is having those 3 characters in the game "trying to hard", that's just a check box on every FF game.

I don't mean to complain. I was just trying to observe. It ultimately makes no difference to me and has no influence on my continued subscription.

But it was just a little too much for my liking. By themselves it wasn't anything but by the time you do those missions I felt like I had been constantly bombarded with, "Hey, remember this?!"

Why specifically do they use the term "materia" and "magitek" and stuff. It's just so much stuff. I guess the other side of it is that it could be better to use terms we are familiar with than entirely new ones. I don't know. It just feels weird. Like the game wants to constantly remind me it's Final Fantasy.

Gonna agree there.

The name Cid pops up in practically every Final Fantasy. I forget which game doesn't have a Cid, one of the really early ones I think.

Biggs and Wedge are names that have appeared in almost every other FF since seven, so re-using those names again is par for the course, practically tradition.

This is a silly complaint to me. There have been and always will be things that appear in every game in this franchise. A game that embraces all of that is not a bad thing. That's like complaining that slimes show up in a new Dragon Quest game.

I agree with this. XIV has a beautiful world and a lot going for it, with a lot of potential for expansion. Having the things familiar to the FF franchise is what makes the game FF, and is common for many if not all of the numbered entries of the series.

And why don't you just look at the game for what it is? What's the problem with using similar names for old stuff when they are not exactly the same? That just helps with people feeling fmailiar with the game. Materia is just another word for matter, and it works no where like in FF7, Magitek is just referencing to the a type of technology based on magic. Are you going to complain about Ifrit as well, or about the Mail-Moogles from being a rip off FF9?

There are other things more deserving to be complained about like Lancers having a Buster Sword show up during their Limit Break, now that's just messed up.

So is it confirmed that Phase 4 will carry all progress over to release?
If it does then what's the point of the early start stuff with pre-orders if the beta is open?

Phase 4 will stop. Then its early access for those with it and then its the launch. Phase 4 isn't lasting all the way until launch.

The point is that you start to play earlier! You don't have to wait until the 27th to do it, and the open beta will only last one week from around the 9th to the 16th, give or take a few days.

I don't know. I guess I'm being weird. Things just started to feel out of place to me. As a long time Final Fantasy fan, I've never felt this way about any of the other games in the series. I didn't even feel this way about version 1. So I don't know.

I really didn't mean for it to be like a complaint or whatever. Just "thinking out loud" I guess. I'm bored and this is the only active thread in my subscriptions.

I apologize if it felt like I was attacking your opinions. I just thought that some things weren't out of place, and the game is indeed focused in fan-service, that's been Yoshida's focus since the beginning.

Although he doesn't want it to go overboard, that's why I was so surprised about the Lightning stuff, but I'm sure that was a decision that came from the top of the company.

They tried the unique world approach with the original version of FF14, no one liked it.

Im just surprised that SE didnt go further with the fanservice for ARR.

I mean, who wants to play as a Pugilist? No one, people want Monks from FF11.

At least update the damn models, I do agree that mandys and goblins have iconic looks already but stuff like Colibries, Birds, Raptors, Crabs, Opo-opos, Peistes, Goobbues, Saplings, Rafflesias, Sandworms, Apkallus, Pugils, Qiqirns, Imps, Soulflayers, etc. they look exactly the same, just seem lazy to me, expecially when they did great stuff to Gnats, Treants, Puks, Ahrimans, Buffalos, Flytraps, etc.

Give us updated look Cardians next please.

Good point, I agree new models would be more ideal.

I think the only mobs that bother me from the FFXI holdovers is the demon and gigas ones.

Hmm.

I don't think the Kindred or Gigas bother me. While the Kindred were big in XI, they didn't have a lot of personality like the Big Three beastmen did. Same with the Gigas.

I do hope, BTW, we see some awesome beastman NPCs in quests and things like that awesome Yagudo in the ToAU storyline.

So, if you already get early access then Phase 4 is like early early access?

Anyway, this is good news. Hope they don't find any super bugs, though I'm worried something might slip through with Arcanist/Summoner/Scholar.

Damn...looking through my screenshots, both my Roeg...Galkas are boss and my Raoh-like Lalafell is boss too. Why so hard to choose? ;_;

Okay, does anyone know if I sign up for the Amazon Prime trial and cancel it right away after getting free two day shipping if I'll still get the free shipping?

Not sure if anyone answered you yet, but... Yes, you can sign up for a trial of Prime and then go to the options and tell it to NOT automatically renew. And it'll work for 30 days. So you might want to wait a bit before doing the trial (if that matters).

I have seen this on an Nvidia card as well. The next area that it is loading will appear a bluish green for a fraction of a second then be normal. It seems like when it is changing to higher detail models as you approach something there is a junk frame of nothingness. I have seen it in wow as well but not other games I have played recently like Bioshock Infinite so I wonder what it is.

Oh, good to know it wasn't just me (and isn't specific to certain card brands). It's only happened on this game for me, though. Hmm. Not sure what it could be.

I'm fine as long i don't have to spend 40 levels killing crabs.

Seriously, fuck them.

haha, tell me about it. It was so painful how almost every single [popular] exp camp in that game in the early days involved killing crabs (sometimes crawlers). xD

Well, we're talking about game-breaking bugs (ie the kind of bugs that can wreck character databases) here. Even in the case they're not properly balanced, I don't think introducing new classes/jobs can 'break' the game.

If the character creation app comes out and has some additional Galka choices that look good, that'll potentially sway me from Hyur. I enjoyed my Galka time in the beta quite a bit and think they look pretty awesome all tank geared out.

Eh, the Gigas in this game seem pretty different compared to XI though.

Did the Gigas in FFXI have weapons and armor on? I can't remember it's been so long. Every time I think about them I think back to the ones in Delkfutt's Tower and how all they wore was some shorts and attacked with their hands.

eYPKwbp.jpg

I snapped that from one of the Thanalan dungeons.

Edit-- I just did a google search, and found Gigas with armor on from FFXI. My memory is shit.

they could've made a better effort with Roegadyn F if they were trying to create a dog-like race

i always think of hades (from gow3) when i see them in xiv though

But now you can spend 50 levels fighting two kinds of crabs!

Awwwww yeahhhh...

Crabs were picked in FFXI because they were pretty harmless. No terrible AoEs, no huge single target TP moves. High defense, but easy to dispel. Anything else was a pain in the ass. Flies? AoE. Spiders? Sickle Slash. Crawlers? Slow. Vultures? Helldive. Goblins? Bombs. Beastmen? Variety of annoying shit. Manticores? Nope. List went on and on.

I don't think they were trying to make a dog like race...? Not sure what you mean here.

I thought they might be from Dynamis, but wasn't sure. If it was from Dynamis, I can see why I didn't remember. That event always made me zone out and almost fall asleep in boredom. :P

Ah worms... They were so easy to solo in the early levels at Maze of Shakhrami. :)

I agree that some of the designs that were more central to FFXI are a little out of place in Eorzea but things like the Treant Saplings which I refer to as 'scenic fodder' are fine by me. At first I was a little iffy about the Mamool Ja but from what I understand is they're refugee's and not all of them are bad. Some of them are in Limsa around the ferry docks and it would seem a large number of them broke bad and went up into the mountains to cause mischief.

I'd like to see some kind of worm variant and the rarabs from XI as more scenic fodder.

Demons? yeah, I'm a bit iffy about them. Puks are a nice find considering I was, and still am not pleased with the sad excuse for the (original) Puk design they used starting back from gamescom years ago:
