what trailer?

My Hands was a song that was made without any relationship with the game. S-E didn't pay Leona to do the music because she already did it. They paid to use her music in the game to market it. It would have been like using My Heart Will Go On in Final Fantasy IX's ending because Titanic was popular. The song wasn't written for the game, it was cherry-picked to market the game. The reason people were upset with this is because Final Fantasy is known for having its own memorable themes that shape the story, themes, and characters.

Oh so it wasn't a song made specifically for FFXIII, but one of her songs from album and SE used it for FFXIII?

Yep. My Hands and Final Fantasy XIII have absolutely no relationship whatsoever outside of Square-Enix paying to have the song play at the end of the game because I guess they thought that teenage girls would buy up the game. Coleman, likewise, is there for marketing reasons instead of them giving one shit about universe coherence.

XIII's western marketing was atrocious thinking back to it. Not only the My Hands thing but the NBA tie-up and Maxim launch party... Then comparing it to Call of Duty? Oh dear.

Is XV trying to appeal to camping fans? Lol.

The only thing I'm actually taking away from this discussion is that the demo is going to be 11/10 material if the only thing we can argue about is Coleman camping equipment being featured. :D
HYPE!

Didn't you hear about the new bundle? "People who bought Final Fantasy XV also bought: ROAD TRIP (unrated)"
:P

As games cost more and more and as they need to reach wider audiences, you'll see more of this. Problem with My Hands was that, besides not being a good song IMO, it was so blatantly obvious what they were trying to do and I think SE vastly overestimated Leona Lewis' pull with the target market that was going to actually buy 13 (going by the reaction it got). And that video of her playing the game like she gave a shit was cringe worthy and poorly thought out.

Personally, I don't have an issue with Coleman's. It's far less invasive than My Hands ever was.

Ok now I understand about the Leona Lewis thing. I actually heard the song for the first time in youtube...

Yeah. I mean, the lyrical theme songs that have appeared in Final Fantasy games since VIII took the plunge are mostly corny, but at least they were written for the games, and I do think that the melodies are generally memorable. I actually liked the FFXII song, if cheesy. I don't mind shitty songs being in these games as long as they're thematically relevant.

Ok I thought Coleman thing was usual movie product placement thing. So I guess it's the other way around from what I am hearing?

It is the usual movie product placement thing.

It's not a big deal, but it's definitely something that can make people feel "eh, doesn't feel right", especially for a game that takes place in a fictional world.

FFXV's marketing campaign confirmed:

I like lyrical theme songs in FF. FFVIII was one of my favorite, and I like FFVIII, IX ones as well.

I would cop. No lie. They should release a murdered out version with reflective tape. Oh lawd!
Edit: actually navy is a better color than black at night.

Word.

I would take 1000 Words a thousand times over My Hands.

This doesn't make any sense. "This name exists in my world while I'm alive so this just breaks all immersion for me. This can't possibly exist anywhere, but here."

I missed this post, so I'll touch on it. No, I don't believe it could exist in FFXV's world because FFXV's world is not our world, from which Coleman originates-- and by Coleman, I don't mean the name, I mean the brand. It's not about the name Coleman, it's about the brand, the logo... asking us to believe that this real life company exists in a completely fictional universe. If they had created an original brand with some level of likeness to Coleman, that would have been one thing, but to deliberately place the company brand in the game as-is is saying "this thing from real world earth is also in this Final Fantasy universe." It rings false to me, and yes, I think it breaks the immersion a little.

If you want to believe that Coleman from our real world could exist in FFXV's not real universe that's your prerogative and I don't really care, but to call people out for finding it more than a little dumb (because it is) is trying to tell people that they can't have a very valid opinion.

Yeah, that's the thing. You see product placements in something like Transformers and it's just alien robots visiting modern day earth. It's still stupid, but it doesn't exactly stand out as odd. But when you put modern day camping gear and logos in a fantasy world, it's really awkward.

I mean, there are lots of potentials for product placements in this game from recent showing. And I don't think Coleman will be the last product placement we will see in the game.

At least XIII-2's song was just translated than completely changed.

That, and Coleman can't exist in FFXV's world because that would mean the same exact people with the same exact vision and foundation. And company name. And logo. There just happens to be a company in FFXV's world with the same name and logo that sell the same type of products. Like you said, it's extremely awkward. I don't buy it, hence the breaking of immersion.

Well this particular image is what they should be doing: creating their own fictional brands.

Er... they only kept the same musical part. The lyrics were different.

Oh? Close enough I guess.

Still My Hands was like the worst. It's not a bad song but what does it have to do with Lightning?

Well, SE wants those money I guess....

Then they should focus on creating a good game that will sell itself and then make said money. Not only that, they're currently getting a load of money off FFXIV which should be more than enough to help fund what is needed left for XV.

Yea I am not trying to defend what they are doing...

Oh, this is all news to me.
Archaean, huh? I like that a lot better than Eidolon. Though I think Duscae's astral shard is Shiva, what with the ice. Titan is supposedly linked to that newly revealed city.

I if the summons are called
Archaeans
this time around, I can dig it. After hearing Esper and Eidolons being used after their respected established games(FFVI and FFIX), it's nice to actually use "new" terms for them in NEW games. I mean, we've had
"Summons" as default(used in FFIII, FFIV, FFV and FFVII), which is fine for a default, but we've also had Espers(FFVI), Guardian Force(FFVIII), Aeons(FFX), Avatars(FFXI) and Primals(FFXIV), just buck up and look for something new in this tradition, don't go back to the whole Esper/Eidolon thing. It's not hard, considering you could just Google search shit, go snooping on Encyclopedia Mythica or such for some word appropriate of a term.

I hope anime is a thing inside the game world of FFXV and Naruto has been airing and the royal house is actually in the middle of a huge legal battle with the creators of Naruto for using the image and likeness of the crown prince for Sasuke without royalties.\

get it? royalty not getting royalties?

It's a fantasy based on reality though.

Inspired designs are fine. With the exception of some folks who seem legitshook that FF can have things like gas stations and cars, ( since they obviously never played VIII), by and large, the abundance of real-life-like things in FFXV isn't really an issue.

But just like how Noctis's car model doesn't exist in real-life, and how even the Roen designed clothing of Noctis isn't attributed to a 'Roen brand existing in the XV universe', but rather just a brand lending their fashion design onto the game... those kind of stuff are a much more subtle and immersive than "ok, Coleman camping stuff."

I personally don't mind about the coleman thing too much. I guess I would preferred it if it wasn't there, but it doesnt bother me that much.

I mean, if something was going to have a fictional blue logo instead of a real red one...

That being said, I do understand why some of you guys are against it

The problem with Coleman here more than anything is that it's direct rip from real world designs to the game. It smells like product placement, and it's literal product placement because those exist in the real world.

The difference with Roen is that those clothes were uniquely designed for the cast in this game. I think it added to the game.

For that reason, I totally understand that some people are upset regarding this. I guess to me it doesn't matter as much because I'm always open to any possibility to any fictional world, and also because I probably didn't know what 'Coleman' was before. To me it neither adds nor does it take away from the game; it's just a thing that's part of the game's world now no matter how you look at it.
